The delightful tram date from the 1930s. Trams are housed in a museum. In Lisbon trams are an integral part of the public transports. These historic trams are still in use, as the 28 line is completely unsuitable for modern trams due to its numerous tight turns and steep gradients. But there it is!

Google celebrated on the 31 August 2011, the 110th anniversary of the first Portuguese tramway line, between Cais do Sodré and Algés, in Lisbon, Portugal, with a colorful Doodle.

How nice! The word Google enters letter by letter in the Portuguese tramway! It could be an interesting digital resource to include into school curricula: new countries, other cultures and different languages. An old but always 'fancy' transport in some big cities.

So, let's start with some tips on cultural traditions as a brief introduction to learn about different cities in the world. In this case, Lisbon, Portugal.

• The tramway

The tramway is an urban transport from the 19th century. And it's still working in some European countries, and other different continents: United States, South America, Australia or New Zealand.

In Porto, Portugal, there is the Tramway Museum! The Tramway Museum of Porto is open to tourists and to schools.

• Activities:

- General information: Ask your students to make some research about trams in Portugal.

They can use their smartphones, or tablets if you are teaching in a 'lucky' class.

- Culture: After the first information, teachers will ask the students to continue the research activity but now to find countries that are using the tramway as an usual public transport in our days and in which cities.

After a good individual research about cities that are using trams as a public transport, invite students to join in different groups.

Each group will choose a different city and will develop a project. For example, exploring a touristic tour.

Note: The fair way to distribute cities' names among students is the raffle.

Each group will prepare a little video on YouTube, using school account to present different cities to the classroom. Established a time presentation, 3-5 minutes, and time to finish the activity, 3-4 days. Take a week at least for younger students.

Discussion:

Each group of students learned about a city in the world that is using trams. So, they will share their urban cultural knowledge with their classmates.

Teachers and students are asked to make some questions about each city: history, geography, language, culture, traditions.

• The Tramway Museum:

In Porto, there is an interesting Museum. The Tramway Museum! The Tramway Museum of Porto is open to tourists and to schools.

The Museum has an impressive collection of antique trams. The museum is well prepared to do different activities with students (different class levels). 

Any group, teacher and his class can rent an old tram to do a touristic tour.

Back to the 28 line in Lisbon, teachers and students can get some useful information on Google Maps to know the circuit of the 28 line.

Finally, invite your students to watch the videos on this post about the most famous tram line in Lisbon. Tram 28! They will love to take a tour... like a roller coaster! Wow! Amazing!

A bit of History?

Rewind Cities Lisbon takes your students on a journey into the past and takes them to Rua de S. Bento where in 1758 was built the S. Bento Arch. 

In 1938, during the redevelopment of the surrounding area of the Palace of the King’s Courts, currently the Parliament, it was dismantled and its stones numbered, remaining so for 60 years, first in the gardens of the Ajuda Palace, then in Praça de Espanha, where it was finally rebuilt in 1998.

All augmented reality AR experiences require that you guide your students to its specific point of interest. 

Just ask your students to place themselves exactly on the marker, and when it turns pink activate the experience.

Some thoughts:

This app was not created for students. But I think it's a great educational resource to include into History lessons, Arts and Culture and Techonology/AR.

Perfect for the expert historians, teachers, local or not schools, to study History of Portugal and  World Heritage Sites.

Your students, Portuguese or not, will learn in a funny and modern way about the history of Lisbon, Portugal.

Roger Waters began his European tournée "The Wall" on March 21 (International Day of Poetry), with a fantastic concert, in Lisbon. You can  admire some photos on Blitz (Portuguese magazine of Music).

Rolling Stones, U2 are fantastic in their performances but only Pink Floyd and Roger Waters are able to mix images, scenarios, lights, music and technology with such harmony, even such poetry!

And Roger Waters did more! Much more! He asked for the presence of a project of social inclusion for kids to be with him on stage.

Sixteen ethnic kids from "Associação Moinho da Juventude da Cova da Moura" (near Lisbon) were on stage in a special participation with Roger Waters and his fourteen musicians.

Whassysa, social assistant, 27 years old, that motivated those kids to participate in such an important concert, told media that the choral group has only a month and kids and teenagers (8-16 years old) were very excited about their participation in the concert.

Kids (boys and girls) were so motivated - said Whassysa - that they were not missing a single day in the rehearsal, during two weeks. 


They did not know the lyrics, even less English language. And they learned the lyrics in English.

Kids engaged very seriously in the project, they made some research about Roger Waters and Pink Floyd. It was the first time that they heard about The Wall, Roger Waters or Pink Floyd.


And March 21-22, 2011 when the classical theme ‘Another Brick in the Wall - Part 1’ began, kids  appeared on stage singing. Watch the video below:

What an audacious project to change the future of Cova da Moura young people. Roger Waters welcomed them on the stage! 


It was very kind of him to invite a choral group of vulnerable young kids to participate in the concert.

We all know the importance of Music as social inclusion for kids. There are fantastic projects all over the world! And Cova da Moura project is one of them! 

Music has the potencial to achieve social transformation of vulnerable kids.


The success of this participation and the work of the cultural assistant aim the long-term  – including hopes that children will be driven towards higher educational achievement and, ultimately, out of poverty – are impossible to evaluate at the moment! But it had an overwhelmingly positive effect on the children involved, for sure. 


The holistic immersive approach of music (rock, pop, classical) and the engagement of important and experencied musicians is central to achieving significant transformation, particularly to the lives of the most vulnerable children.

Realiza-se em Lisboa, no Instituto Superior Técnico, dias 15-17 Setembro, o ciclo de Conferências de Ciências e Artes dos Videojogos.

"Videojogos2010 - Conferência de Ciências e Artes dos Videojogos" é um evento organizado pelo Instituto Superior Técnico da Universidade Técnica de Lisboa, pelo Instituto de Engenharia de Sistemas e Computadores Investigação e Desenvolvimento e pela Sociedade Portuguesa de Ciências dos Videojogos.

Durante três dias, o campus do IST no TagusPark será palco de conferências, palestras e workshops dedicados às diversas áreas do conhecimento relacionadas com videojogos, juntando cerca de 100 especialistas académicos e empresariais.

Pelo que pude ler e pesquisar nos diversos menus, este evento promete ser muito enriquecedor e de grande partilha de conhecimento e de experiências.

Pela minha parte ser-me-á impossível participar, dado ter participado na semana anterior em outro ciclo de conferências e workshops "Innovation Forum 2010" que teve lugar em Oeiras. 

As deslocações alargadas não são assim tão fáceis, pelo menos no que me concerne.

Espero poder aceder a algumas conclusões. 

Seria interessante também se a organização tivesse agendado uma participação online ou  Live Stream (oficial conference streaming and interacting site).

The 2nd Conference VideoGames2010 will take place in Lisbon, in collaboration with the Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) of the Universidade Técnica de Lisboa, Instituto de Engenharia de Sistemas e Computadores Investigação e Desenvolvimento and Sociedade Portuguesa de Ciências dos Videojogos.

The event will start on September 15th until September 17th. There are conferences and workshops.

The conference takes place in the campus of IST Instituto Superior Técnico, situated in the TagusPark.
