Schools ! A partial Lunar Eclipse ? Starwatchers look at the sky !

After the total solar eclipse  last 12 August and the Perseid meteor shower, 13 August 2026 here we are again looking at the sky !


The early hours of Friday 28 August will reward very early risers in the UK, Europe and Africa with a fine lunar eclipse. Though not quite a total eclipse, it will transform the moon into a dramatic sight as dawn approaches.


This eclipse is a member of Saros 138. The eclipses in a given saros series are separated by 18 years, 11 days, 8 hours. The previous eclipse in this saros series occurred on August 16, 2008, and the next takes place on September 7, 2044.

🌒Which countries will watch ?


At the moment of greatest eclipse, 4:13 a.m. Universal Time, 96.3% of the Moon's disk is within Earth's umbra, the central part of the shadow where the Sun is completely blocked by Earth. This part of the eclipse is visible in the Americas (except Alaska and northwestern Canada), western Europe and western Africa.

The penumbra is the part of Earth's shadow where the Sun is only partially covered by Earth. The effect of the penumbra on the Moon's appearance is subtle. But after the partial phase begins, at 2:34 UTC (10:34 p.m. Eastern on the night of the 27th), the umbra's dramatic effect is easily visible as it takes an increasingly large bite out of the disk of the full Moon. 


Less than an hour later, the part of the Moon still in sunlight will be small enough for observers' eyes to adapt to darkness and perceive the coppery color of the part of the Moon within the umbra. The visualizations here mimic this dark adaptation by increasing the apparent photographic exposure around the time of greatest eclipse.


"Obscuration is more intuitive — it's always between 0 and 1 — and it more closely matches the visual experience. You can say without qualification that "96.3% of the Moon's disk" will be within the umbra."

💬Where to watch ?


"A world map showing where the eclipse is visible at different phases. Contours mark the boundary around the part of Earth where each phase is visible. The start of the partial phase, for example, is visible everywhere within the orange contour. The map is centered on 63°8'W, the sublunar point at greatest eclipse (the longitude where the Moon is highest in the sky). The eclipse can't be seen in the gray areas outside the contours."

As the eclipse unfolds, the moon will be sinking, so find an observation site with an uninterrupted view towards the western horizon, and enjoy the view as the eclipse slips from view while the dawn gathers behind you in the east.


Unlike a solar eclipse, a lunar eclipse is completely safe to watch with the naked eye. Binoculars will even reveal subtle shades of colour across the moon’s surface.


Observers across much of the Americas will be able to enjoy the eclipse from beginning to end from late night on Thursday 27 August, while those in New Zealand will catch little more than its closing moments much later on Friday.

Education:

Summer vacation is drawing to a close. Some kids are already staring down homework and alarm clocks, but others are still enjoying summer camp and late bedtimes.


In European countries most part of schools are closed, as well in North America, Australia, and most countries in the world. I could not be informed about African countries.


However, teachers are in touch with students via Instagram or X/Twitter school accounts, or even on learning blogs or educational websites (schools or personal).


So, teachers can invite their students to join astronomers on NASA Television or skywatchers at national observatories of Astronomy, observing the lunar eclipse tomorrow nigh the 27 August and 28 August too.


Skygazers in America will be able to catch the rare celestial show as Earth's shadow falls across the Moon.


Oh, my ! Ask students to make some photos or videos with their smartphones to explore in Science classroom next September.


Teachers and students can debate their experiences on school time.


Don't forget ! Invite your students to get great images of a partial unar eclipse. They can share them on NASA's Lunar Eclipse Flickr group.

Today marks National Pi Day in the United States and around the world. The holiday commemorates a timeless symbol beloved by many in mathematical and scientific communities, while making the most of the opportunities it allows for humorous wordplay, dessert and "teachable moments," as some experts have said.

The date today resembles 3.14159, the common approximation of the mathematical constant Pi, orπ.

The Doodle Pi Day 2026 celebrates the numerical constant pi (π), highlighting the foundational geometry used to calculate its limits in ancient times. Long before modern technology, the Greek mathematician Archimedes popularized an innovative approach: he approximated the value of pi by sandwiching a circle between two 96-sided polygons to determine its precise upper and lower bounds. Today, we honor this mathematical legacy as enthusiasts worldwide celebrate with pi-reciting contests and slices of pie.


Pi Day is celebrated annually on March 14, since the date written numerically corresponds with the first three digits of π . (Pi Day was particularly momentous in 2015, when the numerical date corresponded with  up to five digits: 3.1415.) It is also coincidentally the birthday of Albert Einstein.

Dividing any circle’s circumference by its diameter gives you an answer of pi, which is usually rounded to 3.14. Because pi is an irrational number, its decimal representation goes on forever and never repeats. 






In 2022, mathematician Simon Plouffe discovered the formula to calculate any single digit of pi. In the same year, teams around the world used cloud computing technology to calculate pi to 100 trillion digits. But you might be surprised to learn that for space exploration, NASA uses far fewer digits of pi.

  • What is pi?

Pi is a special number — so special, in fact, that most laypeople are probably aware of it, even if only as a relic of bygone classroom lectures or geometry textbooks. Represented in abbreviated form by the somewhat familiar sequence 3.14, pi, or the Greek letter π, is an iconic symbol seen in mathematical equations and, in more recent decades, merchandise like T-shirts, sweatshirts and coffee mugs.

The symbol for Pi was first introduced by a Welsh mathematician called William Jones in 1706.

Anglesey-born William Jones as i told before was the first person to use the Greek letter  for the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter. But who was this little-known figure?

William Jones a Welsh mathematician whose pioneering work left a mark on the world of mathematics and introduced a symbol that has become synonymous with the field, π, died on this day in 1749.

He would go on to make significant contributions to mathematics, particularly in the realm of trigonometry.

He introduced the use of π (pi) as a symbol for the mathematical constant representing the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter. Yet, it hurts my head, too.

Jones' use of π as the symbol for pi was adopted by Swiss mathematician Leonhard Euler in the 18th century. It has since become universally recognised and is essential in various mathematical and scientific disciplines.


It is thought that he chose π either because it is first letter of the word for periphery (περιφέρεια) or because it is the first letter of the word for perimeter (περίμετρος). (Or because of both).

On the back of his experience, he published his first book in 1702 on the mathematics of navigation as a practical guide for sailing. On his return to Britain he began to teach mathematics in London, possibly starting by holding classes in coffee shops for a small fee. Shortly afterwards he published Synopsis palmariorum matheseos, a book written in English, despite the Latin title.


Jones' work laid the foundation for a deeper understanding of trigonometry and the principles that underpin it. His contributions revolutionised mathematical notation and paved the way for countless mathematical discoveries.

"Understanding Pi is essential if you want to make calculations for circles, cylinders, spheres, and anything circular, even an ellipse. Pi is the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. It doesn't matter how big or small the circle is - the ratio stays the same. Properties like this that stay the same when you change other attributes are called constants."

  • Why is pi important ?


The ratio is beloved by math and science enthusiasts for a reason: Pi serves critical functions in many of the most basic and the most complex equations. It's necessary to calculate the area and the volume of everything circular and spherical, and it allows humans to measure the sizes of tiny things, like molecules, in a similar way it allows them to estimate the sizes of massive things, like Earth, the moon, other planets and the sun. Pi helps NASA engineers build spacecraft just as it helps scientists study newly discovered worlds. It's also fundamentally related to gravity.


Manil Suri, a mathematics and statistics professor at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, said pi helps people understand more about the world, the universe and how they work.

  • How to celebrate Pi Day : Some thematic activities


  • Eating pie, baking pie and perhaps observing the mathematical principles of pi using a pie are some thematic activities to enjoy. Pizza pies and dessert pies are both appropriate variations. 


  • A play on traditional "pie contests," pi contests are common on Pi Day and often involve competitions to recite as many digits of π as possible from memory.


  • But there are no right or wrong ways to celebrate Pi Day. For people around the world excited by the mathematical significance of pi and the broad potential for honorary puns related to it, there are plenty of ways to pay homage. 


The same goes for educators and students, although math and science experts do generally recommend using Pi Day festivities as opportunities to make learning more fun.

International Day Against Violence & Bullying at School including Cyberbullying : Screen smart !

On 6 November, the world marked the International Day against Violence and Bullying at School, including Cyberbullying. This day is celebrated on the first Thursday of November every year.


UNESCO Member States declared the first Thursday of November as the International Day against Violence and Bullying at School, Including Cyberbullying, recognizing that school-related violence in all its forms is an infringement of children’s and adolescents’ rights to education and their health and well-being.


  • Theme 2025 :

“Screen smart: Learning to be safe in the digital era.”


Every month, 1 in 3 learners experiences bullying and at least 1 in 10 faces cyberbullying. Children who are bullied are twice as likely to feel lonely or have trouble sleeping. Some even have thoughts of suicide. 


Online abuse creates a 24/7 loop of fear that follows learners from screens into classrooms. The risks are even greater for some learners: 58 % of girls and young women have faced online harassment, about 50 % more likely to be cyberbullied than their peers.





Across Europe, more than 20% of 15-year-old students reported being frequently bullied, affecting students and schools irrespective of their socio-economic profile.


A joint effort is crucial when it comes to addressing violence at school emphasising prevention, support, and community. Building educators’ capacity to prevent it, and implementing a whole-school approach are essential.

Bullying in schools has negative impacts on the wellbeing and mental health of learners, their school’s climate and their educational outcomes. It increases the risk of early school drop-out, with long lasting effects on the quality of life.


Online violence is not just a digital safety issue, it strikes at the very heart of education, undermining learners' health, well-being and participation, threatening their future and that of societies.

Education must be our frontline defence. UNESCO works with governments, schools and teachers to foster safe learning environments free from violence, train educators to recognize and respond to online violence, and strengthen policies so that learning spaces — physical and digital — are safe and healthy for all.

Yet according to 2024 Global Education Monitoring Youth Report, only 16% of countries have adopted legislation to prevent cyberbullying through education.

On this International Day against violence and bullying at school, including cyberbullying, the schools are encouraged to conduct activities to enhance awareness on prevention of violence and bullying in Schools, and work together to make our schools and educational institutions more safe and vibrant for all learners. 


  • Here are five ways we teach the young child the power of inclusivity.


Explain to your young learner what bullying is. Use actual examples from their life. Point out when people say and do things that are mean, and give them practical examples of what they can do to stand up for their peers who are left out or bullied.


Everyone has feelings and needs, just like you. Colour blindness has never solved discrimination. Acknowledge the differences of appearance, nationality and skin colour that your child notices in others. And at the same time talk to them about our shared humanity and that everyone wants to be loved and happy, just like them.


Encourage collaborative learning. As young children develop a sense of agency, they discover that they have the power to invite others into their circle and experience the joy of collaboration. Inclusivity requires an opening of the heart and an act of generosity but the returns are enormous: an exchange of ideas, fresh perspectives and shared energy as young children work together to find a creative solution for a problem or project. Collaborative learning – when facilitated skillfully – enhances academic progress. Inclusivity helps the young child to develop flexibility and openness to new experiences and this in turn promotes their creativity.

Teach “you can’t say you can’t play” One of the most heart-felt descriptions of the young child’s journey into a shared world is found in Vivien Paley’s award-winning monograph You Can’t Say You Can’t Play


Published in 1993, the book is a reflection upon the forces of social inclusion and exclusion that operate throughout preschool and in the early years of primary education. It was in an attempt to create a classroom grounded in inclusivity that Vivian Paley introduced her kindergarteners to a new rule: 

“You can’t say you can’t play.” Hers was a bold attempt to foster a habit of inclusivity in her young students.


Kindness is even more important online. The Internet is another shared world, infinitely vaster than the classroom, and it exposes the young child to people and diversity that they would never encounter IRL. Of everything we teach young children, kindness and inclusivity have the greatest potential to head off the growth of online bullying and hate in the tween and teen years.


"Education is a frontline defense – safe classrooms must extend to safe screens. And learning to be safe online or ‘screen smart’ is essential to safeguarding the quality education children and young people deserve."


Our role into our school curricula since the first lessons including media is to teach curricula but at the same time teach students always to be safe at school life and to be smart on screen.

We have in our hands an entire 'wired' generation. Children and young people who are all day connected on their cellphones and tablets. At school, at home, in a bus or just walking, even between friends or just strangers.
