On the 9th of Ma, many Europeans joined in celebrating Europe Day. It marks the anniversary of the historic Schuman Declaration in 1950, in which he laid out his idea for a new form of political cooperation in Europe. 

As in previous years, the European Cultural Foundation hosts a celebration and offers a central hub for information about Europe Day celebrations that will be held from 5 – 12 May 2024 across Europe.

We are all citizens of Europe, regardless of our cultural backgrounds, orientations or convictions. Europe is where we share our lives, build experiences and imagine our futures. 

Through cultural events, public debates, and exhibitions, Europeans learn about the history and shared values across Europe and can converse about its future.

Democracy is a precious gift passed on to us from previous generations. They aspired towards it and fought for it. We should never take democracy for granted. It is up to us to maintain it, to make it stronger and pass it on to the generations to come.

If you live  and teach in a Secondary school,  in a European country from the European Union, it's important to talk about the importance of young people voting at European elections, because your students are European citizens who can vote very soon. Perhaps one or two of your students are already 18 years-old.

Young people, despite representing a significant part of the population, often does not feel the need to actively participate in the democratic process, especially when it comes to the European elections. 

It is arguable that this kind of apathy is fueled by the lack of adequate civics education in schools. Without a solid understanding of the role of the European Union in everyday life and the consequences of decisions taken at European level, young people can easily feel alienated and disinterested in the electoral process.

This is your role as a teacher. Civics Education into your school curricula is very important!

Resources & Activities : Why vote is important 

• Invite your students to watch the video here. Talk about European history before Schumann Declaration 1950, while listening to the testimonies of the elders. After that, listen the students about the messages they passed on to their grandchildren.

• Ask the students to enter on the page above and explore with them all the items by reading and discussing each item if the students have doubts.

• Prepare yourself without demonstrate your voting inclination - a teacher must be neutral and exempt - don't forget!

• You are in the class to talk about  why citizens must voting, when they will have the age to do it, and the importance of voting. Not to tell them who to vote for. 

• You must not let them know which it is you political idea.

Today May 9 is Europe Day !  It's an occasion to celebrate peace and unity in Europe.

Each year, the EU institutions in Brussels open their doors to the public for celebrations and activities, while EU Delegations around the world organise events throughout the whole month of May. 

Due to the Coronavirus crisis, there will be no open doors events in Brussels or in the Delegations to celebrate Europe Day this year. The ongoing crisis leaves no room for social gatherings, and our thoughts go out to all those who are fighting against the virus or suffering because of it.

However, we will still be marking this day, especially since this year we commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Schuman Declaration - a powerful statement made by the French foreign minister Robert Schuman who initiated the process of European integration on 9 May 1950.

When a long-planned exhibition celebrating the 70th Anniversary of the Schuman Declaration could no longer take place in European cities, the European Parliament Archives worked with Europeana to bring the exhibition to life online – in 24 languages. 

This is an opportunity for citizens to learn about the day-to-day work of the institutions, as well as the broader issues, challenges and benefits of the European Union for its 508 million citizens.

For many European students it's not well known, but since 1985, Europe has its own day Europe Dayt to celebrate the specific character of Europe. The unique European mix of numerous different languages, countries, regions, food, music; all in a rather small geographical location; that constitutes Europe.

This Europe Day is like no other. Across Europe and around the world we are stuck in confinement, isolated behind closed borders, in homes behind closed doors. And yet in this we are together like never before.

Today, 11 February 2020, we celebrate Safer Internet Day (SID) when, once again, we'll join forces across the globe to work "Together for a better internet".

And here I am! Pink October is my awareness month. In memory of my mother.

Let me introduce this subject. Seeing pink? October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

So here I am writing some words and share some resources on Going Pink in School Education.

Talking about cancer helps students and teachers to be conscious and to understand and follow friends and family.

But let remind you the leading cause of death for children under the age of 15.

In developing countries, over 100,000 children die each year due to poor diagnoses and lack of access to basic treatment options. If given the generic drugs and simple medical procedures so desperately needed it is estimated that more than half of them could be saved. Instead, survival rates stand at 20 percent.

Unfortunately, as teachers, we know some children and teens who have or had cancer or often coexisted with the desease from a mother, a sister, a grandmother or a friend suffering cancer.

Schools must holding special programmes to tell students about how survival rates increases through early detection.

I think it would be important to include cancer awareness into school curriculum, not only in sciences curriculum.

I know several schools that involve young students to raise awareness about this disease.

It's unsweetened depiction of cancer. In fact the film is probably the most honest depiction of the disease I can remember seeing in a movie. Superbly understated and fabulously real.

• Walk Pink

Host a pink walkathon at the Park of your city. Invite other schools to join you:

• Wear Pink

To aid efforts, in Arts curriculum students can designed T-shirts for the cause, ribbons, badges and wear Pink one day or two of the month. Take a picture wearing Pink item every day

• Do Pink ribbon

Students are asked to do pink ribbons and wear them to show their solidarity in school, on the street, at home;

• Sport for Pink

Create sport activities for boys and girls in school gymnasium or playground. Four younger, think in a score;

• Protect your Mom/Grandmother

Students will be titled PYM brand ambassadors who will educate their mothers, grandmothers, and other family to take self exams;

• Pink Bazaar

Set up a charity bazaar in the school for a week and ask for parents and grandparents help;

• Collect scarves

Teachers and parents will be collecting scarves to be sent to patients who have lost their hair due to chemotherapy. 

The scarves will be sent to Breast Cancer organization in your own city or country that will forward it to girls and women patients.

• Write Pink 

Ask students to write kind pink cards or pink letters to send to young Cancer patients;

• Pink Facebook | Twitter | Instagram

On the school social media accounts exchange messages or talks with children and teens who are in hospitals but stay active interacting with social media;
