May in Review & L'heure d'hiver au Canada arrive ! Resources

Google Images Archive

International Day of Peace ! Resources & Activities

Education:

Three important themes to include into your school curricula : Time in different countries, Arts and Peace.

Time ! Sometimes, students don't have any idea about the difference of hours in other countries outside their own country.

In Europe is easier for European students because we have the European Union. But in other countries that don't belong to the EU or countires in different continents...

So don't forget to include this theme into your curricula. it will be important if you make school changes programms or pen friends programms between your students and student from other countries.

Cindy Sherman at Serralves Museum

ArtsI do remember a long time ago, I included museums visits into my curricula at school and students loved very much.

They began to see art in a different way. And the way they transmitted how they looked the objects they were admiring astonished the guide who was conducting the visit in classical way. So he began to talk to the students, asking them what they were seeing in their own interpretation.

Peace! Talk about the urgent need for understanding, non-violence. Challenge discriminatory language in your school with your students.

Peace is not only a noble vision for humanity, it is a call to action. Each of us can heal divisions and embrace peace and understanding. We can call on our families and schools to do the same.

Speak up, learn, practice respect, embrace diversity, protest injustice. Be the change you want to see! Begin in school !

Peace and Arts together, embark on a journey to understand and learn in a new regard about modern ways to transform the way people must fight for a better world.

My usual readers know that I write in French as well. Blogging is my free contribution to inspire new and young teachers, with some activities no matter the subject, when I have the time between work.

Hope you enjoyed my pedagogical proposals published in this publication and included them into your lessons.

Please, help your students to make this world a better place to live !

I hope that you are having a great weekend !

March in Review & World Day Against Child Labour !

World Day Against Child Labour

World Day Against Child Labour is observed annually on June 12. Its purpose is to energize the growing global effort to eliminate child labour.

This year's World Day will focus on celebrating the 25th anniversary of the adoption of the Worst Forms of Child Labour Convention (1999, No. 182).

Although significant strides have been taken in reducing child labour over time, recent years have seen global trends reverse, underscoring the pressing need to unite efforts in expediting actions to eradicate child labour in all its manifestations.

With the adoption of Sustainable Development Goal Target 8.7, the international community made a commitment to the elimination of child labour in all its forms by 2025

  • Theme 2024

Let's act on our commitments: End Child Labour !

  • Did you know?

While much progress has been made in reducing child labour over the years, recent years have seen global trends reverse, and, now more than ever it is important to join forces to accelerate action towards ending child labour in all its forms.

The Africa and the Asia and the Pacific regions together account for almost nine out of every ten children in child labour worldwide.

Education:

Children should grow up in environments that promote their health and development. They should not be compelled to engage in manual labour for survival, as this exposes them to physical and emotional harm. Unfortunately, child labour and abuse remain widespread in many impoverished nations.

Teachers have a crucial role on the alert of poverty or child labour and abuse among their students.

Numerous resources can be included into school curricula to inform, inspire and motivate students of all ages, from primary school to high-school, to get involved on a subject so terrible: child labour and child abuse.

Resources:

As part of the Supporting Children's Rights through Education, the Arts and the Media (SCREAM) Program implemented by the ILO to combat child labour, students from British Culture College who are conducting awareness-raising activities composed a song and recorded it in the studio.

 Activities:

You will find an interesting number of Activities on my publication in 2018 to develop with your students inviting them to support the worldwide movement against child labour.

Schools ! Let's talk about Music ! Peter and the Wolf by Sergey Prokofiev !

Oh! What a special day! October 1 is International Music Day!

As my usual readers know, I love music, I have a master degree in Music/Piano. I have been a piano teacher for years. It would be impossible not to write about Music Day

"Music was my refuge. I could crawl into the space between the notes and curl my back to loneliness."

Maya Angelou

International Music Day is celebrated on 1 October each year. The day was established in 1975 by the International Music Council (IMC), which was founded by UNESCO in 1949.

Music is essential to many of our lives and is a powerful platform that brings people together across cultures.

  • There are 5 Music rights:

Well, this year to celebrate Music Day, I chose to propose to my usual readers a marvelous symphonic fairy tale for children, Peter and the Wolfa musical composition written by Sergei Prokofiev in 1936.

The narrator tells a children's story, while the orchestra illustrates it by using different instruments to play a "theme" that represents each character in the story. It is Prokofiev's most frequently performed work and one of the most frequently performed works in the entire classical repertoire. Each character in the story is represented by a Leitmotif played on a unique instrument.

To celebrate Music Day, here Peter and the Wolf by Sergei Prokofiev. Do you know this charming composition?

Let's start with the animation film by Suzie Templeton. The film won the Academy Award for the Best Animated Short Film at the 80th Academy Awards in 2008.

The film based on the story of Peter and the Wolf as set to the music Sergei Prokofiev in 1936. Unlike the usual version of Prokofiev's work, the film has no narrator but relies on music and images to tell the story.

This inviting picture book introduces a new generation of youngsters to the exciting story of the hungry wolf, the ill-fated duck, the fortunate cat, the fearless little bird, and the brave and cunning Peter, who helps save his friends from the wolf's jaws-and the wolf from the hunters' guns.

A new recording of Prokofiev's music was made to accompany the cinema and television release. The recording was made by the Philharmonia Orchestra and conducted by Mark Stephenson.

Sergei Prokofiev's brilliant compositions are numerous and varied, but Peter and the Wolf is definitely the most evocative and delightful. I listened so many adaptations of this famous work, including editions read by Sting on Spotify, David Bowie, and Basil Rathbone. And I love to watch Peter and the Wolfthe 2008 Oscar-winning stop-motion animated film, which inspired me as well.

Education:

At the request of the Central Children’s Theatre in Moscow, Prokofiev wrote Peter and the Wolf as a musical symphony for children to cultivate children’s musical tastes from a young age. Many U.S. children still encounter this timeless tale in elementary school.

The story tells the tale of Peter, a young boy, his grandfather and a bunch of animals. Each character in the story is also represented by a specific musical instrument. Peter gets an upbeat violin melody; his grandfather a bumbling bassoon.

Each of the various animals also get their own instruments: a flute for the bird, oboe for the duck, clarinet for the cat, French horns for the wolf and various woodwinds and drums for the hunters who save the day.

Children learn to distinguish the sounds of the instruments during the performance of this tale.

Many studies have emerged in recent years describing the cognitive, emotional, and behavioral benefits of music education for children.
Singing and playing music is one of the most effective ways to help young people learn. The benefits include a longer attention span, emotional stability, resilience and cognitive capacity.
Nearly everyone enjoys music, whether by listening to it, singing, or playing an instrument. But despite this almost universal interest, many schools are choosing to do away with their music education programs.
This is a mistake, with schools losing not only an enjoyable subject, but a subject that can enrich students’ lives and education.
Music education is so important, and it offers benefits even beyond itself.

Music is the divine way to tell beautiful, poetic things to the heart.
