January in Review & World Theatre Day ! Theatre and a Culture of Peace !

World Theatre Day 2023

"Theatre in its original essence is a purely human act based on the true essence of humanity, which is life."

Samiha Ayoub, Egyptian actress, World Theatre Day message 2023

World Theatre Day was initiated in 1961 by the International Theatre Institute (ITI). It is celebrated annually on the 27th March by ITI Centres and the international theatre community.

The first World Theatre Day International Message was written by Jean Cocteau the French poet, playwright, novelist, designer, filmmaker, visual artist and critic in 1962.

Theatre of Nations Paris

Ever since, each year on the 27th March (date of the opening of the 1962 Theatre of Nations season in Paris, World Theatre Day has been celebrated in many and varied ways by ITI Centres - of which there are now more than 90 throughout the world. Moreover theatres, theatre professionals, theatre lovers, theatre universities, academies and schools celebrate it as well.

Education:

To celebrate this day, teachers can go to the theater near your school with students. Moreover, they can find some ways to develop all kinds of theater and try to enjoy it all over the world.

Create awareness so that students are aware of the value of theater in all its forms.

Post thoughts on social media like Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, about the love of theatre with the hashtag #WorldTheaterDay.

Activities:

  • Visit a theatre near you

Visiting a local theater can be the start of a very enjoyable activity to your students.

  • Study the history of a theatre at your town.

Theaters have been a part of human society for hundreds of years. This week is the perfect period to acquaint your students and you with the history of some establishment near your school.

  • Celebrate a theatre artist

If you know a theater artist, celebrate them, especially during UNESCO-ITI World Theater Week. You may even encourage a student or two to consider a career in the theater arts themselves.

Teachers:

Go to the theatre with your students! Best lesson you can share with your students about theatre.

If you  can't go, why not inviting your class to play a piece of theatre at your school?

Invite different classes or even invite the parents to join you.

Students love to play theatre. They embrace enthusiastically this activity.
free and love to have characters

Students can follow the different celebrations and events organized for WTD 2023 all over the world.

Level: All levels

Of course you must adapt the play  to the age and level you are teaching.

Curriculum: Languages, Literature, Arts

"What we do in the world of theatre as playwrights, directors, actors, scenographers, poets, musicians, choreographers and technicians, all of us without exception, is an act of creating life that did not exist before we got on stage. This life deserves a caring hand that holds it, a loving chest that embraces it, a kind heart that sympathizes with it, and a sober mind that provides it with the reasons it needs to continue and survive."

Pinocchio
Guillermo del Toro

Pinocchio's adventures are not always funny. Indeed, they are sometimes sinister.

Please let your students watch the video above. They would better understand why and how Guillermo del Toro magically imagined and directed his beautiful Pinocchio animation stop-motion.

For the first time after years of adaptions, Guillermo del Toro told us the real story written by Carlo Collodi. So as I wrote before, teachers must pay attention to little kids.

“Animation is not a genre for kids, it’s a medium.”

The film is not similar to the traditional Disney story. It's different. It's the real story! Some scenes can shock kids. Guillermo del Toro’s eye for scene design coupled with his attention to detail that makes stop-motion filmmaking so palpably engaging and visually appealing, someone wrote.

Hoping to have inspired you someway in your lessons all over the last year. Blog resumes as normal next week.
