Europeana Remix - new interactive project

"An interactive experience around the story of an unlikely friendship during the First World War."

How to combine history and modern technology? Europeana, the European digital library, museum and archive, has opened a new interactive video space, Europeana Remix, which  enriches a 4.30mn short film on a First World War friendship using the latest HTML5 and Popcorn.js technology.

Europeana Remix is an interactive platform based on the film ‘Otto & Bernard’ a short film produced for the project Europeana Erster Weltkrieg, encouraging families to share photos, letters and memorabilia of World War One.

Yesterday, September 26, Europeana launched its first interactive video. Based on a short film that was produced as a result of a crowdsourcing project “The First World War in everyday documents”, the video now turns into a new enriching experience. Watch the video here

Education:

How captivating can be a History lesson if you invite your  students to watch the interactive video on Europeana website!

It is impossible not to include such an important digital resource in your lessons!

I am sure that your students were attracted by Luisa Arndt story! She was excited to participate in this video with her storyline and she shared some thoughts about her experience:

" I was excited to take part in the project to meet new people and to visit the
different locations of the shoots, such as Oxford Birmingham and St Omer."

Luisa also said that she liked the idea of “The First World War in everyday documents” and she was happy to support it with her participation in the video.

I think it’s very useful to make historical documents accessible to people. This way, young people can find out more about the past and maybe even about their ancestors.”

Luisa Arndt

If you teach in an European school, debate with your students the possibility of telling their parents, or grandparents to share some ancestor photos or documents about 1st World War.

"Europeana’s work on the First World War sets out to discover untold stories, to share them across borders, and to invite responses from around Europe as we approach the centenary of the conflict. We encourage people to share ideas, stories, comments and links on this platform."

Your students can  share their projects on Europeana Facebook or Twitter.

 Other resources:

"Europeana enables people to explore the digital resources of Europe's museums, libraries, archives and audio-visual collections. It promotes discovery and networking opportunities in a multilingual space where users can engage, share in and be inspired by the rich diversity of Europe's cultural and scientific heritage."

Remember, as an educator, you can register on MyEuropeana and access easily to all the documents you need to prepare your lessons on this wonderful digital Library. You can choose your native language.

Meanwhile, you can also participate in Europeana's community space linked to useful resources that can help you to explore, learn and share more about Europe's cultural and scientific heritage. They include photo sharing sites, forums and innovative digital projects.

For the moment, you and your students have good links to Maps and Cartography, Biodiversity, Art Nouveau, Medieval |Renaissance.

It is very important that the students might observe, discover, explore and study authentic documents. Digital or interactive is an approach that they will love.

Of course, they must use their iPad (if they are lucky) or smartphones in the classroom to do their own research and explore all the resources they can have.

It's Sunday!

Cesária Évora, the "Barefoot Diva" from Cape Vert retires from music at age 70 for health reasons.

The Cape Verdean singer has been hailed as one of the world's greatest morna singers. And she sings in Creole, the Cape Verdean language (Portuguese language mixed with native language from Cabo Verde).

"The ballads of loss and homesickness that led to comparisions to Edith Piaf and Billie Holiday are considered the national music of Cape Verde, much as fado is for Portugal."

Nha Sentimento
(last album, 2009)

Évora began singing in the bars of Mindelo on São Vicente. Some year after she became to Portugal where she is most appreciated. Her albums Mar Azul, Miss Perfumado, but most of all her song Sodade brought the singer to an international career.

In 1988 she was invited to Paris to make a record, La Diva Aux Pieds Nus – which spread her "barefoot diva" nickname worldwide.

By 1995, Cesária album was released in 20 countries and nominated for a Grammy. Évora finally began touring major concert halls across all over the world for 15 years.

Last years she quiet alcohol addiction for health reasons.

Read her interview with the French newspaper Le Monde.

"Sodade" (saudade) is a Portuguese word "which describes a deep emotional state of nostalgic longing for something or someone that one loves and which is apart", but when the word used to describe the emotional essence of Cabo Verde's signature musical style, morna

Education:

Cesaria Evora would be a good example to talk about native languages and traditional music in the classroom.

European Researchers' Night 2011

Poderá consultar toda a Programação nacional

"The European Researchers' Night is a pan-European event involving a wide range of scientific and research organisations, including museums, laboratories and academic institutions.

Hosting a variety of fun events running late into the night, the aim is to give the public, and in particular young people, the opportunity to meet researchers in a relaxed environment and to highlight the appeal of pursuing a research career."

Watch now the clip to see how Mostra promoted the event in advance of the night's activities today, 23 September...

The Researchers' Night is a Europe-wide event bringing together the public at large and researchers once a year on the fourth Friday of September. This year it takes place on 23 September in over 800 venues of  320 European cities in 32 countries.

"During the "Researchers' Night# you will have the chance to discover research facilities that are usually not open to public (laboratories, research centres, museum collections), to use the most recent technologies and instruments with the guidance of scientists, to participate in experiments, competitions and quizzes, to watch demonstrations and simulations, to exchange ideas and to party with the researchers. For one night, everyone can be a scientist."

Education:

Certainly a different Sciences lesson if you and your students join other groups of students and educators that will be for everywhere to participate in such good pedagogical experience.

Let your students meet the real scientists, talk to them, make some curious questions, understand the real meaning of Science.

Please find the activities in your own country here

Go out the classroom for a different lesson, even at night. A captivating Science live lesson!

Ask for some volunteers among parents. They will love to participate in learning process of their kids.

Don't underestimate social networks like Facebook profiles from a lot of   European schools or Twitter profiles linked to #Researchers' Night 2011.

"Researchers' Night gives scientists the chance to connect with the public and the public to experience the world of science. During this one evening, anyone can be a scientist. I can think of no better way to get young people excited about science and interested in the possibility of a research career."

Androulla VassiliouEuropean Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth.

Cyberlearning? It's personalised learning

In this video produced by KQED we could watch how new developments in computer-mediated learning can enhance educational experiences.

If the video is not available on the post, please watch here.

Education:

Hearing experts and watching learners to explore three examples of cyberlearning:

  • Students learn about astronomy and game design in the Universe Quest project;
  • Students use remote scientific equipment to learn about radiation with the iLab Network;
  • Students use handheld devices to play an augmented reality game from MIT and learn about climate change.

Yes! Cyberlearning is the connection of informal learning (outside of the school) and learning of the classroom.

It is the personalised learning that manages every students individual needs. Students make control of their learning and they learn.

And, of course, students learn because they feel the real interest of teachers in motivating them and supporting their own individual needs.

Students learn from teachers they love. No doubt!
