The day is used to celebrate everything that women have achieved whilst also calling for equality.

The United Nations (UN) - an organisation that aims to bring countries from around the world together on world issues - says this year's theme is "For ALL Women and Girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment."

Every year for the past century the 8 March has been recognised as International Women's Day.

Many governments and organisations mark the occasion by celebrating the role and rights of women across the world.

Historically, women and girls have not been treated as equal to men and boys and across the world women still face discrimination because of their gender.

For centuries, women have fought for equal rights, opportunities, and freedom. From the suffragists to digital activists, each generation has pushed boundaries, shattered barriers, and refused to step back. Behind every policy change and legal victory there have been fearless feminists organizing, protesting, and demanding action.

In knowing and pushing forward for progress, there is hope: 

• For 89 per cent of governments, ending violence against women is a top priority today, and 193 countries have legal measures against it.  

• Data shows that countries with domestic violence laws have seen less cases of violence against women. 

• Most of the world has reached parity in education. By bridging the gender gap in accessing and shaping science and technology, we clear the remaining bottlenecks to equal opportunities and create technology that serves more people and the planet. 

• More States have strengthened care services and 32 per cent of countries globally now promote better pay and safe working conditions for care workers.  

• There are 112 countries with a national plan to engage women in peace and security processes – a significant increase from 19 countries in 2010.

Their work represents the ongoing progress towards gender equality, yet STEM remains one of the areas where significant gaps still persist. Currently, women represent only 29% of the global STEM workforce. But this number grows larger every year.

WAAW is celebrated from 18-24 November every year. Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is an increasingly serious threat to global public health that requires action across all government sectors and society. It has significant impacts on human and animal health, food production and the environment.

• Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) occurs when bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites change over time and no longer respond to medicines, making infections harder to treat and increasing the risk of disease spread, severe illness and death. 

• As a result of drug resistance, antibiotics and other antimicrobial medicines become ineffective and infections become increasingly difficult or impossible to treat.

Drug-resistant-pathogens pose a threat to everyone, everywhere. Yet, much more can be done to raise public and stakeholder awareness.

Key objectives:

 

One of the key objectives of the plan is to improve awareness and understanding of AMR through effective communication, education and training.

• Theme 2024: “Educate. Advocate. Act now.” 

The theme for the World AMR Awareness Week (WAAW) 2024 is “Educate. Advocate. Act now.” This theme was chosen based on feedback from an online survey among stakeholders from the human, animal, plant, and environmental health sectors, which collected nearly 200 responses. Globally much more can be done to raise public and stakeholder awareness.

Teachers can include into Science curriculum this campaign to students and motivate them to participate at the campaign following the guide to support WAAW 2024. 

This campaign guide offers key information and ideas on how you and your students can join and participate in the commemoration of WAAW. 

It serves as a resource inspiring and guiding you and your students developing activities that address the impact of AMR on our world. 

The guide includes the campaign theme, calls to action, how to participate, social media information and links to various campaign resources. 

WHO hopes it will inspire teachers and students in Science curricula to develop their own local activities. This support is crucial to the success of this campaign.

• Activities: For young people and student groups

Reach out to policymakers with real-life AMR stories and bold statements on the need to preserve the effectiveness of antimicrobials for future generations. 

Lead awareness-raising activities: 

• Organize educational events such as : walks, talks, competitions, workshops and seminars within your communities. 

• Raise AMR awareness in other schools and show the linkages to water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), vaccines, pollution, climate change, gender equality, among other important issues. 

• Raise awareness through social media campaigns: Share examples of advocacy work and learnings to inspire other students and schools in your country or in coordination of European schools to become AMR champions.

• Collaborate on research projects: Engage in or support research projects that focus on finding solutions to this pressing crisis.

As we already know, International Museum Day is organised on 18 May each year or around this date.

The events and activities planned to celebrate International Museum Day can last a day, a weekend or an entire week. 

IMD was celebrated for the first time 40 years ago. All around the world, more and more museums participate in International Museum Day. Last year, more than 37,000 museums participated in the event in about 158 countries and territories.

This year's theme, "Museums for Education and Research", underscore the pivotal role of cultural institutions in providing a holistic educational experience.

This day pushes for more conscious, sustainable and inclusive world.

Museums are vital venues for cultural exchange and enrichment, as well as for the development of peaceful coexistence and cooperation among nations and communities. 

This day or entire weekend or week encourages people and students to visit museums dedicated to many fields of human endeavor such as agriculture, fashion, astronomy, archaeology, art, and natural history.

For IMD 2024 ICOM invite people, teachers, parents, students, universities and schools to rethink education and imagine a future where knowledge sharing transcends barriers, where innovation unites with tradition.

Museums preserve heritage for future generations, promote cultural learning, provide equal access to culture and spread the values on which humanity is based.

Their function in terms of social inclusion is also vital to help keep societies together, and they play a major role in the creative and civics education. 

The authors also draw attention to traditional educational activities that are hosted by museums, such as school visits, guided tours and workshops. 

Don't forget as well virtual guided tours that some museums offer to teachers and students because many museums worldwide are forced to close their doors.

Young people are visiting more and more the museums. Teachers could be good guides to help young people to enjoy Museums live or virtual visits.

Teachers have an entire weekend to talk about art and culture visiting museums live or virtual and celebrating museums at school.

Check out some pedagogical ideas of mine to explore and support activities at a museum and/or at school with your students:

• Visit a museum with your students. Please read Uma Aula no Museu  (Portuguese language) an interesting pedagogical project developing creative writing and artistic skills through Portuguese painter Paula Rego: cross-curricular project Languages, Arts, History, Music, IT;  
• Include Museum events into your school curriculum. Invite your students to a school visit a museum;
• Ask every student to choose a painting or sculpture, some chef-d'oeuvre from the the different views at the a museum to get inspiration to write creative stories and drawing some interesting works;

• Explore a virtual school exchange to develop during the cultural week;
• Explore virtual museum tours. Invite your students to spend some time enjoying Google Arts & Culture, Google Street Art; 
• Visit different exhibitions at international museums using apps: For example Musée des Arts et Métiers (Paris); Thyssen Museum (Madrid); Van Gogh Museum (Amsterdam); Art Legacy, bringing art to life; 
• Or virtual tours Museu Nacional dos Coches (Lisbon); Museu Serralves Museu Serralves (Porto); Museu da Música (Lisboa); Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History (Washington);
• Another activity could be a #selfie at the Museum. During a visit to a Museum near your school, invite the students to snap selfies with an artefact of their choice to a project at school,
