Education : Prince of Persia : Games in School

Prince of Persia: Sands of Time

Once again, let's talk about movies and games at the classroom, this time to   teach the "Narrative text".

A narrative is a story that is created in a constructive format (as a work of writing, speech, poetry, prose, pictures, song, motion pictures, video games, theatre or dance) that describes a sequence of fictional or non-fictional events.

Efquel Innovation Forum Lisboa 2010
Engage workshop

Prince of Persia: Games at School included into the curriculum, was part of my presentation at the Workshop for teachers EFQUEL Innovation Forum Lisboa 2010.

My presentation Creative learning in the digital age (OER, GBL, Mobile Learning in Secondary Education).

It was the first educational adaptation from a video game and the film Price of Persia.

A huge success among teachers who participated on the workshop.

  • The game & the film:

We all know the game Prince of Persia: Sands of Time! Of course!  But a live-action adaptation of a video game series to a movie, sometimes, it's not a good idea! This is not the case of Prince of Persia.

Prince of Persia (PC)

Prince of Persia Sands of Time, developed at Ubisoft Montreal, successfully captures the mechanics of the original platformer and extends it to the 3D generation.

The Sands of Time was praised for its visual design, finely tuned game mechanics, and intriguing storyline, winning the game several awards.2)

The game has been developed between play station and PC and now mobile phones.

Prince of Persia (PC)

It's fairly short, and it's missing the console versions' bonus features, but Prince of Persia is a truly excellent action adventure game for as long as it lasts.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is a 2010 epic action-adventure film written by Jordan Mechner, directed by Mike Newell  - Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire - and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and Walt Disney Pictures.

The film is based on a mix of  2003 video game of the same name, developed and released by Ubisoft Montreal.

    Prince of Persia
    Mike Newell, 2010

Despite the film having the same title as and being primarily based on the video game Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, elements from "Prince of Persia: Warrior Within and Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones, two other titles from the Prince of Persia video game franchise, are also incorporated.3)

    Synopsis:

Dastan a rogue prince (Jake Gyllenhaal) reluctantly joins forces with Tamina a mysterious princess (Gemma Arterton) and together, they race against dark forces to safeguard an ancient dagger capable of releasing the Sands of Time - a gift from the gods that can reverse time and allow its possessor to rule the world.

    Education:

    Prince of Persia (video game)

Young people love this kind of stories, right? A young warrior-prince and a fetching damsel scamper across the desert sands to keep a magical dagger out of the hands of villains who would control time.

A wonderful narrative, with a bit of magic and a lots of adventure and special effects. I just loved it! And my students too.

Prince of Persia, the film and the game have all the elements to motivate young students to learn the Narrative text in Languages and Literature curriculum.

    • Narrative is central to children’s and young students learning. They use it as a tool to help them organize their ideas and to explore new ideas and experiences.
    • Composing stories, whether told or written, involves a set of skills and authorial knowledge but is also an essential means for children to express themselves creatively and imaginatively.

It's a fun action-adventure movie. The camera exquisitely follows the video game’s style. That gives the real enjoy of the game, the interaction between the characters and the story are really attractive and not bored till the film's end.

Students can easily follow the narrative, generic structure, characters, action, grammar, and vocabulary.

    Some thoughts:

As teachers we need activities that can help the students to develop their vocabulary and to stimulate a desire of communication. We need an activity in where students will not feel bored.

Games and films are not only motivating and fun but. They can also provide excellent practice for students to improve pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, and languages skills.

Immerse yourself and your students in the captivating Prince of Persia universe with an original and independent story that closely coincides with the action of the console & PC editions of the game, and teach your students the "Narrative text" in a different but consistent way of learning.

Don't miss two important interactive digital resources (a game and a film)! So funny to teach and learn in a different way proposing fresh and interactive digital resources

"The using of games provides a unique opportunity for students sel-assess their progress in learning professional vocabulary and for a teacher to assess students' progress informally whihout causing stress and anxiety."

    Kavaliauskiene, 2000

    Vizati a Portuguese video game

    Vizati

    Vizati

Vizati is a puzzle game that will put your mind to the test. It has been created by two young people Rita Silva and David Amador from Different Pixel (Portugal).

    Education:

Students will appreciate a this puzzle that will keep them mentally untangle a problem, then crack it using a few considered manoeuvres.

The game has two modes: arcade and story.

    • Arcade: students must to rotate a magical cube to connect (group) the little vizati stones by color and figure out the best way to do it with a limited number of rotations/moves.

    • Story: They can play the Story Mode and follow the story between Julie and Peter who discovered the Vizati cube, or play the Arcade Mode, which is a rawer, faster and even more teasing mode.

"Indeed, it's the gentile nature and subtle story that decorates Vizati's mind-bending main mode that sticks with you, above everything else. With the square itself sat somewhere in the countryside, life actually goes on around you during play, with passers by reacting to its movements and setting off the whole of play with an unusual, but nonetheless memorable, context."

Education and Equality "International Children's Day"

    Photo: Marta Ramoneda

At Dakar the Conference  “Engendering Empowerment: Education and Equality” (E4), was run for three days and marked the 10th anniversary of the United Nations Girls’ Education Initiative (UNGEI).

The E4 conference was organized by the United Nations Girls’ Education Initiative (UNGEI) to mark the tenth anniversary of the UNGEI global partnership.  UNGEI was launched by former Secretary-General Kofi Annan at the World Education Forum, also in Dakar.

As education, particularly for girls, is threatened to be pushed onto the back burner, this conference was open on the 16th May 2010 to put girls’ education front and center.

Girls, who in many societies are more excluded than boys, are at the core of development efforts, such as the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). MDG 2, in particular, is a globally-agreed target of ensuring universal primary education by 2015.

Evidence shows that unleashing the potential of girls, by providing them a quality education is an effective tool to address poverty, fight disease, and grow economies.
Reaching the most marginalized girls will, however, be the biggest challenge.

The high-level international gathering of the Conference had bring together over 200 global experts to unlock quality education opportunities for girls and boys worldwide.

    Photo: Giacomo Pirozzi

Primary to secondary transition rates, retention rates, quality education and education of adolescent girls were identified as dynamics that must be tackled if the world is to reach the Education for All and the Millennium Development Goals.

“Dakar can boost efforts to close the gender gap by promoting girls’ education and can also lead to implementing strategies for reaching other marginalized and excluded children, like those affected by emergencies, displaced children, children with disabilities and those ostracized by disease, ethnicity or distance.”
