Civics Education : Zero Discrimination Day : some information

Zero Discrimination Day 2020
Today March 1 is Zero Discrimination Day, a chance to celebrate diversity and to reject discrimination.
The United Nations has kicked off the 2020 global edition of Zero Discrimination Day as part of the Organization's wider effort to spur solidarity towards ending discrimination.

Zero Discrimination Day

Theme 2020:
"Zero discrimination against women and girls.”
On Zero Discrimination Day, 1 March, we celebrate the right of everyone to live a full and productive life, and live it with dignity.
Zero Discrimination Day highlights how people can become informed about and promote inclusion, compassion, peace and, above all, a movement for change.
Zero Discrimination Day is helping to create a global movement of solidarity to end all forms of discrimination

On 1st March Zero Discrimination Day, will celebrate the right to live life. UNAIDS is challenging the discrimination faced by girls and women in all their diversity in order to raise awareness to promote equality and mobilize action and empowerment for women and girls.

Millions of women and girls in every region of the world, for instance, experience violence and abuse on a daily basis and struggle to access adequate health care and education.
The United Nations (UN) has celebrated 1st Zero Discrimination Day on 1st March 2014, UNAIDS has launched Zero Discrimination on World Aids Day in Dec 2013.
On Zero Discrimination Day this year, UNAIDS is challenging the discrimination faced by women and girls in all their diversity and raising awareness and mobilizing action to promote equality and empowerment for women and girls.

Although some countries have made laudable progress towards greater gender equality, discrimination against women and girls still exists everywhere. Intersecting with other forms of discrimination based, for example, on income, race, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation or gender identity. These rights violations disproportionately harm women and girls.
Ultimately, gender inequality affects everyone’s health and well-being. In many countries, laws that discriminate against women and girls remain in force, while laws that uphold women’s basic rights and protect them against harm and unequal treatment are far from the norm.
Education:

Zero Discrimination Day is a pedagogical activity teachers must include into school curriculum.
We know  that discrimination exists at school between students. How often teachers are called to help some students who are suffering some stigma and discrimination from their schoolmates.

And on these days there is violence against girls by boys as boy friends. Or at home between mother and father.

Teachers must discuss clearly these subjects at the classroom. Violence against girls and women is a huge problem in our society.

Not only today but everyday, in our lessons, at school, teachers and students have the chance to celebrate diversity and reject discrimination.

It's time to develop some important values in everyday lessons as comprehension, compassion, tolerance, solidarity, encouragement, friendship.

Teachers will prepare some activities to include Zero Discrimination Day into their lessons next week.

Being inspired by the butterfly, the symbol for zero discrimination, students can debating the role of women and girls in the XXI century.

Of course teachers will adapt resources and activities to the level they are teaching and age of students.

Civics Education : World Day Against Trafficking in Persons #LeaveNoOneBehind !

credits: UN

"Human trafficking is a crime that exploits women, children and men for numerous purposes including forced labour and sex."
30 July marks the World Day Against Trafficking in PersonsTo mark this special day, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) are encouraging people across the globe to express their solidarity with the millions of victims of human trafficking by giving back what they had stolen from them: hope.
The International Labour Organization estimates that 21 million people are victims of forced labour globally. This estimate also includes victims of human trafficking for labour and sexual exploitation. While it is not known how many of these victims were trafficked, the estimate implies that currently, there are millions of trafficking in persons victims in the world.
Every country in the world is affected by human trafficking, whether as a country of origin, transit, or destination for victims.

https://www.un.org/

"Children make up almost a third of all human trafficking victims worldwide, according to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime Global Report on Trafficking in Persons. Additionally, women and girls comprise 71 per cent of human trafficking victims, the report states."
In September 2015, the world adopted the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda and embraced goals and targets on trafficking in persons. These goals call for an end to trafficking and violence against children; as well as the need for measures against human trafficking, and they strive for the elimination of all forms of violence against and exploitation of women and girls.
Of the nineteen commitments adopted by countries in the Declaration, three are dedicated to concrete action against the crimes of human trafficking and migrant smuggling.

  • Theme 2023

"Reach every victim of trafficking, leave no one behind."

This year the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) has chosen ‘act to protect and assist trafficked persons’ as the focus of the World Day  World Day Against Trafficking in Persons

This topic highlights one of the most pressing issues of our time - the large mixed migration movements of refugees and migrants. The theme puts the spotlight on the significant impact of conflict and natural disasters, as well as the resultant, multiple risks of human trafficking that many people face.

It addresses the key issue concerning trafficking responses: that most people are never identified as trafficking victims and therefore cannot access most of the assistance or protection provided.

Education:

But we can change that. Together!

Teachers and students are enjoying the summer break. However, we can't forget those children and young adolescents who are among the human trafficking people.

This kind of inhuman violence against children is everywhere. We can't turn a blind eye. It’s impossible.

All children have the right to live free from traffick violence. Violence which keep children away from their family. Violence which harms their physical and mental growth. Violence which holds back every society.

We must show our solidarity with victims of human trafficking.

Participate online as a holiday activity on 30 July and all along the week, marking the World Day throughout the globe.

We have a school blog and social media accounts in our name or school account. We can alert our students about the World Day Against Trafficking Persons and call them to support #BlueHeart social media campaign.

I'm sure we and our students will support this #ActToProtect social media campaign.

Students love social media, they are connected all day long.And they are kind, they practice solidarity to other children and young people.

Note:

If you are preparing your lessons to the next school year (August or September depending of the country or continent where you are teaching), think to include this human subject into your Civics lessons. There's always time to share civic values.

Civics education : World Humanitarian Day 2016

credits: UNocha

"World Humanitarian Day is an annual reminder of the need to act to alleviate the suffering. It is also an occasion to honour the humanitarian workers and volunteers toiling on the frontlines of crises. I pay tribute to these dedicated women and men who brave danger to help others at far greater risk."

UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon

World Humanitarian Day is observed every year on 19 August as a way to recognize those who face‪ ‎danger‬ and adversity in order to help‬ others.

Why?

Every day, humanitarian aid workers stand on the front lines of war and disaster, braving tremendous dangers and difficulties to deliver assistance to those who need it most.

The day was designated by the General Assembly to coincide with the anniversary of the 2003 bombing of the United Nations headquarters in Baghdad which claimed the lives of 22 of our United Nations colleagues.

Serving the cause of ‪‎peace‬ is a dangerous occupation. Today and always we UN and all of us ‪‎remember‬ the humanitarians.

Serving the cause of ‪‎peace is a dangerous occupation.

World Humanitarian Day is also an opportunity to celebrate the spirit that inspires humanitarian work around the globe.
The theme 2016 is "One Humanity"
This World Humanitarian Day, the UN and its partners are calling for global solidarity with the more than 130 million people around the world who need humanitarian assistance to survive.
"Under the theme of ‘One Humanity’, World Humanitarian Day will highlight how the world came together in Istanbul for the World Humanitarian Summit earlier in May this year, and made commitments to support people affected by crisis and ensure that aid workers can safely and more effectively deliver to those in need."

Following on the ‘Impossible Choices’ campaign earlier this year, the WHD digital campaign The World You’d Rather will launch on 19 August.
Featuring a quiz based on the popular game Would you rather, the digital campaign will bring to light the very real scenarios faced by people in crisis.
After being confronted with challenging choices, users will be able to share a personalized graphic on social media, tweet their world leader and learn about the Agenda for Humanity.

Education:

Humanitarianism it’s human beings at their cooperative, collaborative best and it happens all over the place, everyday, through informal activities that are built naturally into healthy communities and relationships.

How can we not include WHD into the school curriculum? Civics is the right curriculum however every curriculum must talk about solidarity and do some activities in the classroom or online (a students blog, for example).

And why not join the humanitarians in simple acts as a part of Civics Education: Inspiring our students since the early age is  a value that we can't waste.

Activities :

Students can take the Humanitarian Quiz What world would you rather live inThe World You’d Rather;

Send a message of support directly on WHD website;

Do a #selfie of a humanitarian actin and/or do a shot of a good action they saw on the street, at the school, even at home;

Using the #sharehumanity hashtag they can advocate for solidarity to the more than 130 million people affected by crisis;

Perhaps they have in the family, a member who is a volunteer? They will be proud to share the story and a pic - who knows - with you and their classmates;

Share their class projects on the official school website, on a blog if the class have one and on the social media school account: Instagram; Facebook; Twitter; Google +;

They will love to interact with some students from other schools of the world by social media;

Write letters to Syrian children from the Unicef website.
Level : All levels

Of course educators will include different activities adjusting to the level they are teaching. I'm sure you will be creative.

Curriculum : Civics; Languages ; Geography ; History ; Photography ; Music ; other.

“With solidarity, you will be more talented and handier, you will be taller and stronger, faster and wiser!”

The theme of 2015 is "Inspiring the World's Humanity"
This year, the UN and its humanitarian partners invite all of us to inspire the world’s humanity. The theme calls on us to join any of the world’s humanitarian organizations and become an active messenger of Humanity.
"The first day of action is today, 19 August: World Humanitarian Day. This is a day to celebrate humanitarians around the world. In an effort to build a global sense of momentum, we will call on our Messengers of Humanity to take an important social action on this day and share them on your social networks and amplify the message."
