Protecting children is not down to social workers alone. Parents, school and health professinals are a part of it. It is inconceivable to most people how signs of life-threatening abuse can be missed.
In many instances, the child at the centre of a tragedy had been regularly visited by social workers in the weeks leading to the death.
But poor communication between professionals is one of the major problems that all people involved in caring for children need to tackle.

Child protection systems have long ceased to be a tool for safeguarding children because society change all the time.
"Social workers are not qualified to identify and interpret children's injuries. Nor are they trained or authorised physically to inspect children, yet they are commonly castigated for failing to observe and report physical injuries to children. If we want to safeguard children believed to be at risk of physical abuse, we should take the obvious step of ensuring that they are examined at regular intervals by a health professional."

It's a complex work and essential to help family and school! Social workers need to think how they can create a profession in wich cildren will trust to feel secure in case of life-threatening abuse.
