Schools & IT : Olive, a film about loneliness : some values

Olive
Patrick Gilles & Hooman Khali, 2011

Olive is the very first full length feature film shot 100% on a cellphone. The crew shot the film with a smartphone mounted to a modified 35-mm lens, to achieve a shallow depth of field.

It’s crazy how far cellphone camera technology has advanced!
Olive follows the story of a little girl that transforms the lives of three people without speaking one word.
The film boasts the involvement of the two time Oscar Academy Award nominated 81 year old actress Gena Rowlands (The Notebook, A Woman Under the Influence, Gloria).

  • Synopsis:

The film is about a little girl that goes into the lives of three people — an old lonely woman, a foreigner having a hard time acclimating in the United States, and an obese man — and transforms their lives without saying one word!

A mysterious child with magical powers and a great secret, invades the lives of three lonely people who learn to embrace life once again.

Olive is the first full-length feature film shot entirely on a cell phone, a Nokia N8 smartphone.

“Technology is moving so quickly and cellphones are really going to be the thing that does everything eventually,” director Hooman Khalili told AFP in an interview ahead of the US theater release of his movie on December 16, 2011.

Set for release in Los Angeles next week, the movie is eligible to be nominated for the Oscars in February.

“I thought, how great would it be to have a central character that doesn't speak but you understand everything she is trying to communicate,”

 Hooman Khalili (director)

Education:

It's Christmas time! So many old people are alone on December and festive season.

Olive could be an interesting motivation to introduce the importance of values such as loneliness in old age, in school education. Here we can explore solidarity:

Values:
  • Sometimes, young people cross old people who have problems about loneliness. It's not so difficult to help old people with a word or a smile and give some 'sunshine' into their lives with a single gesture.
  • Every Christmas season, when December begins, my students and I had activities of solidarity included and developed in Languages curriculum.

I do remember, two years ago, I proposed different activities. I included some subjects into school curriculum. My students chose the activity. There were two or three, but the students chose to write Christmas cards and send them by mail to three elderly homes.

The old people in those elderly homes (women and men) were so touched that some of them answered to my students telling how lonely they were feeling and the joy of receiving a card from somebody for the first time in years.

So, after Christmas season, we decided to visit the elderly homes to meet those old people ! They were so touched and it was a good experience to students. They felt very happy about their activity.

“Every single one of us at one time of our lives is down in a ditch… The way you get out of that ditch is by having someone reach you with their hand and pull you out,”

Hooman Khalili

Environmental Education in curriculum

Hamburg

"Europe is an urban society, with many environmental challenges to face.  The European Commission has long recognised the important role that local authorities play in improving the environment, and their high level of commitment to genuine progress."

The European Green Capital Award has been conceived as an initiative to  promote and reward these efforts.
The award aims to provide an incentive for cities to inspire each other and share best practices, while at the same time engaging in friendly competition. In other words, the cities become role models for each other.

So, after Stockholm 2010, Hamburg is the current "European Green Capital", chosen between 34 cities from 17 different European countries that applied for the title.
"Green Capital 2011, Hamburg is a learning city, seeking out best-practices from fellow European cities promoting sustainable development.  Mutual learning, the exchange of problems and solutions and themes of the future are essential to promoting greater sustainability in cities."

Education:

"Our planet, our home is being neglected. Climate change continues unabated. It seems there's a new ecological disaster happening almost daily."

Schools have an important role promoting environmental education as a Civics value.

I have already publish different posts about environment and education. Earth Day 2008; Environmental education and outdoorEarth Hour 2011: It's time to go beyond the hour; Fate of the World: a SG in school; Green Actions for Earth Day 2011Earth Day 2011; Earth Day 2011: a Story about the Forest,

For years, I shared my green ideas with the students. Today, I know that they are young citizens who care about Environment. And some of them are involved as volunteers in different NGO's.

Level: All levels;

Curriculum: Environment | Civics is a cross-curricula;

Educators can provide resources for students educating for a sustainable future.

And students will evolve in creative green projects  that they will share with families and friends.

Among different past activities and projects, a group of Portuguese students (higher junior school, up 12), published a green blog in 2008. Now, only a small volunteer group, is continuing to update the blog and has already published a post (Portuguese language) about Hamburg Green European Capital 2011.

"Hamburg is one of Europe’s greenest cities. Parks, green spaces and trees shape the look of the city and promote a high quality of life. Hamburg’s nature enthusiasts enjoy a diverse array of green spaces located within the city center and throughout Hamburg’s outer region such as the National Wadden Sea national park."

Vitoria-Gasteiz, Greeb Capital 2012

The next "European Green Capital" will be Vitoria-Gasteiz 2012 (Spain) next Nantes 2013 (France).

So, it's time for European educators to motivate their students in different curriculum to explore environmental resources and involve the schools in "green" activities for the next European Green Capital.

The short video below shows why Hamburg is the current "European Green Capital", and examines the benefits of being a "European Green Capital".

So don't miss out! Get your city involved to be the next "European Green Capital " in 2014

"Your choices make a world of difference. Do you want to live life to the full while respecting nature? Then Generation Awake is for you.

It's all about opening our eyes to our consumer choices and the consequences they have on the earth's natural resources. When you're part of Generation Awake, you're aware that your choices not only change your world, but also the planet."

Music : Vocational Schools : Pat Metheny & his guitar !

Pat Metheney | New Album

What’s It All About, we have, yet again, another angle to consider in the Metheny oeuvre

After nearly 40 recordings under his own name, this is the first Metheny album where there is not a single Metheny composition represented.

About the album:

But far from being a “covers” album, this a personal view of ten classic songs, some very well known, some less so, filtered through the harmonic and melodic ideology of a modern master with a most individual approach."

Watch the video above:

Nomination Grammy 2012:

Pat Metheny's beautiful solo guitar record, What's It All About has been nominated for a 2012 Grammy award.

This is the 35th Grammy nomination for Metheny.

Pat Metheny

Education:

Pat Metheny is one of the best guitar players! Teachers must consider to include the musician into vocational curriculum to talk about his wonderful musicality and technique. Students will love to learn more about Metheny. The guitar is one of the most interesting musical instrument and kids love to play.

Let them hear some music of this new album, and prepare some practical activities.
