Ada Lovelace Day (ALD) is an international celebration day of the achievements of women in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM).

Founded in 2009 by Suw Charman-Anderson, it is now held every year on the second Tuesday of October. 

Ada Lovelace Day, aiming to raise the profile of women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics and celebrate their achievements.

The day is named after Lord Byron’s daughter Ada, a mathematician who worked with Charles Babbage to create and program the world’s first general purpose computer, the analytical engine, creating the precursor to modern programming.

The day also includes dozens of grassroots events around the world, organised entirely independently from the ALD Live!event. 

These events take many forms — from conferences to Wikipedia ‘edit-a-thons’ to pub quizzes — and appeal to all ages, from girls to university students to women with well-established careers. Last year and was the biggest ALD to date with over 150 independently organised Ada Lovelace Day events, in 82 cities, in 25 countries.

Some information:

Called the 'Enchantress of number' by Charles Babbage, Lovelace was the daughter of infamous poet Lord Byron and the admired intellect Annabella Milbanke. 

She studied science and maths at a time when women rarely had access to such subjects and collaborated with Babbage on his calculating machines. 

Lovelace is now celebrated for identifying the machines' potential to manipulate symbols rather than just numbers, foreshadowing modern computing a century in advance.

Education:

"In the early nineteenth century there were no 'professional' scientists (indeed, the word 'scientist' was only coined by William Whewell in 1836), but the participation of noble women in intellectual pursuits was not widely encouraged." 

And what about in the 21st century? Here we are! The reason why Ada Lovelace Day is important.

How much tech progress has there been in tech companies themselves since Ada Lovelace Day began in 2009?

Ada Lovelace is a wonderful example to our students young girls. Lovelace keeps motivating young girls to pursuit STEM studies. 

The day must be inspirational for girls to study STEM. Promoting the work of women in science and encouraging girls to enter the sciences is important for achieving the Global Goals for Sustainable Development.

So, the gap of girls and young women in science and techonology in the 21st century is still a big problem. We must  motivate the young girls to pursuit Science studies.

Some thoughts:

I wrote about Ada Lovelace on my blog to students, a blog to encourage my students to learn online using the technologies.

Girls and women are more and more proving in different situations at school and in business that they are equal to men in the intelligence and capacity.

This begins early in school where girls must be encouraged to access to science and technolyogy.

The aim is to encourage creativity in the field of science and new technologies and highlight the importance of developing innovative skills at an early age.

Sometimes, "women leave tech for a variety of reasons, such as not seeing opportunities for advancement, hostile male culture, feelings of isolation – it’s not that they want to leave to have a family, as is often assumed."

However, we must not give from encourage our students to achieve their goals in STEM.

Michel Tournier, l'auteur de Vendredi ou la Vie Sauvage, prix Goncourt 1970, est mort le 19 janvier 2016. Ces oeuvres, étudiés dans les écoles, ont aussitôt été considérés comme des sortes de classiques contemporains.

Adapté du roman de Michel Tournier Vendredi ou les Limbes du Pacifique, Vendredi ou la Vie sauvage (1981) est une série en trois parties réalisée pour la télévision par Gérard Vergez (Teresa, Les Cavaliers de l'orage et Bras de fer).

Ce projet requérant des moyens financiers, techniques et logistiques importants, il fut décidé de le tourner simultanément en français et en anglais, avec un comédien anglais célèbre, Michael York, et un jeune danseur américain, Gene Anthony Ray, qui venait d’être révélé par Fame d’Alan Parker.

De fait de l’internationalisation du projet, le choix du compositeur de la musique s’est porté sur Maurice Jarre dont la renommée était mondiale, depuis qu’il avait signé les partitions de deux films de David Lean : Lawrence d’Arabie (1962) et Le Docteur Jivago (1965).

Composée entre le célèbre téléfilm Shogun (avec Richard Chamberlain et Toshirô Mifune) et Le Lion du désert (la superproduction de Moustapha Akkad), la musique de Vendredi ou la Vie sauvage correspond à une période où Maurice Jarre accumula les projets à la télévision tout en gardant sa richesse mélodique qui l'a rendu célèbre au cinéma.

Les nombreux thèmes composés pour la série évoquent parfaitement la vie sauvage sur l'île, la beauté et la sérénité de la relation ambigüe entre Robinson et Vendredi. La musique est avant tout symphonique et alterne moments poétiques (utilisation des ondes Martenot et d'instruments solistes comme la harpe, le haut-bois...) et moments épiques (motifs percussifs sourds dans la plus grande tradition du compositeur).

Music Box Records propose une version plus complète que celle précédemment éditée en 33 tours en 1987 avec plus d'une heure de musique incluant la chanson du générique interprétée par Alexandra Brown.

"Le navire sur lequel Robinson est embarqué fait naufrage au large des côtes chiliennes. Seul rescapé de la catastrophe, abandonné sur une île déserte et inconnue, Robinson mesure très vite les dangers de la solitude.

Victime de sa propre déshumanisation, il prend peur et se met donc à travailler. Il défriche, laboure et ensemence la terre dont il veut tirer profit. Tout en préservant Robinson d'une existence instinctive et primitive, le travail contribue à la domestication de l'île. Transformée, gérée suivant les principes de la civilisation, la nature devient moins hostile et plus accueillante. Cependant, la rencontre avec Vendredi bouleverse l'ordre établi.

Le sauvage, tout d'abord soumis en apparence aux lois édictées, finit par détruire cette forme ennuyeuse de civilisation. Une conception nouvelle de la vie s'élabore alors, plus joyeuse et plus saine, dans une sorte de communion avec la nature dont Robinson saura désormais tirer véritablement parti."

Today, 7 October we celebrate the National National Day of the Castle. Portugal, my country  has beautiful castles along the 800 centuries of its History.

The National Day of the Castle is celebrated every year on the 7th October. Dozens of castles, country estate and ruins open their doors to the general public. In and around these centuries-old castles many activities for young students are organized. The Day of the Castle brings history to life.

World Teachers' Day : Valuing and Improving their Status

"It Takes a Teacher  to prepare the students for the world."

World Teachers' Day is celebrated since 5 October 1994. UNESCO joint signing of the UNESCO/ International Labour Organisation (ILO) recommendation concerning the status of teachers. This recommendation is morally binding for all countries.

However, local events may be on some other date close to October 5, so that they do not fall during fall (northern hemisphere) or spring (southern hemisphere) school vacations. 

This year World Teachers’ Day marks the 50th anniversary of the adoption of the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers. It is the first world Teachers’ Day (WTD) to be celebrated within the new Global Education 2030 Agenda adopted by the world community one year ago.

This year’s theme : “Valuing Teachers, Improving their Status”.

This theme embodies the fundamental principles of the fifty-year-old Recommendation while shining a light on the need to support teachers as reflected in the agenda’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

A specific education goal, SDG4, pledges to “Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all”.

Teachers are not only pivotal to the right to education they are key to achieving the targets set out in SDG4.

The roadmap for the new agenda, the Education 2030 Framework for Action, highlights the fact:

Teachers are fundamental for equitable and quality education and, as such, must be “adequately trained, recruited and remunerated, motivated and supported within well-resourced, efficient and effectively governed systems”.

However, in order to achieve this goal, it is necessary not only to substantially increase the supply of qualified teachers but to motivate them by valuing their work.

By 2030, 3.2 million more teachers will be required to achieve universal primary education and 5.1 million more in order to achieve universal lower secondary education.

To mark World Teachers’ Day, the UNESCO Institute for Statistics (UIS) has released the first-ever estimates of how many teachers are needed to achieve the global goal for education by 2030.

In the next 14 years, countries must recruit almost 69 million teachers to provide every child with primary and secondary education: 24.4 million primary school teachers and 44.4 million secondary school teachers.

Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4) demands inclusive and equitable quality education for all by 2030. The needs are urgent, with an estimated 263 million children and youth still out of primary and secondary school globally, according to a new UIS paper. SDG 4 includes a specific call for more qualified teachers and more support from the international community for teacher training in developing countries.

"It takes a Teacher to empower students with skills of the futur"

Teachers are too often undervalued and under-empowered. But if we  love to be a teacher, the most important are our students.

To engage their students, teachers create, collaborate, communicate and think critically. And they empower their students to do the same. 

I was a teacher for 30 years in different schools. I teached face-to-face and online. I was one of the first teachers to include the new technologies and social networks into my curricula. Students loved and learned better. It was their world. 

The first students I taught are now doctors, lawyers, engineers, journalists, even teachers. Others quited higher education and followed further education and they are excellent professionals on their work.

It is such a mixed feeling of pride and joy to think of my students as young adults. The children that I helped to educate. I remember every new school year, the new students, their fears and joy. I motivated so many children and adolescents. I changed lives. 

I was excited every year and prayed to be the best teacher for all of them, to be able to satisfy the needs and expectations of every student, no matter their capacities.

I'm happy of my career as a teacher. For more than 30 years I had new groups of students. They were from different backgrounds, cultures, and had different experiences to share with me and their classmates.

Today, I'm still teaching online. And I write on my blog to share some experiences and educational resources with teachers of all over the world. And thera a lot od teachers who are usual readers for years.
