Earth Day is coming next 22 April. It's celebrated each year to remind each of us that the Earth and its ecosystems provide us with life and sustenance.

It began on April 22, 1970 – millions took to the streets to protest the negative effects of 150 years of industrialisation. In 2020 Earth Day will celebrate 50 years. Wow!

The Earth Day Network calls it "the anniversary of the birth of the modern environmental movement." True!

Nature’s gifts to our planet are the millions of species that we know and love, and many more that remain to be discovered. Unfortunately, human beings have irrevocably upset the balance of nature and, as a result, the world is facing the greatest rate of extinction since we lost the dinosaurs more than 60 million years ago. But unlike the fate of the dinosaurs, the rapid extinction of species in our world today is the result of human activity.

All living things have an intrinsic value, and each plays a unique role in the complex web of life. 

We must work together to protect endangered and threatened species: bees, coral reefs, elephants, giraffes, insects, whales and more.

Recognizing that Mother Earth is a common expression for the planet earth in a number of countries and regions, which reflects the interdependence that exists among human beings, other living species and the planet we all inhabit.

Noting that Earth Day is observed each year in many countries, the UN decide to designate 22 April as International Mother Earth Day.

For Earth Day 2019, NASA invites students to celebrate the planet we call home with #PictureEarth social media event.

NASA studies Earth as a mission to let us know what’s happening to our home. Satellites and instruments #PictureEarth daily. 

Some take visible light photos, much like your camera. Others peer into the infrared, microwave and radio spectrums, which our human eyes can’t see. 

These images of Earth can be the width of an instrument’s path over the ground, a column of molecules in the air, the height of the ocean below, or even made up of signals emitted quietly from the surface.

Each satellite picture reveals a small detail of the land, water, atmosphere and life on Earth — a single brushstroke in the masterpiece that is our home planet.

Education:

Unfortunately, European schools are closed for Easter Season. But teachers could contact their students using schools media accounts to invite them to participate on this activity.

They love media, Instagram, Twitter, Facebook. They will participate, I'm sure!

At 26, she followed her passion for animals and Africa to Gombe, Tanzania, where she began her landmark study of chimpanzees in the wild by immersing herself in their habitat as a neighbor, rather than a distant observer. 

Her discovery in 1960 that chimpanzees make and use tools rocked the scientific world and redefined the relationship between humans and the rest of the animal kingdom.

She theorised that humans aren’t the only species who have individual personalities, a very unconventional way of thinking at the time.

She observed “human” behaviours including hugs, kisses and pats on the back in chimps, as well as emotions including joy and sorrow.

As a UN Messenger of Peace, Dame Commander of the British Empire, and Founder of the Jane Goodall Institute, Dr. Goodall travels the world nearly 300 days a year, speaking about the threats facing chimpanzees, environmental crises, and her reasons for hope.

The animal behaviour expert, conservationist, activist and all-round animal lover has partnered with Google for its annual Earth Day Doodle.

From poisoning and injuring marine life to disrupting human hormones, from littering our beaches and landscapes to clogging our waste streams and landfills, the exponential growth of plastics is now threatening the survival of our planet.

In response, Earth Day 2018 will focus on fundamentally changing human attitude and behavior about plastics and catalyzing a significant reduction in plastic pollution. 

Earth Day strategy to End Plastic Pollution will: 

• Lead and support the adoption of a global framework to regulate plastic pollution

• Educate and mobilize citizens across the globe to demand action from governments and corporations to control and diminish plastic pollution

International Earth Day is celebrated to remind each of us that the Earth and its ecosystems provide us with life and sustenance.

It also recognizes a collective responsibility, as called for in the 1992 Rio Declaration, to promote harmony with nature and the Earth to achieve a just balance among the economic, social and environmental needs of present and future generations of humanity.

International Mother Earth Day provides an opportunity to raise public awareness around the world to the challenges regarding the well-being of the planet and all the life it supports.

Theme: The theme for 2017 is "Environmental & Climate Literacy".

Education is the foundation for progress. We need to build a global citizenry fluent in the concepts of climate change and aware of its unprecedented threat to our planet. We need to empower everyone with the knowledge to inspire action in defense of environmental protection.

Environmental and climate literacy is the engine not only for creating green voters and advancing environmental and climate laws and policies but also for accelerating green technologies and jobs.

To combat things like coral bleaching and pollution, the three eco-rangers are inspired to take action such as eating less meat, carpooling, and unplugging unused electronic devices. That’s some heroic work for tiny animals!

Earth Day 2017’s Campaign is: Environmental & Climate Literacy.

The easy living on Earth won’t stay that way unless we take good care of our planet. And that’s the big reminder of Earth Day, a day dedicated to protecting our environment and keeping our world healthy.

As I've done in the past, I share some thoughts to include Earth Day and environmental education into every school curriculum as a cross-curricular.

NASA invites us to learn about our global environment by "adopting" a small part of our home planet. 

Participants will receive a personalized adoption certificate for their unique, numbered piece of Earth (approximately 55 miles wide) to print and share on social media. 

The certificate features NASA Earth science data collected for that location.

Schools have an important role promoting environmental education as a civic value. So, teachers can teach and share environmental values in different moments of their lessons in cross-curricular.

Yes! Because Earth Day is not about a day! Earth Day is about every day! So, educators must include environmental values in different moments of their lessons, no matter the curriculum, and provide some thoughts and digital resources, educating young people for a sustainable future and inspiring them being a good example.
