Earth Day is celebrated each year to remind each of us that the Earth and its ecosystems provide us with life and sustenance.
It began almost 50 years ago – on April 22, 1970 – millions took to the streets to protest the negative effects of 150 years of industrialisation.

Recognizing that Mother Earth is a common expression for the planet earth in a number of countries and regions, which reflects the interdependence that exists among human beings, other living species and the planet we all inhabit.
Noting that Earth Day is observed each year in many countries, the UN decide to designate 22 April as International Mother Earth Day;

Since 1970, Earth Day has spawned a movement of millions across the globe working towards a sustainable future. This day of solidarity sheds light on ways everyone can contribute to a better planet.
International Mother Earth Day provides an opportunity to raise public awareness around the world to the challenges regarding the well-being of the planet and all the life it supports.

Today’s annual Earth Day Doodle was created in partnership with one of the planet’s most influential advocates: Ethologist (animal behavior expert), conservationist, activist, and animal-lover Dr. Jane Goodall, who has dedicated her life to studying and protecting our environment.

Dr Goodall, 84, is best known for her study of chimpanzee social and family life in Tanzania in the 1960s.

At 26, she followed her passion for animals and Africa to Gombe, Tanzania, where she began her landmark study of chimpanzees in the wild by immersing herself in their habitat as a neighbor, rather than a distant observer.
Her discovery in 1960 that chimpanzees make and use tools rocked the scientific world and redefined the relationship between humans and the rest of the animal kingdom.
Jane Goodall
She theorised that humans aren’t the only species who have individual personalities, a very unconventional way of thinking at the time.
She observed “human” behaviours including hugs, kisses and pats on the back in chimps, as well as emotions including joy and sorrow.
As a UN Messenger of Peace, Dame Commander of the British Empire, and Founder of the Jane Goodall Institute, Dr. Goodall travels the world nearly 300 days a year, speaking about the threats facing chimpanzees, environmental crises, and her reasons for hope.
The animal behaviour expert, conservationist, activist and all-round animal lover has partnered with Google for its annual Earth Day Doodle.

From poisoning and injuring marine life to disrupting human hormones, from littering our beaches and landscapes to clogging our waste streams and landfills, the exponential growth of plastics is now threatening the survival of our planet.
In response, Earth Day 2018 will focus on fundamentally changing human attitude and behavior about plastics and catalyzing a significant reduction in plastic pollution.
Earth Day strategy to End Plastic Pollution will:
- Lead and support the adoption of a global framework to regulate plastic pollution
- Educate and mobilize citizens across the globe to demand action from governments and corporations to control and diminish plastic pollution
- Inform and activate citizens to take personal responsibility for the plastic pollution that each one of us generates by choosing to reject, reduce, reuse and recycle plastics
- Work with universities, school teachers and students to End Plastic Pollution

Plastic objects that we use once and discard, or single-use plastics, are a growing critical problem of global proportion. That’s why Earth Day 2018, is focused on Ending Plastic Pollution by Earth Day 2020, the 50th anniversary of Earth Day.
