World Teachers' Day was inaugurated on 5 October 1994 by the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) to commemorate the 1966 joint signing of the UNESCO/ International Labour Organisation (ILO) recommendation concerning the status of teachers. This recommendation is morally binding for all countries.

However, local events may be on some other date close to October 5, so that they do not fall during fall (northern hemisphere) or spring (southern hemisphere) school vacations. In 2002, Canada Post issued a postage stamp to commemorate World Teachers' Day.

Celebrated in over 100 countries, World Teachers' Day acknowledges the efforts of teachers in an increasingly complex, multicultural and technological society. It is a day on which students, parents and community members can demonstrate their appreciation for the contributions that teachers have made to their community.

2014 is the 20th anniversary of World Teachers’ Day.  This year on 5 October, we celebrate the 20th anniversary of World Teachers’ Day. 

Today is my day ! It's our day ! There is no better day to celebrate the work of teachers than World Teachers’ Day. I hope you feel happy to be a teacher as I feel.

Unesco organise celebration on Sunday 5 October is held annually to celebrate the good work that educators do around the world, many working in difficult conditions and with limited resources.

Teachers are an investment for the future of countries. What today’s children will face in adult life cannot be predicted and so the teachers of today and tomorrow need the skills, knowledge and support that will enable them to meet the diverse learning needs of every girl and boy.

In many countries, the quality of education is undermined by a deficit of teachers. 1.4 million teachers are missing in classrooms – and they are needed to achieve universal primary education (UPE) by 2015, according to the UNESCO Institute for Statistics.

Added to the challenge of numbers is one of quality: all too often, teachers work without resources or proper training. The stakes are high, because we face today a global learning crisis, with 250 million children not acquiring basic skills of reading and writing.

As countries accelerate towards 2015 and the new developement agenda is shaped, it is essential that teachers remain a priority.

Listening Sir Ken Robinson, one of today's most prominent voices and experts in education, I felt grateful when he asks people to recognize how the profession of a teacher is. 'Teaching is as art' he says.Indeed, it is.

I have been a teacher for the past 30 years, the students I once taught are now in college, others have their own children. It is such a mixed feeling of pride and joy to think of our students grown up.

We all talk about how students feel about the beginning of the school year, but what do teachers think?

We are excited to see our new students, to decorate the classrooms, to begin a new year on a positive note. And we are ervous and pray that we do our best as teachers. Will we be able to satisfy the needs of all of our students?

Every year we have new group of students who have different needs. They come from different backgrounds, cultures, and have different experiences. 

Sometimes the things we have prepared will not work for a certain group. So we rethink our lessons, and practice and we start again. We evolve as human beings and teachers. We are reborn as everyday brings new successes and challenges.

And we are so lucky. There are so many awesome resources to ease and enrich the lives of innovative educators and their students that facilitate effective teaching and learning.

So here is a toast to my fellow teachers - let's celebrate this Teachers' Day with a new set of eyes and a fresh outlook, a heart that is ready to smile and a willingness to participate and in the growth of our students.

World Teachers' Day : what about support and training?

October 5! Today is Teachers' Day! And the day of all teachers in the world! I hope you feel happy to be a teacher as I was all along my career and still am.

This year the theme is "A call for Teachers" !

"A Call for Teachers!” is the slogan of World Teachers’ Day 2013 (5 Octobour Organization (ILO), UNDP, UNICEF and Education International (EI).  er), which UNESCO is celebrating along with its partners, the International Lab

Teachers are the most powerful force for equity, access and quality education, a call for teachers means calling for quality education for all. Agree! 

Quality education offers hope and the promise of a better standard of living. There is no stronger foundation for lasting peace and sustainable development than a quality education provided by well trained, valued, supported and motivated teachers.

Why a call for teachers?

"There is a huge shortage of professional, well-trained and well-supported teachers to achieve better quality education. The challenge of recruiting teachers does not lie just in the numbers, but in the provision of quality teachers. Far too often teachers remain under-qualified, poorly paid and with low status."

On World Teachers' Day, the ILO salutes teachers and commits to supporting their key role in building the citizens and societies of the future, says Guy Ryder, the ILO's Director-General.

That's right! A quality education needs competent teachers and most of all motivated teachers. Without motivation, teachers can not be competent teachers and can not motivate students to learn. 

At the final discussion at the Great Lx International Conference, I heard some teachers saying that they have no motivation to teach or to enhance learning by introducing new skills an competences or technology in their courses.

I was so sad to hear that as a teacher! Teachers without a motivation generate indifferent and unmotivated students.

I can understand that crisis in European countries is not good. 'Developed' countries are facing great problems in Education system and in society. 

However teachers are among the many factors that keep children in school and influence learning and a better future. They support and help students to think critically about the new challenges, to process information from several sources, work cooperatively, tackle problems and make informed choices.

"In a globalized world, education cannot be limited to reading, writing and numeracy skills alone. It must also seek to nurture non-cognitive skills such – ie. empathy, interpersonal communication, self-confidence, curiosity - that are conducive to international understanding and solidarity."

Teachers prepare the new generations for a new world. They must be encouraged to take up this very noble profession.

Quality education depends on quality teachers and requires adequate acces training and continuous develop professionalism.

Teachers need appreciating, assessing, and improving their own levels of delivery. The competence of their workforce, too, is strongly connected to their motivation.

Teachers need support for their role in guiding children and young people to build a sustainable future to all.

Future generations are the key to any nation's success and development solutions.
