"Are we alone in the universe?" - Throughout history, humans have wondered...

Wow ! Look at this astonishing image ! A new era in astronomy has begun.  The world gets its first look at the full capabilities of the NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope. The telescope’s first full-colour images and spectroscopic data, uncover a spectacular collection of cosmic features that have remained elusive until now, were released on this day, 12 July 2022.

Today’s Doodle,  12 July 2022, celebrates the deepest infrared photo of the universe ever taken by NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope, also known as the JWST or Webb, a scientific phenomenon and one of the biggest engineering feats of humanity. 

"NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope has delivered the deepest and sharpest infrared image of the distant universe so far. Webb’s First Deep Field is galaxy cluster SMACS 0723, and it is teeming with thousands of galaxies – including the faintest objects ever observed in the infrared."

The Doodle features the deepest infrared photo of the universe ever taken as well as other initial images from the JWST. Explore them below!

It's the largest, most powerful, and most complex infrared telescope to ever be put into space, and the largest international space endeavor in history! 

Today, six months since take off, NASA released Webb’s first operational images unveiling new depths and worlds. The NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope has delivered the deepest, sharpest infrared image of the distant Universe so far.







This image shows the galaxy cluster SMACS 0723 as it appeared 4.6 billion years ago, with many more galaxies in front of and behind the cluster. Much more about this cluster will be revealed as researchers begin digging into Webb’s data. This field was also imaged by Webb’s Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI), which observes mid-infrared light.

James E. Webb is the NASA’s second administrator. James E. Webb, who led the Apollo missions that landed the first humans on the moon

James E. Webb was the second administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, formally established on October 1, 1958 under the National Aeronautics and Space Act. Webb is widely known for his effective leadership during the beginning of the American space program, and particularly for his foresite in commanding the agency to keep scientific objectives as a primary concern. Under his direction NASA undertook one of the most impressive series of projects in human history with the goal of landing an American on the Moon through the execution of Project Apollo.

By the time Webb retired just a few months before the first moon landing in July 1969, NASA had launched more than 75 space science missions to study the stars and galaxies, our own Sun and the as-yet unknown environment of space above the Earth's atmosphere. Missions such as the Orbiting Solar Observatory and the Explorer series of astronomical satellites built the foundation for the most successful period of astronomical discovery in history, which continues today.

Many believe that James E. Webb, who ran the fledgling space agency from February 1961 to October 1968, did more for science than perhaps any other government official and that it is only fitting that the Next Generation Space Telescope would be named after him.

The telescope was launched from the Guiana Space Center in Kourou, French Guiana on December 25, 2021 and took a month to reach its orbit at 1.5 million kilometers (940,000 miles) from Earth. The launch was made possible through the collaboration between NASA, the European Space Agency (ESA) and the Canadian Space Agency (CSA).

Webb’s NIRCam has brought distant galaxies into sharp focus – they have tiny, faint structures that have never been seen before, including star clusters and diffuse features.

Light from these galaxies took billions of years to reach us. We are looking back in time to within a billion years after the big bang when viewing the youngest galaxies in this field. The light was stretched by the expansion of the universe to infrared wavelengths that Webb was designed to observe. Researchers will soon begin to learn more about the galaxies’ masses, ages, histories, and compositions.

Most of us are excited about this photoTeachers and students will be talking about it into Sciences curriculum at school or distance learning.

Thanks to images from the JWST, astronomers will now have the opportunity to study every phase of cosmic history, which spans a massive 13.5 billion years, and the mysteries beyond our galaxy.

Science lessons will be enhanced with the discussion of this incredible event! Do you want a better topic to discuss into your lesson ? 

Invite students to follow NASA updates via NASA website. After a good explanation and discussion in the classroom, let your students create some interesting tweets to pull a discussion about this awesome event.

Follow their activity on Twitter to verify that they are understanding the importance of the event and promoting a good topics.

Schools : Weather vs. Climate : What's the difference ? A new classroom resource by ESA

New classroom resource What's the difference between climate and weather? In his new set of activities, students will learn the difference.

How? By analysing statements, collecting temperature data & writing a climate report for the year 2050. Wow! Exciting!

Weather or climate?


The concepts of weather and climate are often thought to be the same thing.

In this set of activities, students will learn the difference between weather and climate by:

  • Analysing different statements,

  • Collecting and analysing their own air temperature data,

  • In the end, pupils will write a short climate report for the year 2050

Education

Learning the difference between weather and climate can be tricky at first. One of the key differences has to do with time. Weather involves air conditions that occur over a short time, while climate involves the average patterns of weather over a long period of time.

Éducation : Google Maps : exploitons les planètes !

Le service de cartographie de Google part à la conquête de l'espace depuis le 18 octobre 2017.

Il nous propose d'explorer le système solaire. Il suffit de dézoomer en vue satellite, jusqu'à quitter la Terre.

Le service de cartographie de Google avait annoncé, le 16 octobre, la mise en place d'une nouvelle option permettant de scruter le système solaire.

Il y a vingt ans, le vaisseau spatial Cassini partait de Cap Canaveral pour découvrir les secrets de Saturne et de ses nombreuses lunes. Pendant sa mission, Cassini a enregistré et envoyé près d'un demi-million de photos sur Terre, permettant aux scientifiques de reconstruire ces mondes lointains dans des détails sans précédent. 

On peut maintenant visiter ces lieux, ainsi que de nombreuses autres planètes et lunes, dans Google Maps directement à partir de notre ordinateur. Pour plus de plaisir, Google nous conseille de zoomer de la Terre jusqu'à ce que nous sommes dans l'espace! Wow!

La nouvelle fonctionnalité a été développée à partir des photos de la NASA et de l’ESA, l’Agence spatiale européenne, notamment celles capturées par Cassini-Huygens, la sonde partie explorer Saturne en 1997. 

Selon le blog Googlel’entreprise a aussi eu recours aux talents de l’artiste Björn Jónsson, spécialisé dans les représentations en infographie 3D de l’espace.







Éducation: 

Grâce à Google Maps, les étudiants peuvent voyager dans l'espace sans bouger de leur table en classe. 
A l'aide de Google Maps, ils vont pouvoir explorer virtuellement notre système solaire. Pour les promener dans l’espace via l’appli, il leur suffit de dézoomer en vue satellite jusqu’à ce qu'ils se retrouveront hors de l’orbite terrestre. 
Une fois là haut, les élèves découvriront la terre depuis de l’espace mais aussi les planètes voisines, comme Mars, Vénus, Pluton ou la Lune !

Il y a 16 objets célestes en tout. En zoomant, ils peuvent même obtenir le nom des différents cratères présents à leur surface.
Google Maps leur proposent la liste des 16 mondes dans le menu déroulant à gauche. Ceux ci comprennent Mercure, Mars, Vénus, la Station Spatiale Internationale, la Lune, Cérès, Io, Europe, Ganymède, Mimas, Encelade, Dioné, Rhéa, Titan, Japet et Pluton.

Dans ces endroits hors de portée pour les étudiants/utilisateurs lambda mais accessibles via les services de Google, par exemple, rappelez-leur Thomas Pesquet qui nous a permis de rêvé de voyager dans l’espace et de visiter des mondes inconnus. 

Selon quelques spécialistes certaines planètes manquent à l’appel et le niveau de détail varie selon ce que l’on observe.

L’écrivaine scientifique Emily Lakdawalla a également repéré quelques erreurs de placement. Elle a immédiatement fait remonter à Google.

En tout cas, pas de doute que Google a de bonnes idées et compte, dans les années à venir, améliorer son application

Education: Sciences on Mars

Several missions are exploring Mars since 2004. But a  rock mysteriously “appeared” a few feet in front of the six wheeled rover a few days ago. Scientists scratch heads.

The Opportunity rover which landed on Mars in 2004, hasn't moved in over a month as it waits for better weather on the red planet.


Still, no one knows for sure how it got there. The rover’s been parked at the same spot for weeks as it waits for better weather and a higher sun to help power it along its way. Sticking around the same spot allowed for nearly identical images to be taken on widely-separated Sols. Maybe a closer study of the rock in the coming days will tell us more about how it got there.

JPL scientists did too: "It's about the size of a jelly doughnut. It was a total surprise, we were like 'wait a second, that wasn't there before, it can't be right. Oh my god! It wasn't there before!' We were absolutely startled."

The discovery was revealed by Mars Exploration Rover (MER) lead scientist Steve Squyres in a 10 years of Roving Mars keynote address at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory some days ago. MER scientists immediately named the new rock “Pinnacle Island”.

Scientists have two theories for the moment:
  • The rock "just landed there," ejected from a meteorite impact close to the area. 
  • The rover pushed it with one of the wheels that is now jammed.
The strange case of "Pinnacle Island" happens on the celebration of ten years, on 14 January 2004, Mars Express took its very first images of Mars in colour and in 3D.

To mark the occasion, the team produced a fly-through movie of the ancient flood plain Kasei Valles. The movie is based on the 67-image mosaic released as part of the ten-years-since-launch celebrations in June 2013. Read more here

Oh! Applications open for Alpbach Summer School 2014. This year, the summer school will be held from 15 to 24 July and will focus on the theme “The geophysics of the terrestrial planets". 

Applications should be submitted before 31 March, 2014.
