Steve Jobs : my tribute as a teacher to Mr. Jobs !

Steve Jobs [1955-2011]

As an teacher, I would like to remember Steve Jobs as an innovative mind or a "visionary and creative genius" in the field of educational technology. This is my tribute.

With his creativity, Steve Jobs helped me and you, as teachers and practitioners to bring appealing digital devices and digital resources into school curriculum.

Time
Steve Jobs

He have inspired me to be great and better changing the way I teach, using educative technology.

Teaching and learning with smartphones, iPods and iPads has become  so exciting to students and teachers. School curricula become more captivating to  students and easier to teachers, enhancing digital skills in formal or informal learning.

Mr. Jobs revolutionized completely the concept of education bringing a captivating technology in Education and help teachers igniting the creativity in students. Smartphones, and iPod were on the hands of all students. Why not include those devices into the classroom! So, I did it and my students were very enthusiastic and they really used them for learning.

As an innovative educator since the 90's it was a joy to share my dreams and projects with my students: practicing formal learning and non formal learning.

Later, I include tablets/iPads when they arrived to Portugal. And I wrote How I love iPad2 in the classroom: "So, as a teacher, I can say that iPad will "change the learning landscape"! iPad 2 will change completely the way educators and students will move in the classroom!"

Steve Jobs
I was fascinated about it! Still  am...

In 2009 I explained on my blog post Digital Schools versus Digital Teachers: " I did not grow up with Technology. It grew up with me, and I was there every step of the way. A "digital pioneer" who is doing a enthusiastic job infusing technology meaningfully into teaching and learning."

And Now Alice for the iPad, iPad features & Education?, Some apps for iPad helping education and other posts about iPad or other devices in the classroom.  You will find different posts on technology enhancing education on my blog along the years.

"Every child is born full of creativity. Nurturing it is one of the most important things educators do. Creativity makes your students better communicators and problem solvers. It prepares them to thrive in today’s world — and to shape tomorrow’s."

Teachers as us are always thinking how can we captivating students to a better school performance. So, students understood immediately how the iPad could help their creativity and learning in the classroom. And they did incredible experiences. You have a lot of videos on YouTube about the iPad in Education.

"You’ve got to find what you love. And that is as true for your work as it is for your lovers. Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle".

Steve Jobs, I to live before you die
at Stanford University

So sad! Steve Jobs has passed away. Thank you dear Mr. Jobs for your genius and remarkable strides in all fields, especially in Education.

I would love an iPad 2 in the classroom !

CEO Steve Jobs presenting iPad 2

Here it is! iPad 2, the fabulous device!
Do you remember my 1st post about iPad features and education July 10, 2010? I wrote "we are looking forward to test this amazing creative device to include into school curriculum!"

Now, it's even better! The CEO Steve Jobs himself was there to present iPad 2!

"Apple CEO Steve Jobs declared the end of the PC era today as he unveiled the iPad 2. And he touted the educational benefits of the iPad in his presentation, highlighting in one video the impact that the device has had in particular on autistic children."

Tom Krazit, Giga
So is the iPad 2 ready for the classroom? Let's see...

Steve Jobs presents iPad 2

The iPad 2, unveiled yesterday, addresses even more of the drawbacks of the iPad as an educational device.

Features:

The iPad 2 has two cameras. The addition of GarageBand and iMovie - two very popular pieces of software in the classroom - will enable students to create multimedia projects. Wonderful! They will love it.

Education:

Reading Alice in Wonderland, Jack and the Beanstalk, Aesop's Fables, or Tangled or watching Prince of Persia, La Fontaine fables is like to enter in another dimension. True, right?

But children's books are all about big, splashy pictures, and wild colors elements perfectly suited to iPad screens.

Needless to say, the iPad can do a lot more than just display static pages. It can read stories aloud, it can enrich a classic tale with touch-powered extras, and it can even render pages in 3D (not suitable for children under 6-7 years old).

When students are reading a book, they may to do marks, highlights and notes. The users of iBooks can also read and right PDF directly in the application.

Reading children's literature on a iPad is amazing. Yet even with all the extras, reading is so natural on iPad, the technology seems to disappear.

Many of the limitations that make the device ill-suited for the classroom have already been addressed - through various iOS upgrades and by the explosion of educational apps and e-books. The iPad now has multi-tasking (sort of). Students can print.

They can learn the narrative text, learning foreign languages, playing video games Majin and the Forsaken Kingdom, learning Biology, Geography & Music - Arcade Fire, funny and pedagogical, Art The Google Art Project among other school curricula

Literature, Science, Geography, Sport, Music, Arts, the fundamental curricula using the iPad in the classroom. All  these including media devices into school curricula, plus interesting apps!

iPad 2 in education

And what about searching in real time: news, magazines, Google maps, using social networks (Facebook, Twitter), or working on Google docs). All these features offer teachers and students a delicious motivation push!

"iPad apps are expanding the learning experience both inside and outside the classroom. From interactive lessons to study aids to productivity tools, there’s something for everyone."

Apple in Education

The addition of the HDMI cable will mean that iPad content can be connected to a HDTV (which really isn't the projection device that most teachers have in their classrooms), but... it's a start!

iPad 2 (gallery)

Features: some notes

'It's necessary to hold iPad with both hands. When we write on iPad is a bit boring because finger touches stay on screen and they reflexes', I wrote. Well... not anymore! Like Apple says: 'Less in your hands, more at your fingertips.'

"iPad 2 and iPad Smart Cover are made for each other. Literally. Built-in magnets draw the Smart Cover to iPad for a perfect fit that not only protects, but also wakes up, stands up, and brightens up your iPad. That’s not just smart. It’s genius."

Now students are managing to do more than simply "consume" via the iPad. And whether the iPad is just a shiny, engaging, but expensive novelty, if nothing else, trading in a backpack full of textbooks for a 1.3 lb tablet is a win for students' physical well-being. It's a good reason!

iPad 2 apps

Apple, already has the beneficiary of a lot of good will from teachers, shown today that it's ready to take on the challenges of bringing iPad into the classroom?

The cost of the new iPad is beyond many educators and students reach - oh! God! What a pity! - There are no educational discounts on iTunes.

After this video, and reading during the past year some successful reports of schools piloted iPad programs, teachers are prepared to help students managing to do a lot via the iPad.

So, as an educator, I can say that iPad will "change the learning landscape"! iPad 2 will change completely the way educators an students will move in the classroom.

A new and exciting media world to include in Education! No more backpack full of texts books! Not completely... books are always a good resource but we can use both, right?

With iPad 2 new features and apps, young people will love to have an iPad 2 on their table in the classroom ! For sure!

Me too! I would love to have an iPad on my work table!
