Well, as you know artificial intelligence was the topic of 2024 and lot of students began to use it before schools. Teachers needed to think how schools would to adapt and prepare students for a future filled with all kinds of capable A.I. tools

My usual readers remember that I introduced the theme on my publication Education: Best of 2023 : semester Education: Best of 2023 : semester 1.

ChatGPT, the buzzy chatbot developed by OpenAI is capable of writing essays, solving science and math problems and producing working computer code. Impossible to bam it from schools

But there are legitimate questions about the ethics of A.I.-generated writing, and concerns about whether the answers ChatGPT gives are accurate. (Often, they’re not.)

And teachers feel that they have enough to worry about, without adding A.I.-generated homework to the mix.

However they understood that ChatGPT in the classroom, with the right approach, it could be an effective teaching tool.

Well, if you haven't take a decision why not read The Pros and Cons of Chat GPT for Students (May 2024) ? Or 3 ChatGPT Prompts for Extending Learning with Successful Students (August 2023). They could be very useful to you.

Looking back 2023 I've come up with a roundup of what's been the best posts of my blog The Digital Teacher G-Souto

Below you’ll find the top posts of 2nd semester 2023 containing different themes: science, human rights, French literature, children's literature, languages, science-fiction, environment, elimination of violence against women and girls, traditions and other themes.

As my usual readers know my posts can be written in English, French and Portuguese (my mother language).

The selection is based on page views but also based on pedagogical relevance of the most-read posts.

I kept the order of the most viewed, and eliminated the posts that seemed less relevant. The main reason? Sometimes some posts acquire too much visibility, not for their value but for the keywords that the search engines "like" indexing.

Here are the most popular posts 2nd semester 2023:

World Teacher's Day 2023

My special choice of the #2nd semester 2023 ? Teacher's Day ! The teachers we need for the education we want !

"The teachers we need for the education we want: The global imperative to reverse the teacher shortage".

World Teachers’ Day theme

The 2023 celebrations aimed to put the importance of stopping the decline in the number of teachers and would star to increase that number.

Through various activities, all the countries would advocate for a dignified and valued teaching profession, analysing their challenges, and showcase inspiring practices to attract, retain and motivate teachers and educators.

Without teachers, there is not education. Being a teacher provides a unique opportunity to make a transformative impact on the lives of students, and contribute to shaping sustainable futures.

In different European countries. these last two years, there was a big lack of teachers.

Hoping to have inspire you, as my readers and teachers in your lessons all over the last year.

Education & Art : Culture matters ! Let's go to Museums !

International Museum Day

https://icom.museum/

As we already know, International Museum Day is organised on 18 May each year or around this date.

The events and activities planned to celebrate International Museum Day can last a day, a weekend or an entire week

IMD was celebrated for the first time 40 years ago. All around the world, more and more museums participate in International Museum Day. Last year, more than 37,000 museums participated in the event in about 158 countries and territories.

  • Theme 2024:

"Museums for Education and Research".

This year's theme, "Museums for Education and Research", underscore the pivotal role of cultural institutions in providing a holistic educational experience.

Museums are vital venues for cultural exchange and enrichment, as well as for the development of peaceful coexistence and cooperation among nations and communities.

This day or entire weekend or week encourages people and students to visit museums dedicated to many fields of human endeavor such as agriculture, fashion, astronomy, archaeology, art, and natural history.

The day also draw attention to traditional educational activities that are hosted by museums, such as school visits, guided tours and workshops.

Together, let us embark on a journey to museums and learn about our historic past.

  • Education:

For IMD 2024 ICOM invite people, teachers, parents, students, universities and schools to rethink education and imagine a future where knowledge sharing transcends barriers, where innovation unites with tradition.

Museums preserve heritage for future generations, promote cultural learning, provide equal access to culture and spread the values on which humanity is based.

Their function in terms of social inclusion is also vital to help keep societies together, and they play a major role in the creative and civics education.

The authors also draw attention to traditional educational activities that are hosted by museums, such as school visits, guided tours and workshops.

Don't forget as well virtual guided tours that some museums offer to teachers and students because many museums worldwide are forced to close their doors.

Young people are visiting more and more the museums. Teachers could be good guides to help young people to enjoy Museums live or virtual visits.

Teachers have an entire weekend to talk about art and culture visiting museums live or virtual and celebrating museums at school.

Check out some pedagogical ideas of mine to explore and support activities at a museum and/or at school with your students:

  • Visit a museum with your students. Please read Uma Aula no Museu  (Portuguese language) an interesting pedagogical project developing creative writing and artistic skills through Portuguese painter Paula Rego: cross-curricular project Languages, Arts, History, Music, IT;
  • Include Museum events into your school curriculum. Invite your students to a school visit a museum;
  • Ask every student to choose a painting or sculpture, some chef-d'oeuvre from the the different views at the a museum to get inspiration to write creative stories and drawing some interesting works;

Civics Education in Schools : Europe Day #AnyoneCanEuropeDay : Resources & Activities !

On the 9th of Ma, many Europeans joined in celebrating Europe Day. It marks the anniversary of the historic Schuman Declaration in 1950, in which he laid out his idea for a new form of political cooperation in Europe.

As in previous years, the European Cultural Foundation hosts a celebration and offers a central hub for information about Europe Day celebrations that will be held from 5 – 12 May 2024 across Europe.

We are all citizens of Europe, regardless of our cultural backgrounds, orientations or convictions. Europe is where we share our lives, build experiences and imagine our futures.

Through cultural events, public debates, and exhibitions, Europeans learn about the history and shared values across Europe and can converse about its future.

The EU's Europe Day is not the only Europe Day !  Check here to find a Europe Day near you.

Together, these events help grow a stronger, more inclusive, more democratic, and more culturally aware European community with a shared commitment to our future and that of generations to come. For anyone can Europe Day!

"Visit the European Institutions as we mark the historic presentation of the Schuman Declaration on 9 May 1950. This pivotal moment was the beginning of European integration and cooperation for peace and unity."

  • European elections:

This year EU Open Day in Brussels was held on Saturday 4th May. With the European Elections (6-9 June) around the corner, join a vibrant array of events and activities held in Brussels, Luxembourg, Strasbourg, and across the EU Member States.

Use this opportunity to better understand how the European Union shapes our daily life and how you can contribute to it.

Education:

"In an increasingly complex, unstable and inter-connected world, the European Union deals with global challenges that no EU country can tackle successfully on its own."

Democracy is a precious gift passed on to us from previous generations. They aspired towards it and fought for it. We should never take democracy for granted. It is up to us to maintain it, to make it stronger and pass it on to the generations to come.

If you live  and teach in a Secondary school,  in a European country from the European Union, it's important to talk about the importance of young people voting at European elections, because your students are European citizens who can vote very soon. Perhaps one or two of your students are already 18 years-old.

Young people, despite representing a significant part of the population, often does not feel the need to actively participate in the democratic process, especially when it comes to the European elections

It is arguable that this kind of apathy is fueled by the lack of adequate civics education in schools. Without a solid understanding of the role of the European Union in everyday life and the consequences of decisions taken at European level, young people can easily feel alienated and disinterested in the electoral process.

This is your role as a teacher. Civics Education into your school curricula is very important!

Resources & Activities : Why vote is important

  • Invite your students to watch the video here. Talk about European history before Schumann Declaration 1950, while listening to the testimonies of the elders. After that, listen the students about the messages they passed on to their grandchildren.

  • Ask the students to enter on the page above and explore with them all the items by reading and discussing each item if the students have doubts.

  • Prepare yourself without demonstrate your voting inclination - a teacher must be neutral and exempt - don't forget!

  • You are in the class to talk about  why citizens must voting, when they will have the age to do it, and the importance of voting. Not to tell them who to vote for.

  • You must not let them know which it is you political idea.
