Sunday time!

Peter Murphy at Casa da Musica| Porto (Portugal)

Peter Murphy performed at Casa da Música in November 2009! It was a fantastic concert! Sala Guilhermina Suggia completely filled.

Included in the European Secret Covers Tour Peter Murphy enchanted all his fans who completely surrended, applauded Murphy and his group who performed new tunes like Velocity 0r Secret Silk Society, and old songs like I'll Fall With Your Knife or Time Has Got Nothing to Do with It among others.

Peter Murphy: Ninth

Now Peter Murphy has a new album "Ninth". Last October 1, Murphy perfomed it at Hard Club (Porto, Portugal) where he started his European Tour.

Here one of my favorites "I Spit Roses"

"Peter Murphy is an art-school educated rock'n'roll frontman and lyricist of the highest order. His voice is unmistakable and he's wiritten songs that transcend genre or time-period."

Justin Warfield  from She Wants Revenge

Education:

Another good musician to talk about in you Music class with your students. Display some videos and share your thoughts with students. May be one or two know well Peter Murphy!

Schools : Amy Winehouse, a lonely girl in a huge but brief success career

credits : Amy Winehouse

Amy Winehouse, the British pop soul singer is dead on the 23 July 2011. How said! It was almost inevitable.

The new didn't surprised the music world, Amy Winehouse, singer and songwriter could not win the battle against alcohol and drugs that increasingly overshadowed her talent.

"With her distinctive hairdo, lashings of eye make-up and garish tattoos, Winehouse rocketed to fame that she could not control."

I wrote Amy Winehouse is back in January, 15 2011:

"Amy Winehouse is back! This wonderful singer and composer of soul, jazz and R&B is finally back after almost 5 years of crossing hell! Her tour in Brazil has been successful. Amy is finally back!

She has an incredible talent! She has such a gorgeous voice! She is complex, unique, superb! Hope she's finally back!"

She didn't! Amy Winehouse is dead of accidental alcohol poising at age 27! She will live in her songs! Two albums 'Frank' (2003) and 'Back to Black' (2006), five Grammy Awards in 2008.

Education:

Alcohol and drugs are a sad reality in our days. Sometimes they are among some of our students at school.

Amy's life could be an important alert to discuss the theme in one or two lessons. Include this theme into your school curriculum.

Begin with an open discussion. Let your students to speak free. If they don't know Amy because she's dead some years ago. 12 years yesterday, July 23.

There is the documentary Amy, Oscar winner 2016 based on true facts and documents. Her life was not easy. As Michael Jackson, she began to sing at a very young age. A father who explored her talent and a passive mother who didn't protect her.

When the Amy Winehouse documentary came out in 2016 on theaters. At the end of the film, Amy's fans were with tears in their eyes. We could not left our chairs immediately. Her voice and images were so present in our memory.

Director Asif Kapadia took on the story of her life for the documentary Amy, and told in her own words along with previously unseen archive footage and interviews to tell the London performer's tragic story in her own words.

Prepare a road note to your students before displaying the documentary or watching on the internet or on streaming.

You can watch on HBOA powerful and moving documentary on the short but electrifying life of British singer-songwriter Amy Winehouse

"An extraordinary, powerful work"

IndieWire

From director Asif Kapadia, featuring archival footage of the singer herself, plus interviews with Lauren Gilbert, Mitchell Winehouse, Janis Winehouse, Raye Cosbert, Tyler James, Pete Doherty, Tony Bennett, and more.

At the end, try to evaluate with a simple dialogue if they could understand how sad is to die so young this way. And tell them the danger of drugs and alcohol with some true examples on young people.

*Note: Pay attention to the age of your students and level you are teaching.

Ya, I know, it's difficult to survive to some students. Often they have a disturbed family, sometimes a father like Amy's father or a weak mother.

I taught at some schools where the most part of the students had difficult lives caused by their parents vices.

Important message:

Try to open students eyes and show them how important it is to make the good choices for a better life and future.

Talking with their parents, students will show their parents how important it's attentive support.

I'm sure they will appreciate this life lesson!

A talented songwriter, an amazing voice, but to young to begin a singer career without a good family support.

On the way, she destroyed herself and could not resist to such brutality. The tabloids, the success, the sad love affair and the loneliness.

To me, she will be always 'unique' on her voice and talent! She was an unhappy and lonely young girl. Perhaps to vulnerable and fragile to face such a success.

"Life's short. Anything could happen, and it usually does"

Amy Winehouse

Happy New Year 2011

The future is robotic
Photograph: Blutgruppe/zefa/Corbis

"The robots are coming. The second decade of the 21st century will see the rise of a mechanised army that will revolutionise private and public life just as radically as the internet and social media have shaken up the past 10 years."

Marina Gorbis, futurologist and head of Californian thinktank The Institute for the Future.

The innovation is in our life everyday! And that is splendid! Innovation and creativity are in music too! Perhaps the most innovative art crossing the centuries. From classical, to pop-rock, jazz, alternative or electronic. There are wonderful composers, musicians, innovative projects.

Now we have music using the latest Techonologies! Arcade Fire and Google maps, Gorillaz composing on iPad. So, we can say, dawn of the age of the Tech music!

"Music is the poetry of the air", said Jean Paul Richter. Read some music quotes and choose the perfect one to begin the New Year!

Did you find an inspirational music quote to add to the soundtrack of your life?

"My idea is that there is music in the air, music all around us; the world is full of it, and you simply take as much as you require."

Edward Elgar

My idea? Just follow the music of your heart! Enjoy it!

Happy New Year 2011!!

Schools : John Lennon... imagine a better world : resources

Tribute to John Lennon

"Love and Peace are eternal."

John Lennon

I believe so! December 8, 1980 marks 30 years since John Lennon was slain outside his New York apartment. The former Beatle had been shot four times in the back by Mark David Chapman, to whom Lennon had given an autograph at the same spot outside his Central Park West apartment earlier that evening.

After his dead, he became the most important icon of music and peace activist.

Last October 9, Google celebrated John Lennon with a special interactive doodle to commemorate, in a poetic way, what would have been his 70th birthdayremember?

Different  memorials and monuments raised in tribute of Lennon all around the world. Strawberry Fields Memorial, in Central Park, New York, the most visited, a statue in Cuba, light tours in Island and, last October, this monument at his home town, Liverpool.

Nowhere Boy
Sam Taylor-Johnson, 2009

Education:

Nowhere Boy is a biopic about John Lennon's adolescence, the creation of his first band, The Quarrymen, and its evolution into The Beatles

The film received its US release on October 8, 2010, coinciding with that weekend's celebrations of the 70th anniversary of Lennon (October 9, 1940).

The drama tells the story of Lennon's teenage years, 15-17 years old, and the start of his journey to becoming a successful musician. The movie also examines the impact on his early life and personality of the two dominant females in his childhood – his Aunt Mimi (Kristin Scott Thomas) and his mother, Julia.

The film was the directorial debut of conceptual artist/photographer Sam Taylor-WoodNowhere Boy was nominated for four British Academy Film Awards.

"Inspired... captures Lennon's essence to perfection", so why not include the biopic into your school lesson?

A wonderful digital resource to include subjects as social inclusion and music into your lessons.

Activities:

Of course you can propose interesting activities in the classroom, in a cross-curricular project to discuss:
  • Peace, music, poetry, youth, dreams.
So many good ideas and values that you can share and discuss with your students!

Curricula: Languages; Music, Arts, Design.

Let your students surprise you! Do they know the Beatles? Of course they do!

The influences of this awesome music group on the musical world and people is unforgettable and incalculable.

Smartphones and tablets are allowed in the classroom! To discover and listen Beatles and John Lennon of course. Students will love it.

You may have a fantastic and creative lesson!

And why not? Join your students and sing Imagine
