Schools : April in Review & Journée Internationale Petit Prince

Schools ! Celebrate the International Jazz Day playing !

International Jazz Day 2017

"Today, we celebrate the international art form of jazz and its power to promote dialogue among cultures, to make the most of diversity, to deepen respect for human rights and all forms of expression."

Irina Bokova, Director-general of UNESCO

The sixth annual International Jazz Day, is celebrated worldwide on April 30, 2017.

International Jazz Day celebrates jazz music as a tool for making connections between people around the world. Through the magic of collective improvisation, jazz allows both listeners and performers to get to know each other, no matter their language or what country or culture they come from.

Havana, Cuba, will serve as the International Jazz Day 2017 Global Host City.

International Jazz Day

Many acclaimed musicians and educators from Cuba and around the world will participate in free jazz performances, master classes, improvisational workshops, jam sessions and community outreach initiatives.

Programs will take place at schools, arts venues, community centers, jazz clubs and parks across the city of Havana and throughout Cuba beginning on Monday, April 24th and leading up to the festivities on April 30th.

Additionally, jazz history and education programs will be provided for tens of thousands of students in over 11,000 schools across Cuba. These programs will be among the thousands of International Jazz Day live performances, educational activities, and community service programs taking place in more than 190 countries on all continents.

The day will culminate with an All-Star Global Concert presented at the Gran Teatro de La Habana Alicia Alonso, under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture of Cuba, the Cuban Institute of Music and the Cuban National Commission for UNESCO.

The concert will be live streamed by UNESCO and will feature an extraordinary array of artists from around the world paying tribute to the international art form of jazz.

  • Some possible activities to teachers and students:

  • Play jazz recordings or video clips and have students write or share their reflections.
  • Discuss how jazz inspires peace, unity, teamwork and communication.
  • Organize a jazz-themed performance by your school band or choir. For example celebrate Ella Fitzgerald 100.
  • Create a class mural or decorate your classroom with jazz-inspired drawings or posters (of instruments or musicians, for example).
  • Explore the mathematical basis of the swing rhythm.
  • Research the history of jazz in your town or city. What makes jazz in your area unique?
  • Develop your own lesson plan centered around jazz – and let us know how it turns out!

Música Inclusiva nas escolas : Music Day

Orquestra Geração | Teatro S. Luís

"Music should be a very solid part of the education of young children."

Sir George Martin

Objectivos:
  • Promover a inclusão social das crianças e jovens de bairros social e economicamente mais desfavorecidos e problemáticos;
  • Combater o abandono e o insucesso escolar;
  • Promover o trabalho de grupo, a disciplina e a responsabilidade para uma melhor cidadania;
  • Promover a auto-estima das crianças e das suas famílias;
  • Aproximar os pais do processo educativo dos filhos;
  • Contribuir para a construção de projectos de vida dos aadolescentes;

The Orquestra Geração programme offers children from underprivileged suburbs of Portugal (Lisbon and other cities), the opportunity to keep on practice music: instruments and music courses are available to them free of charge. It's a musical project for inclusion of the young Portuguese who live innderprivileged suburbs.

I remember the project from Lisbon suburbs that took part at the international tour of Roger Waters (concert in Lisbon) in 2011. Sixteen ethnic kids from "Associação Moinho da Juventude da Cova da Moura"  (near Lisbon) had a special participation on stage with Roger Waters and his fourteen musicians.

The Orquestra Geração has two different projects:

Gerajazz project | Portugal
  • The Gerajazz project, which offers 25 children with a classical background intensive courses in jazz:
  • The Orquestra Municipal project, intended for 30 to 40 children who have already completed their schooling and want to continue their music training outside of school.

Gerajazz project | Portugal

What has happened until now ?
The first Gerajazz two-day workshop took place on the 16th and 17th December with 3 groups of 12 children and 2 teachers in each group. There will be 3 other workshops in the year in order to create a jazz band (25 children minimum, 4 public concerts).
The rehearsals of the Orquestra Municipal have been started since the 5th January and are held every two weeks in the Amadora Theatre in the suburb of Lisbon. The first public concert took place on the 25th April 2013.

Now, the Orquestra Geração is in different Portuguese schools. More than 800 kids and young adolescents from the suburbs are playing music in differents schools.

Education:

The holistic immersive approach of Music (classical, rock, pop, jazzc) and the engagement of important and experencied musicians is central to achieving significant transformation, particularly to the life of the most vulnerable children.

Children and young people from all backgrounds should have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument, to make music with others, to learn to sing or to dance,  to have the opportunity to progress to the next level of excellence.

As I wrote already on this blog: "Music has the potential to achieve social and psychological transformation of children and young people. Their sensibility will be accurate. We must never waste such an opportunity as teachers! Captivating the major interests of our students about Music."

Music, as you can read on several posts on this blog, is fundamental in Education of young people.
Today, we are celebrating the World Music Day in Portugal. Nothing better to present you the Orquestra Geração that follows the El Sistema project.
Happy Music Day !
