Schools : Amy Winehouse, a lonely girl in a huge but brief success career

credits : Amy Winehouse

Amy Winehouse, the British pop soul singer is dead on the 23 July 2011. How said! It was almost inevitable.

The new didn't surprised the music world, Amy Winehouse, singer and songwriter could not win the battle against alcohol and drugs that increasingly overshadowed her talent.

"With her distinctive hairdo, lashings of eye make-up and garish tattoos, Winehouse rocketed to fame that she could not control."

I wrote Amy Winehouse is back in January, 15 2011:

"Amy Winehouse is back! This wonderful singer and composer of soul, jazz and R&B is finally back after almost 5 years of crossing hell! Her tour in Brazil has been successful. Amy is finally back!

She has an incredible talent! She has such a gorgeous voice! She is complex, unique, superb! Hope she's finally back!"

She didn't! Amy Winehouse is dead of accidental alcohol poising at age 27! She will live in her songs! Two albums 'Frank' (2003) and 'Back to Black' (2006), five Grammy Awards in 2008.

Education:

Alcohol and drugs are a sad reality in our days. Sometimes they are among some of our students at school.

Amy's life could be an important alert to discuss the theme in one or two lessons. Include this theme into your school curriculum.

Begin with an open discussion. Let your students to speak free. If they don't know Amy because she's dead some years ago. 12 years yesterday, July 23.

There is the documentary Amy, Oscar winner 2016 based on true facts and documents. Her life was not easy. As Michael Jackson, she began to sing at a very young age. A father who explored her talent and a passive mother who didn't protect her.

When the Amy Winehouse documentary came out in 2016 on theaters. At the end of the film, Amy's fans were with tears in their eyes. We could not left our chairs immediately. Her voice and images were so present in our memory.

Director Asif Kapadia took on the story of her life for the documentary Amy, and told in her own words along with previously unseen archive footage and interviews to tell the London performer's tragic story in her own words.

Prepare a road note to your students before displaying the documentary or watching on the internet or on streaming.

You can watch on HBOA powerful and moving documentary on the short but electrifying life of British singer-songwriter Amy Winehouse

"An extraordinary, powerful work"

IndieWire

From director Asif Kapadia, featuring archival footage of the singer herself, plus interviews with Lauren Gilbert, Mitchell Winehouse, Janis Winehouse, Raye Cosbert, Tyler James, Pete Doherty, Tony Bennett, and more.

At the end, try to evaluate with a simple dialogue if they could understand how sad is to die so young this way. And tell them the danger of drugs and alcohol with some true examples on young people.

*Note: Pay attention to the age of your students and level you are teaching.

Ya, I know, it's difficult to survive to some students. Often they have a disturbed family, sometimes a father like Amy's father or a weak mother.

I taught at some schools where the most part of the students had difficult lives caused by their parents vices.

Important message:

Try to open students eyes and show them how important it is to make the good choices for a better life and future.

Talking with their parents, students will show their parents how important it's attentive support.

I'm sure they will appreciate this life lesson!

A talented songwriter, an amazing voice, but to young to begin a singer career without a good family support.

On the way, she destroyed herself and could not resist to such brutality. The tabloids, the success, the sad love affair and the loneliness.

To me, she will be always 'unique' on her voice and talent! She was an unhappy and lonely young girl. Perhaps to vulnerable and fragile to face such a success.

"Life's short. Anything could happen, and it usually does"

July 3, Jim Morrison desapeared. The myth goes on. 40 years later, the world don't forget The Doors, the voice, the poet, the man.

In Paris, today two concerts. Ray Manzareket (organ) and Robby Krieger (guitar) two musicians of the band will play at Bataclan
They can not use anymore the name "The Doors", but they still play "Riders on the storm", "Roadhouse", "Light my fire".

Jim Morrison fans have the choice to have another concert, at La Cigale, a britsh tribute band The Doors Alive.

The documentary (2010) below about The Doors

It's the first feature documentary about The Doors comprised of entirely unseen archival footage.

Narrated by Johnny Depp and directed by Tom DiCillo.

Two important articles about Jim Morrisson - Le Monde et Expresso newspapers:

"Quarante après sa mort, le mystère Jim Morrison reste entier" - Le Monde.fr | Culture (French language)

" Jim Morrison continua vivo (fotogaleria) - Expresso.pt | Actualidade (Portuguese language)

And of course, you can listen the soundtrack here

“I can state definitively that one of the things I do remember is buying THE DOORS first album the day it came out and then listening to it about ten or twelve times in a row.  Both sides.  Every song.  I’ve been a fan ever since.  This movie is the story of the band but it is also an insight into a moment in time that will never be repeated.”

Do you remember Michael Jackson at Ubisoft? Well, here we are again! So cool! The upcoming video game, Michael Jackson The Experience? So interesting! And funny!

The game was available for the Wii, Nintendo DS and PSP on November 23 2010. It was also available for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in early 2011.*
Michael Jackson The Experience is a typical dance/motion game, but it adds in the magic of MJ’s discography and dance moves.**

"Michael Jackson The Experience will make learning to dance like the ultimate pop icon fun and accessible for everyone. In Michael's School Mode, players will be able to rehearse before their show, with video training to practice Michael's most challenging moves in order to pull them off to perfection."

There is another interesting resource! The American documentary-concert film This Is It directed by Kenny Ortega (2009), a  A compilation of interviews, rehearsals, and backstage footage of Michael Jackson as he prepared for his series of sold-out shows in London.

This Is It
Kenny Ortega, 2009

Kenny Ortega, confirmed that none of the footage was originally intended for release, but after Jackson's death, it was agreed that the film would be made. The footage was filmed in California at the Staples Center and The Forum.

Education:

Young people love King of Pop, music and dance! So, it's a wonderful game and documentary to let kids express themselves learning the moonwalk in music curriculum. And the glove? Just magical for kids!

Teachers can ask students to bring a white glove into the classroom to use it to dance.

  • The film:

Michael Jackson's This Is It offers Jackson fans and music lovers worldwide a rare, behind-the-scenes look at the performer as he developed, created and rehearsed for his sold-out concerts that would have taken place beginning in London at Arena, on October 2009 before his death on 25 June 2009.

Teaching and learning can have fun! Must be! Don't you think? Teachers must be imaginative to captivate the students by creativity in a different and awesome lesson.

You can begin as you wish, but i think it would be better beginning by displaying the documentary in two or three lessons.

This Is It
Kenny Ortega, 2009

Students can express themselves about Michael. Prepare some activities to follow the documentary.

After the documentary, the video game. Prepare some space at school. Outside or inside at a special room.

Students must be invited to dance. And prepare a small show to the school.

And why not a flash mob similar to this one?

See how fanny it is? Of course , teachers can adapt to their students in school or at the city where they teach.

Michael Jackson The Experience official site has enthusiastic fans from all over the world!

Why not to display this game in school curricula ? Amazing digital resource that can transform a music lesson so funny. Students will love to dance.

Wow ! How exciting dancing  on the street! Or at the school outdoor! Feel the experience!
