Yesterday 3 May, Unesco celebrated the World Press Freedom Day. It serves as an occasion to inform citizens of violations of press freedom - a reminder that in dozens of countries around the world, publications are censored, fined, suspended and closed down, while journalists, editors and publishers are harassed, attacked, detained and even murdered.

Under the theme, "Critical Minds for Critical Times: Media's role in advancing peaceful, just and inclusive societies", World Press Freedom Day 2017 calls to stay critical and defend free, independent and quality journalism in order to have better societies.

Every year since 1993 which celebrates the fundamental principles of press freedom; to evaluate press freedom around the world, to defend the media from attacks on their independence and to pay tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in the exercise of their profession.

It is a date to encourage and develop initiatives in favour of press freedom, and to assess the state of press freedom worldwide.

Education: resources for teachers

To mark World Press Freedom Day 2017, UNESCO and Cartooning for Peace, an international organization founded by Kofi Annan, 2001 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and former United Nations Secretary-General, and editorial cartoonist Plantu, have curated a selection of press cartoons.

Designed by committed press cartoonists from around the world, fifteen cartoons combine "humor, satire and tragedy to express their views on the state of press freedom and the many challenges that media and journalists face for informing citizens and carrying out critical reporting on issues of public interest."

Together with Cartooning for Peace/Dessins pour la Paix, Unescowe is publishing Cartoons for Freedom of Expression as part of the celebrations of World Press Freedom Day (3 May 2017).

Ask your students to visit the exposure Cartoons for Freedom of Expression and explore the cartoons before a debate about freedom of expression in the classroom.

Last Saturday, 30 April, Google celebrated the 100th Anniversary of Claude Shannon with an interactive Doodle. The creative Doodle by Nate Swinehart celebrated the brilliance and lightheartedness of the father of modern digital communication.

In its time the Google Doodle has celebrated mathematicians such as, George Boole and Hertha Marks Ayrton - as well codebreaker Alan Turing, the 100th anniversary of whose birth was 23 June 2012.

Now it is the turn of Claude Shannon, who worked with Turing on Allied code breaking during the Second World War - not at Bletchley Park, but in Washington, where Turing had been seconded in 1943 to bring the US up to speed with British crypt analytic developments.

Claude Elwood Shannon is often described as the father of the information age who created the term "bit", short for binary digits. 

It's impossible to overstate the legacy of Claude Shannon. The paper he wrote for his master’s thesis is the foundation of electronic digital computing.

His most famous work is A Mathematical Theory of Communication (1949) in which Shannon introduced information theory, the branch of mathematics focused on transmitting digital data. 

It was in this masterpiece that he coined the term "bit", the fundamental unit of information which relates to digital certainty: true or false, on or off, yes or no.

Include this Doodle into your sciences and math curriculum at school and let your students discover the incredible sicentific work of Claude Elwood Shannon's research work as possible.

Discuss with your students the importance of this mathematician to modern digital communication.

So today I feel like sharing a little bit of French culture with you. The 1st of May is a public holiday in France for the Fête du Travail and the day you will find people offering Le Muguet (Lily of the Valley) to their friends, neighbors and acquaintances, a tradition that began during the Renaissance, in 1561, when Charles IX offered them to his subjects as a symbol of porte-bonheur or good luck.

On April we enjoyed Spring holidays and celebrated Easter in most countries in the world. Students and teachers left school for a week or two. Some students and teachers went on educational field trips. 

But this Easter something went wrong to a great number of South Korean students and their teachers on field trip to Jeju Island.

My tribute goes to the South Korean teenagers and teachers who died at sea. They left school two weeks ago on a field trip with hundreds of classmates. Unfortunately only few came back. About 70 survivors from the sunken South Korean ferry visited a memorial at the Danwon High School in Asnan. For these students, school will never be the same.

"It feels so empty now," said student Kim Song Kyum, 17. "It's not an environment where you can study now."

Tt's a tragedy. So sad. I have no words, I was devastated, absolutely devastated, still am. I have no words.

To the students, teachers, parents and families of Danwon High School in Asnan my deepest thoughts.

Tomorrow is Mother's Day in Portugal. Mother's Day is celebrated on various days in many countries, yet most commonly in Spring, April or May.

Celebrations of mothers and motherhood occur throughout the world; many of these can be traced back to ancient festivals, such as the Greek cult to Cybele, the Roman festival of Hilaria or the Christian Mothering Sunday celebration.

In Portugal Mother's Day is celebrated every first Sunday in May. 

I would like to pay tribute to all the South Korean mothers who lost their children with the poem "To my mother" by Edgar Allan Poe:

Because I feel that, in the Heavens above,
The angels, whispering to one another,

None so devotional as that of "Mother,"

The technology industry is recruiting and needs more women! Girls in ICT Day is our opportunity to show girls what they are missing and introduce them to ICT as an exciting career option.

And today, April 24, we celebrate Girls in ICT Day. It is celebrated on the 4th Thursday of every April and it is an initiative started by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) that aims to empower and encourage girls and young women to consider careers in the sector of technology.

Girls in ICT Day is a time when girls can assess the impact of ICTs on their own lives and gives them the opportunity to reflect on the importance of ICTs to their future careers. It is a day where girls gain hands-on skills in ICT development, and realize that coding, blogging, or app development is a fun and creative way to make a difference in the digital world.

The purpose of the day is to inspire action and identify workable solutions at the European and global level that would address the issue of the female leaking pipeline in ICT training and careers.

Neelie Kroes, Vice-President of the European Commission and Commissioner in charge of Digital Agenda delivered a statement on girls and women in ICT #EveryGirlDigital. Watch  the video below:

What does Girls in ICT Day look like?

• Fun and instructive “open days” for young girls at an ICT company, government agency, or any ICT-related institution
• “Women in ICT career days” at local schools with guest speakers
• Inviting women role models in ICT sector to share their experiences
• Running contests, offering prizes and awards
• “Hands on” experiences for young girls such as developing a mobile app
• Career fairs
• Mentoring and shadowing programmes

The International Girls in ICT Day is an opportunity for girls and young women to get inspired about ICT sector by getting a first-hand look into the ICT institutions and listening to women role models.

Join #GirlsinICT and organize a “Girls in ICT Day” event on or around 24 April 2014 and be a part of this initiative to empower young girls!

Education:

This activity can be done at school. Girls and teachers may interact 

• Invite girls and young women who are at the age to choose their study or career options
• Invite teachers and career advisers who are often not aware of the ICT sector
• Reach out to women role models in the local ICT sector to inspire girls and young women.
• Share examples of innovative solutions which aim at getting more girls and women into ICT jobs!

Level: All levels.

It will depend of you as teachers and the level you are teaching.
