Education : International Girls in ICT Day 2014

"Why just play Angry Birds when you could be designing it? And those opportunities are not just for boys. That’s why I’m passionate about getting more women into tech careers."

Neelie Kroes

The technology industry is recruiting and needs more women! Girls in ICT Day is our opportunity to show girls what they are missing and introduce them to ICT as an exciting career option.

And today, April 24, we celebrate Girls in ICT Day. It is celebrated on the 4th Thursday of every April and it is an initiative started by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) that aims to empower and encourage girls and young women to consider careers in the sector of technology.

Girls in ICT Day is a time when girls can assess the impact of ICTs on their own lives and gives them the opportunity to reflect on the importance of ICTs to their future careers. It is a day where girls gain hands-on skills in ICT development, and realize that coding, blogging, or app development is a fun and creative way to make a difference in the digital world.

The purpose of the day is to inspire action and identify workable solutions at the European and global level that would address the issue of the female leaking pipeline in ICT training and careers.

Neelie Kroes, Vice-President of the European Commission and Commissioner in charge of Digital Agenda delivered a statement on girls and women in ICT #EveryGirlDigital. Watch
 the video below:

'Girls' in ICT Day 2013

And today, April 25, we celebrate Girls in ICT Day. It is celebrated on the 4th Thursday of every April and it is an initiative started by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) that aims to empower and encourage girls and young women to consider careers in the sector of technology.

The purpose of the day is to inspire action and identify workable solutions at the European and global level that would address the issue of the female leaking pipeline in ICT training and careers.

This year the European Commission, the European Parliament and the ITU are joining forces to ensure the maximum visibility for advancing the cause of getting more women into technology.

A discussion of the European-level agenda for advancing the cause of "Women in ICT" during the parliamentary hearing will have two angles:

  • Professional women in ICT careers
  • ICT skills for ICT jobs

Neelie Kroes, Vice-President of the European Commission and Commissioner in charge of Digital Agenda, and the ITU Secretary-General Hamadoun Touré will deliver statements on girls and women in ICT during the hearing.

Today, 25 April around 80 Belgium girls are meeting in Brussels, from 09:00 to 16:00 to imagine life in 2050.
The girls will imagine they wake up on 25 April 2050, in a digital world and see the news. What are the "headlines"? What does the world look like?
The girls will work in groups and come up with and present a news bulletin. They will then identify necessary milestones from today to 2050 to make their news a reality.

The results of the session will feed back to Futurium and the participants will have the opportunity to further shape their Futures online.
This interactive brainstorming event is organised by the Digital Futures Taskforce, the European Commission and the International Telecoms Union to celebrate the "International Girls in ICT Day" to get every Girl Digital.
Education:

This activity can be done at school. Girls and teachers may interact on this interesting brainstorming event.

Share examples of innovative solutions which aim at getting more girls and women into ICT jobs!

Join the discussions on Facebook, Linkedin and Twitter (#girlsdigital)

Level: Secondary; Vocational; Higher Education.

As part of the event, the European Parliament will host a debate on Women in ICT, dealing with women in ICT careers and with skills development.

  • Key parts of the discussion will include:
  • The stereotypical portrayal of girls and women in the media,
  • Industry's responsibility for driving the change in the ICT sector,
  • Digital skills,
  • The business case for getting more women to work in ICT.

This is a way to raise visibility and build widespread support for women in ICT careers on a  local, national, and global scale. And if you are doing something worthy at your level, Digital Agenda would like to know!

Watch the debate live via webstreaming, at 15.00 - 17.30 on 25 April. A final draft agenda is published here.

International Women's Day Centenary : Equal Access to Education !

8 March 2011 is being celebrated in many parts of the world as the 100th Anniversary of International Women's Day.

It is also the first International Women’s Day for UN Women, created by the UN General Assembly on 2 July 2010.

International Women's Day was first celebrated in 1911, when more than one million women and men attended rallies around the world campaigning for women's rights.

Today marks the Centenary of International Women's Day. Originating from labor movements in North America and across Europe at the turn of the 20th Century, International Women's Day is now a global celebration. As the UN says, it is an occasion “for looking back on past struggles and accomplishments, and more importantly, for looking ahead to the untapped potential and opportunities that await future generations of women.”

The official theme of International Women’s Day 2011 is "Equal access to education, training and science and technology: Pathway to decent work for women".

"International Women’s Day was first honored one hundred years ago in a handful of European countries. Since then, the celebration has become global, and much has been achieved. The 2011 International Women’s Day is an opportunity to celebrate achievements and mobilize against the challenges that remain.

(...)

This year’s International Women’s Day is inspired by the theme of ‘Equal access to education, training and science and technology: Pathway to decent work for women.’ This goes to the heart of UNESCO’s mission. We work to strengthen the bridges between education, training, science and technology and the labour market in order to promote equal opportunity to decent employment.

This starts early, with quality education for all girls and young women from the primary to the tertiary level. It continues with vocational training and education for women who have not acquired basic skills. It proceeds with creating positive role models and career tracks – especially in such areas as science and technology."

Teachers play a critical role towards the achievement of the Education for All (EFA) goal on gender equity.

In many developing countries there is a shortage of female teachers, particularly at secondary and tertiary levels and in the subjects of science and maths. Capacity development and awareness-raising are essential to empower women teachers to be both effective practitioners and gender advocates.

UNESCO also works to support gender equity in education, in terms of access and achievement through partnership with key organizations, research and production of guidelines and policy briefs.
