MEDEA Awards 2013 ! Don't forget !




MEDEA Awards 2013

Good morning. I am back from my wonderful summer break in Paris. It was so good to revisit Paris! I will talk about later.

Today, I am going to write about the 6th edition of MEDEA Awards 2013.

MEDEA Awards 2013 announced its call of entries some months ago. Now, the deadline to send your entries as participants is approaching, September 30, 2013.

As you know since 2009 I am participating at MEDEA Awards. So I am glad to promote such an interesting project that encourages innovation and good practices in the use of media in Education.

The deadline to receive participants' entries is 30 September 2013 and the winners will be announced at the MEDEA Awards Ceremony on 12 December 2013 taking place during the Media & Learning Conference (12-13 December) that will take place in Brussels

As an educator, I know how important it is to teachers be encouraged as I was in 2004 from Global Junior Challenge. It is a joy to participate with students at awards that captivate their attention and dignify their school work. It's a bit of fame that students appreciate!

The aim of the MEDEA Awards is "to encourage innovation and good practice in the use of media (audio, video, graphics and animation) in education." 

The awards also recognise and promote excellence in the production and pedagogical design of media-rich learning resources.

Innovation and good practices are possible better with the new technologies always giving us fantastic resources. 

The 'screen-generation' is used to be online all the time. So, innovative educators understood the meaning of changing academic practices and go to digital. Mobile devices really pushed up for pedagogical applications.


Now video, audio are routine components of an open education (in and out school) based on educational environments that recognize and reflect the media-rich world in which our learners now liveEl Rap de la educación 2.0 is conclusive, don't you think?

Participation guidelines:
Entries need to be submitted via the online submission form and sent to arrive at the MEDEA Secretariat via post, e-mail or fax before the closing date: 30 September 2013 midnight). 

In order to participate, you need to log in with your MEDEA account. If you do not have an account yet, you may create a new account. If you have forgotten your password, please request a new password a n

All finalists will be notified in the beginning of November and will be invited to take part in the awards ceremony taking place during the Media & Learning Conference 2012, where the final winners will be announced.

Before submitting a multimedia project or production, MEDEA Awards secretariat strongly recommend that you read the Judging Criteria to understand what the judges are specifically looking for and the criteria they will use when judging your submission, as well as the Terms & Conditions of submission, where you will find the rules for participation in the MEDEA Awards. Read also the important Copyright Information page.

Judges:

With regard to the pedagogical quality, the judges value the comprehensiveness of the resources and the close integration with the curricular activities. 

In addition, the fact that teachers are present with a variety of multimedia-based activities is highly appreciate. 

The suitability of the resources for use in special needs education is considered really important.


Finalists:

All finalists will be notified in the beginning of December and will be invited to take part in the awards ceremony taking place during the Media & Learning Conference 2013, December 12-13, Brussels, where the final winners will be announced.

Out on holidays ! Paris ?! Yes !!

Out to Paris on holiday! Yes!!

J'adore Paris!

Good morning from beautiful Paris! Perfect summer day in Paris admiring again the beautiful city, enjoying every bit.

Wherever you are I hope that you're having a great time too.

Well, finally I could have my summer holiday week! In Paris!! Oh la la! 


Do you remember Midnight in Paris, the film directed by Woody Allen? Just like that! Unbelievable! There's no city like Paris 
in the all world!








Despite my best efforts to slow down time, summer break is quickly drawing to a close. Only few days in Paris!

Summer break is obviously one of the best things humankind has ever come up with, I am excited! It's my 'real' time out for holiday this year.

I will be revisiting the beautiful town, some museums, one night concert at Jazz à la Villette

Et je vais me balader dans Paris !

I'll be back to posting the normal Roundup second week of September.

Schools : Professor Peter Higgs & The Higgs Field !

In July 2012, scientists found the long awaited Higgs Boson, a particle that, according to theoretical physics, gives all elementary particles mass. Without the Higgs boson, these particles would remain mass less, and our bodies, blankets, cups of tea, dogs, and universe wouldn’t exist.


Professor Higgs predicted the existence of a unique type of fundamental particle - now named the Higgs boson in his honour - which is essential in allowing the mathematics of the standard model to work.

In the 1960s Higgs and other physicists worked on an idea to explain why the building blocks of the Universe have mass.


It sparked a search for the 'Holy Grail of physics' - a particle that could explain three fundamental forces (electromagnetism and the weak and the strong nuclear forces) in one theory.

In 2012 scientists using the Large Hadron Collider at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Switzerland finally discovered it - they named it the Higgs boson.

A year later, 2013, Higgs' work was recognised in his Nobel Prize which he shared with Francois Englert of Belgium.

But the boson and the Higgs Field that allows for that magic particle are extremely difficult to grasp.

 (CERN) has produced his take on explaining the Higgs field for Ted-Ed education network in a animated video 
In the animated video for the Ted-Ed education network, Fermilab's Don Lincoln explains the Higgs field with an analogy about a cocktail party.









The boson and the Higgs Field that allows for that magic particle are extremely difficult to grasp. 


This video by Don Lincoln (CERN) explains it. It's a good digital resource to include into Physics curriculum and explain the Higgs field.







Professor Peter Higgs Nobel Prize for Physics



Professor Peter Higgs was awarded jointly to François Englert with the Nobel Prize for Physics, on October 8. 2013 for:


"the theoretical discovery of a mechanism that contributes to our understanding of the origin of mass of subatomic particles, and which recently was confirmed through the discovery of the predicted fundamental particle, by the ATLAS and CMS experiments at CERN's Large Hadron Collider"

One of the most significant scientific discoveries of the early 21st century is the Higgs boson


Professor Higgs predicted the existence of a unique type of fundamental particle - now named the Higgs boson in his honour - which is essential in allowing the mathematics of the standard model to work. 

The 4th July 2012 CERN announced the discovery of a new particle, consistent with the Higgs boson.









The existence of the boson was a matter of intense speculation for 50 years, until its final discovery last year at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) - the world's most powerful particle accelerator.

Six years after its discovery, the Higgs boson has at last been observed decaying to fundamental particles known as bottom quarks. 

The finding, presented today at CERN by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), is consistent with the hypothesis that the all-pervading quantum field behind the Higgs boson also gives mass to the bottom quark. Both teams have submitted their results for publication today. 

Education:


This a awesome matter to include into Sciences curricula, specially Physics curriculum  and discuss it with students accedssing to Higgs boson videos on CERN webisite. Videos are interesting and powerful digital resources to include into the school curriculum.


Some years ago a teacher displayed videos in the classroom once in a while. Now is very commonly used. Always as a 
motivation or a better explanation to a subject in lessons.

I can tell you as a teacher that students love and learn easily watching a video than hearing thousands words.

Final notes:


Today videos are used 
frequently in the classroom among other educational digital resources, to enrich lessons.
 

There are a great number of videos and other all sort of educational digital resources that you can include into school curricula. Students evolve well their skills when we use technology and educational digital resources. 


But, don't forget to prepare the exploration of each one before your lesson. And join some practical activities.


Teachers value is not in the information stored in their head. Teachers must have the ability to pull together the best learning resources to produce a desired outcome.

Professor Peter Higgs a giant of science died the 8 April 2024, confirmed the University of Edinburgh.
