UNESCO invites young people living or travelling along the Silk Roads to join 2019 edition of the Youth Eyes on the Silk Roads Photo Contest, promoting dialogue, diversity, and development.

The contest is organized in the context of the UNESCO Silk Roads Programme, the UNESCO Youth Programme, and the International Decade for the Rapprochement of Cultures (2013-2022).

This photo contest is an annual visual studies and educational initiative designed to promote the common heritage of the Silk Roads. 

It officially launched on 19 September 2019 and is open to participants aged 14-25 living in or travelling along the Silk Roads. 

The deadline for contributions has been extended to 31 January 2020 23:59:59 (GMT+1).

Participants are invited to express their unique creativity and individuality through the medium of photography, sharing images that highlight the significant cultural interactions inherited from the Silk Roads.

The Silk Roads are an expansive region composed of a network of maritime and land routes. Please see the map here

Themes:

This year photographs must highlight Silk Roads common heritage through the three themes of:

• gastronomy and food production,

• music and dance, 

• traditional sports and games.

Contributions will be examined by an international Selection Committee composed of renowned experts.

Who can participate?

Participants aged 14-25

Categories:

There will be two distinct categories for winners: 

• 14-17 years old, 

• 18-25 years old. 

Three winners, each to receive prizes, will be selected from each of these categories, and their names will be announced online on 21 March 2020.

Before officially entering the Youth Eyes on the Silk Roads Photo Contest, participants must read Rules here

In order to participate, participants should first create an account by completing the mandatory fields with the requested information. 

Then they will be able to upload their photos to the contest’s website via their account. 

Note: All submitted information should be in English.

Prizes:

The winners will receive:

• 1st place: A professional digital single-lens reflex camera;

• 2nd place:  a semi-professional camera

• 3rd place: a standard-model digital camera. 

In addition, winners will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to an awards ceremony. 

Additionally, a travelling exhibition of around fifty photos that best represent the spirit of the contest and its themes will be exhibited in various countries around the world.

These selected photographs will also appear in a professionally bound collection of printed images.  

The visual arts, and in particular photography, are increasingly being used by today’s youth as a powerful tool for communication and self-expression. As such, they have the potential to play a significant role in raising awareness of the key issues facing our contemporary globalizing world. 

The annual Youth Eyes on the Silk Roads International Photo Contest offers an exciting opportunity for young people from all over the world to capture their understanding of the common heritage of the Silk Roads through the lens of their camera. 

Sharing images that capture elements of cultural interaction stimulates dialogue, fosters mutual understanding, and promotes peace among diverse populations.

The prolific and incredible Belgian writer, Georges Simenon, was dead 30 years, on the 4 September 1989.

His serious novels that involve elements of crime and melodrama continue to fascinate writers and readers.

He has at last achieved, at the age of 60, what one French critic (Jacqueline Barde) calls "son grand roman, son premier roman." 

And in this first "pure" novel, even the hitherto confused should be able to see why André Gide long ago described this author as "perhaps the greatest and most truly 'novelistic' novelist in French literature today." 

"Gide wholehearted enthusiasm for Simenon and Dashiell Hammett must be a persistent obstacle for those who insist on drawing a sharp line between "entertainment" and "literature."

Born in Liège (Belgium) on 13th February in 1903, began writing in his teens. In a decade or so he wrote two or three hundred books under 17 pseudonyms, of the most hack description - spy stories, westerns, sentimental novels for girls, and other.

In his late twenties, Simenon moved up several notches with the creation of Commissionaire Maigret (1930) and other less known but rewarding fictional detectives.

Simenon wrote 84 Maigret adventures and 136 other novels under his own name, and some 200 novellas under 17 pseudonyms early in his career.

His work consists of 391 titles, and he is best known as the creator of the fictional detective series consisting of 75 books featuring Inspecteur Maigret, translated into more than 50 languages.

Back from my summer break, Yes! Summer break, here I am again! Well, finally Summer arrived on the north of Portugal! August was a cold month.

September entered quite nice! On the beach lovely weather! No windy days, such a wonderful time! The sea! Cold water, of course, no problem! And so relaxing to walk by the sea, feeling the freshness. A lot of young kids surfing! Finally, we could enjoy summer!

Take part in the #EUinmyRegion competition until 28 August and get a chance to win the EU Photo Competition 2017.

Participate in the Europe in My Region photo competition for a chance to win a 2-night trip for two to Brussels and to take part in a photography workshop in 9-12 October 2017.

The photography workshop is offered by The Photo Academy which organises photo classes for the general public across Europe.

The competition:

Europe in My Region is a European Union-wide campaign encouraging citizens to discover European projects near them. 

In 2017, four different initiatives - project openings, a photo contest, a project hunt and a blogging contest.

Information +

Invite the public to visit projects, share your images and experiences via social media. Thousands of EU projects open their doors mainly in May, a project hunt was organised from 2 May to 14 June, a blogging contest was running until 27 June. And a photo contest is running from 2 May to 28 August 2017.

Young Europeans, students who from all over the Europe, begin in you region, and discover, play and win trips across Europe!

Aims:

The Europe in My Region Photo Competition aims to highlight the excellent work that projects across the European Union and candidate countries are doing with the help of EU funding, and make citizens notice what Europe is doing for them in their region.

It is an opportunity for a personal reflection on the role of EU funded projects from people who are living, working or visiting near projects and to celebrate the work they do.

Rules:

To enter the competition, all you need to do is take a photo of a project receiving EU funding you know or have seen, with the EU funding information and the EU flag somewhere in the picture.

Deadline:

The deadline for submitting up to 3 photos is 27 August 2017, 23:59 Central European Summer Time.

How to take part? 3 easy steps:

• Spot an EU-funded project

• Take a photo: EU flag and funding information should be clearly visible somewhere in the picture

• Submit up to 3 photos via the APP

Important Dates:

• Submission of photos: 2 May-27 August 2017, 23:59 CEST

• Voting: 1-10 September 2017, 23:59 CEST

• Jury meeting: 11-14 September 2017

• Announcement of the winners: 15 September 2017

• Winners to come to Brussels: 9-12 October 2017.

Three winners will be selected by a jury of photography and social media experts, and people vote.

Education:

Interesting activity to students who love Photograpy or study Arts Photography, don't you think? An interesting activity during their summer break.

Students love participate in contests. They get excited to show off their skills no matter the contest. But a contest about photograpy?  

It will be gorgeous inviting students in Photography via social networks to valorize European countries. And seeing them traveling on their own region to get a good picture.

They will participate in this photo contest uploading a photo that they can shot in a big city, a small town, whatever in their country.

Genre of photography that can be understood as the product of an artistic interaction between a photographer and an urban public space with EU fundings.

Street or urban photographer’s images are not intended to illustrate a new story. Instead, their primary goal is expressive and communicates a subjective impression of the Eu fundings in their region. 

#EUinMyRegion could be an interesting activity for those students who are enjoying summer holidays or to those students who preparing their exams. During a breack and going, a good relaxing activity.
