Schools ! Celebrate the International Jazz Day playing !

International Jazz Day 2017

"Today, we celebrate the international art form of jazz and its power to promote dialogue among cultures, to make the most of diversity, to deepen respect for human rights and all forms of expression."

Irina Bokova, Director-general of UNESCO

The sixth annual International Jazz Day, is celebrated worldwide on April 30, 2017.

International Jazz Day celebrates jazz music as a tool for making connections between people around the world. Through the magic of collective improvisation, jazz allows both listeners and performers to get to know each other, no matter their language or what country or culture they come from.

Havana, Cuba, will serve as the International Jazz Day 2017 Global Host City.

International Jazz Day

Many acclaimed musicians and educators from Cuba and around the world will participate in free jazz performances, master classes, improvisational workshops, jam sessions and community outreach initiatives.

Programs will take place at schools, arts venues, community centers, jazz clubs and parks across the city of Havana and throughout Cuba beginning on Monday, April 24th and leading up to the festivities on April 30th.

Additionally, jazz history and education programs will be provided for tens of thousands of students in over 11,000 schools across Cuba. These programs will be among the thousands of International Jazz Day live performances, educational activities, and community service programs taking place in more than 190 countries on all continents.

The day will culminate with an All-Star Global Concert presented at the Gran Teatro de La Habana Alicia Alonso, under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture of Cuba, the Cuban Institute of Music and the Cuban National Commission for UNESCO.

The concert will be live streamed by UNESCO and will feature an extraordinary array of artists from around the world paying tribute to the international art form of jazz.

It's up to you, really!

  • Some possible activities to teachers and students:

  • Play jazz recordings or video clips and have students write or share their reflections.
  • Discuss how jazz inspires peace, unity, teamwork and communication.
  • Organize a jazz-themed performance by your school band or choir. For example celebrate Ella Fitzgerald 100.
  • Create a class mural or decorate your classroom with jazz-inspired drawings or posters (of instruments or musicians, for example).
  • Explore the mathematical basis of the swing rhythm.
  • Research the history of jazz in your town or city. What makes jazz in your area unique?
  • Develop your own lesson plan centered around jazz – and let us know how it turns out!

Xicara in School : music & poetry

Xicara
Photo: Mané Vidal

Xicara is a Portuguese group that mixes Portuguese poetry and folk music.

The group intends to provide a musical tribute to Portuguese poets, recalling traditions and celebrating Camões language, the symbol of Portuguese language.

Born of a Portuguese musical research of ethnography, this project aims the union of Portuguese traditional melodies and Portuguese Literature.

Revisiting Portuguese poetry, Xicara enlights the ability to inspire other forms of artistic expression.

Xicara | Concert

Resulting from this union, a plurality of colors and shapes that extend in a ethnographic perspective, literary, musical and pedagogical.

Education:

Xicara tends to reach a younger audience, revealing a different facet of Portuguese poetry, the same Poetry that educators teach in Portuguese  language curriculum.

At the same time, Xicara declares the dynamic and multifaceted character of educational Music.

Xicara could be a wonderful motivation to introduce Portuguese Poetry into the classroom in a cross-curricula between Languages curriculum and Music curriculum.

Curricula: Languages ; Music

Target: High Junior Education ; Vocacional Education: Arts |Music

Xicara brings an universe of beauty, fresh sonority and art to our students!

Why languages matter? Languages matter because they help us to express our diverse heritage, perspectives, knowledge, ideas and emotions across generations.

And Music?

"It's an explosive expression of humanity. It's something we are all touched by. No matter what culture we're from, everyone loves music."

Billy Joel
