May: rundown of the most-read posts

Photo: Björk | Rui Gaudêncio

I have found that some of our best models of how to teach already exist in many of our classrooms. Good elementary teachers, good music and art teachers (and our best teachers in general) rarely lecture; they almost always let their students create “by and for themselves” with the teacher’s guidance."

Marc Prensky

The quote identifies the diversity of pedagogical proposals that I share with you throughout the years.

I believe and practice the differentiation by focusing on individual identity of my students. They are free to be creative by discovering 'by and themselves' with my guidance, just the sufficient to let them more comfortable in their learning. I wrote about it on the differentt posts of my blog.

The classroom is an open window to the world. Students must feel free to talk  and share ideas about all the subjects they care about.

May rundown shows the diversity of subjects and summarize the most-read topics in a collection of seven posts.

From Digital Natives to Digital Wisdom
Janvier 2012

Now doubt! Marc Prensky à Serious Game.be was the most-read post May!

Eh! Oui! Marc Prensky fut l'invité d'honneur, le "guest star" à Serious Game.be.

Me Mom - I'm Learning!

"It is essential for us to raise awareness of this phone number, as experience shows that the first hours following a child’s disappearance are of vital importance,"

Sir Francis Jacobs, President of MCE

International Missing Children's Day promoted the hotline, MCE  releasead a video in all countries where the 116 000 hotline is available and launches a new Google Search Appliance for missing children in cooperation  with its partners Google and Telefono Azzurro.

Child poverty in developed conutries: Children's Day was marked this year with speeches on children's rights and wellbeing, and other events involving or dedicated to children.

"As debates rage on austerity measures and social spending cuts, a new report reveals the extent of child poverty and child deprivation in the world’s advanced economies.

Some 13 million children in the European Union (plus Norway and Iceland) lack basic items necessary for their development.

Meanwhile, 30 million children - across 35 countries with developed economies - live in poverty."

UNICEF (Brussels, 29 May 2012)

Every year we write and show pictures about poverty in underdeveloped countries. But a new reality appears. Poverty among children in "developed" countries.

Photo: unknow author

Reading this report and watching the video, as an educator, today, I must write about the new poverty among our students in our schools, in our countries.

Teachers stimulate their pupils to think about the differences between themselves and others and explain the idea of "rights". In countries where the rights of children are generally well-respected, teachers may draw attention to situations in countries where this is not the case.

Now, teachers help students draw attention to situations like students living below poverty line in their own schools, or countries.

Teachers in their countries have a crucial role on the alert of poverty cases among their students.

International Museum Day 2012

Let's talk about Museums! May 18 plently of Museums were celebrating International Museum Day with free admission and other special activities.

The theme for 2012 is "Museums in a Changing World. New challenges, New inspirations."

"The world is changing faster than ever. New technology delivers new ideas, gigabytes of information, news of an increasingly unstable climate, all shared by social media.

Well, let you and your students embark on an adventure learning experience at  the International Museum Day.

A visit to a Museum will find you enjoying the numerous interactive exhibits, the daily hands-on activities and the monthly special events.

"Despite its importance, marine biodiversity — the theme of this year's International Day for Biological Diversity — has not fared well at human hands. Commercial over-exploitation of the world’s fish stocks is severe. Many species have been hunted to fractions of their original populations"
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon (2012)

The National Museum of Natural History and Science of Lisbon in partnership with ISPA-Instituto Universitário within the project "natural soundscapes in a changing world" is challenging the community of researchers and nature recordists to record animal sounds in Portugal and else where from the 14-27 May to celebrate theInternational Day for Biological Diversity.

In Portugal Mother's Day is celebrated first Sunday in May. So today, for Portuguese mothers is the day!

A beautiful book honoring Mother's Day by Portuguese writer Eugénio Roda (thematic aphorisms) and Portuguese illustrator Gémeo Luís, selected to represent the Portuguese illustratrors at Chidren's Book Bologna Fair (Italy 2012).

MinhaMãe, My Mother is published in eight languages: French, English, Spanish, Italian, Deutsch, Dutch, Greek. A different colour for each language.

A lovely suggestion for Mother's Day?

I really hope that you enjoy every pedagogical proposal written in May or discover some new pedagogical ideas to introduce in your lessons.

I thank you very much to all the colleagues from around the world that kindly read my blog.

  • Edugames, learning games, simulation et mondes virtuels
  • Advergames

Oui! Marck Prensky!

“Digital culture has revolutionary implications for education that too few people grasp. Marc Prensky understands them better than anyone I know. His insights and clarity shine a powerful light on the deficiencies of education in the present and illuminate the extraordinary possibilities of the future.”

Sir Ken Robinson, The Element

Me Mom - I'm Learning!

Eh! Oui! Marc Prensky sera l'invité d'honneur, le "guest star" à Serious Game.be.

Marck Prensky (2007)

From Digital Natives to Digital Wisdom
Janvier 2012

"The most important thing I have learned from carefully re-observing education in my later years is how little most  educators really listen to the kids they teach (although  a great  many  of those  educators think they do)."

Marc Prensky

Bon!

"Not that our young people have all the answers—they don’t. But they do have the educational needs. (...) The kids just need and want the skills and tools to succeed in their own times and lives."

Marc Prensky

I have found that some of our best models of how to teach already exist in many of our classrooms. Good elementary teachers, good music and art teachers (and our best teachers in general) rarely lecture; they almost always let their students create “by and for themselves” with the teacher’s guidance."

Marc Prensky

Digital Schools versus Digital Teachers

John Palfrey | Hanser
"Today's students – K through college – represent the first generations to grow up with this new technology. They have spent their entire lives surrounded by and using computers, videogames, digital music players, video cams, cell phones, and all the other toys and tools of the digital age."

Marc Prensky, 2001

Children and adolescents in digital societies are growing up in a world where digital technologies are ubiquitous.

Internet is used by net-generation also for education and learning purposes, often outside the classroom.

This emergence of digital native learners has major potential implications for Education.

Games and Digital Resources in School is an important and serious goal in the 21st century focus on the changing face of Education.

I am a "digital pioneer" teacher. I can not be called a "digital immigrant" . I did not grow up with Technology. Technology grew up with me, and I was there every step of the way. A "digital pioneer" who is doing an enthousiastic job infusing technology meaningfully into teaching and learning, in and out school.

I am a tech educational researcher and a learning author for quite a time! practise formal and informal learning called blended learning.

After previewing the digital resource, created by myself or choose by myself, I put it in context phase, that means in the classroom and out school, observing my own students as they interact with the digital resource selected.

The selection must be the most desirable in terms of educational objectives and constraints.

I could feel the enthousiasm of the "N-Gen", when the Web 2.0 entered into my  lessons as being part of the curriculum.

I teach on formal (face-to-face teaching) and informal learning (web 2.0). Never missing a new way or option to use digital resources in Education.

My students can reach me by email, on Messenger since 1999, texting, blogs or Moodle plataform since 2002.

As an tech-savvy educator, I am teaching to the current generation of digital natives in ways that support these students varied learning styles.

Rick Wilking/ Reuters 2009

Reseachers and teachers recognise that learning is ongoing and seeks to provide digital resources of quality to support learning on schools.

The assessment of these new tools and devices in curricula is crucial! These digital resources must be certified by experts in IT & Education who have the knowledge of school curricula contents .

The feed-back of experimentation done by teachers and students have an enormous impact.

The objective of the assessment is to analyse the N-Gen - "new learning generation" in the classroom and out school, understand their expectations and attitudes facing the "new ways of learning", using educational digital resources.

Expert teachers must analyse needs and goals carefully, specify the requirements, and finally, test digital resources in the classroom, with different students.

Digital resources, games, virtual worlds, web 2.0 technologies used in Education, after being analized and tested in real contexts, could join a kind of repository for teachers, parents, and students.

Something is already done by Merlot (Multimedia Educational Resource for Learning and Online Teaching).

Also European Schoolnet in cooperation with the International Software Federation of Europe (ISFE) organised an European Conference on the use of electronic games in schools on 5 May 2009 in Strasbourg, France.

gis_small013.jpg

Conference "Games on Schools"
John Dowell (University College London) concluded by raising the point that some argue from generation to generation that our intelligence is evolving2) and indeed rising. If this is true, intelligence is also evolving into different forms, such as games and may even be driven by this kind of popular culture.

Well, "Digital games in schools" has been published with the support of the Interactive Software Federation of Europe:

Written by Dr Patrick Felicia, a researcher at the Waterford Institute of Technology in Ireland, the handbook is intended for teachers interested in using digital games in their lessons. It provides the necessary information to understand the educational benefits of digital games and to learn how to use them as educational and motivational resources. The handbook is available in digital version below and can be ordered in print against a small fee to cover shipping cost.

Games in Schools Community of Practice report is now available in PDF (english version) here

I'ts a very good step on this long way from good practical examples!

"Should we create a parallel curriculum for 21st century learning? Games can surely contribute. Perhaps on EU level, we need to build such a curriculum?"

John Dowell

Some thoughts:

I don't know if we must create a parallel curriculum. I think it's very important to create new curricula crossing traditional pedagogy and digital tools for digital natives if we want keep our students focus on school time!

I have received notable recognition for using games, videos, blogs, web 2.0 technologies to inspire the students in educational contexts: school curriculum. They were creative and follow my innovation in school and out school (at home).

Now, I am a Certified Expert ICT and Curricula recognised by my pedagogical experience and scientific articles in the field of Education. I am a speaker at several national and international conferences.

The impact of Digital Educational Resources on cognitive skills and on learning expectations, and the evolution of social values and lifestyles are important issues.
