Race Against Hunger 2011

"The Race Against Hunger is a service learning campaign that unites different cities from all over the world in the fight against global hunger and malnutrition. 

Tapping into the great potential of youth to become powerful agents of change, the Race aims to educate young too about the causes of global and domestic hunger and inspire them to be a part of the solution."

"End Hunger: Walk the World" is an annual event to raise money and awareness for WFP’s efforts to fight child hunger and malnutrition."

Education:

During the next week, educators can still  involve subject-based learning activities to educate students about the issues around global hunger. Foster a sense of community and global citizenship among students.

Some activities might be designed to meet curricula requirements so that educators can easily implement them in the classroom.

• Enrich your curriculum by incorporating global issues into classroom activities: slogans, flyers, pins, lyrics writen by students based on music songs they love to hear.

• Join the fight against hunger by spreading awareness in your school and community (parents, familiars, friends)

• Help children around the world who suffer from hunger and malnutrition.

After the educational component, students will have the opportunity to become actively involved in the fight against hunger by participating in a “fun-run” event.

The Race can take place on school grounds (primary school), in a local park (elementary and secondary schools), depending on what works best for your school. 
The program designed might be tailored to fit the needs of each school.

In Portugal, the "Race Against Hunger" will take place in Lisbon and Porto, tomorrow, May 22, 2011, at 10:00 (Portuguese time).

Portuguese educators had the opportunity to involve the Portuguese students in different activities. And a lot of schools organized fun-runs against hunger.

In other cities of the world the "Race Against Hunger" have different days. So, go on the site End Hunger World Race to join a Walk in your neighborhood or to create a Walk.

Kids and educators might join familiar, friends to participate in the great race after the "fun-run" in the school or the park.

Europe Day celebration on 9 May 1950, the day the French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman presented his proposal on the creation of an organised Europe, to help maintain peaceful relations between European countries. In cooperation with Jean Monnet he drew up the internationally renowned Schuman Plan, which he published on 9 May 1950, the date now regarded as the birth of the European Union. Robert Schuman is the architect of the European integration project.

Since then, every year, Europe Day is celebrated on May 9. For many Europeans it is not yet well known, but since 1985, Europe has its own day to celebrate the specific character of Europe. The unique European mix of numerous different languages, countries, regions, food, music; all in a rather small geographical location; that constitutes Europe.

Each year has a different theme. The theme for 2011 is "Know Your Rights, Use Your Rights". 

Portugal is in the EU since 1986. Portugal, a country with a rich history of seafaring and discovery, looks out from the Iberian Peninsula onto the Atlantic Ocean. 

Portugal's history has had a lasting impact on the culture of the country: Moorish and Oriental influences in architecture and the arts are prominent.

The University of Coimbra, established in 1290, is one of the oldest in Europe. In 1290 the University is founded in Lisbon by royal decree of King Dinis. Until the end of the 13th century it is part of a small group of 15 operating universities in Europe. After a period of alternation between the cities of Lisbon and Coimbra, the definite transference occurs in 1537, by order of King John III and with the strong influence of the Santa Cruz Monastery.

Within the framework of the European year for volunteering, special attention will be given to the European and national volunteering programme and to the role played by volunteers and volunteering in favor of the actions developed by CSOs to communicate and promote the European project and bridging the gap between citizens and the European institutions.

Education:

Teachers must include into the school curriculum the Europe Day  and European Year of Volunteering to teach European citizenship. Portugal is an old member of the EU.

Curriculum : All curricula or cross-curricular.

Level : All levels. 

Let the students explore both themes and debate the meaning of solidarity between all the European countries!

Water talks & Civics in school

Solidarités International is a humanitarian organisation which provides aid and assistance to victims of war or natural disaster. For 30 years the association has concentrated its action on meeting three vital needs - water, food and shelter.

Solidarités International are particularly committed to fighting water-borne diseases - the most frequent cause of death worldwide.

Education:

It's an excellent motivation to discuss humanitarian causes and volunteering as a civic value in different currivulum. 

2011 is the European Year of Volunteering. You could use my post 'Le droit à l'éducation' here to introduce the theme of young volunteering.

After watching the video 'Water talks', students could search about Solidarités International (English, French) and get more information. 

After a good discussion about volunteering, they could create a school page on jecollectepoursolidarites.org, after choosing the right action here
