Aproxima-se o final do Ano do Centenário do Nascimento de José Saramago que completaria 100 anos no dia 16 de Novembro 2022.

A Fundação José Saramago prepara um Programa especial para o dia 16 de Novembro de 2022, data do Centésimo Aniversário do escritor. 

A programação tem início às 10:00 horas, quando milhares de alunos de escolas secundárias de Portugal, Espanha e outros países lerão excertos de romances de José Saramago num programa intitulado Leituras Centenárias.

Saramago na Escola: Leituras Centenárias, uma iniciativa da Fundação José Saramago, em parceria com o Plano Nacional Leitura e com a Rede Bibliotecas Escolares, faz parte do programa do Centenário de José Saramago.

No dia 16 de Novembro, centenário de nascimento de José Saramago, alunos de escolas secundárias portuguesas participam das Leituras Centenárias.

 

Para além de constituir uma evocação do escritor José Saramago, as Leituras Centenárias procurarão motivar os jovens para a leitura, para o aperfeiçoamento da língua, para a compreensão do texto narrativo e para o questionamento e diálogo sobre nós próprios, a sociedade e o meio ambiente.

As Leituras Centenárias serão realizadas em simultâneo, pelos alunos ou alunas participantes, com orientação do(a) respectivo(a) professor(a) ou dos(as) Professores(as) Bibliotecários(as), às 10 horas do dia 16 de Novembro de 2022.

Desejavelmente e sempre que tal seja viável, as leituras serão difundidas em tempo real, através de redes sociais adequadas e com prévio anúncio, em especial junto na comunidade escolar.

Nota: Sou profundamente contra a omissão de José Saramago dos programas do Ensino Secundário. Como é possível ? E não é só pelo facto de ser o único Prémio Nobel da Literatura do  nosso país.

Duas obras que se podem entrecruzar sem ser necessário estar a por em consulta. Separemos os autores das políticas, e façamos literatura nas nossas aulas conjuntamente com os nossos alunos.

Mas será que estes especialistas não entendem quw ha professores quw sabem muito bem seleccionar obras literárias segundo o perfil dos alunos?!?

Dei muitas obras não inseridas nos programas. Autores cmompletamente esquecidos, mas que se adptavam peofeitamente ao perfil dos alunos, E dei muitas dos programas a que os alunos não aderiam.

Dei ao longo dos anos O Memorial do Convento uma obra imortante para compreendermos uma parte da história, mas também pelo estilo da escrita do autor. Os alunos gostavam mesmo de o ler e estudar. 

Lembro de o dar no 12º de uma Escola Profissional de Música e os alunos, músicos, ficaram presos à obra. Gerou muitos debates, Saímos todos mais enriquecidos.

If this week already feels like a major struggle, we can probably blame the time change. Even though most of us seem to hate it, we still have to deal with daylight saving time.

Daylight Saving Time (DST) is the practice of setting the clocks forward one hour from standard time during the summer months, and back again in the fall, in order to make better use of natural daylight.

In European countries fall back time was 29 October 2022. In the United States was the 6 November 2022 both at 2:00 A.M.-

Worldwide, more than 70 countries observe daylight saving time.

Clocks were set back 1 hour from 02:00 (2 am) to 01:00 (1 am) local time on Sunday, November 6, 2022. 

As always, Europe ended DST a week before the US, on October 30, 2022.

Law text for the world's first nationwide DST switch

When Germany first set the clocks forward on April 30, 1916, it became the first country in the world to use DST on a national level. However, the town of Thunder Bay in Ontario, Canada implemented DST as far back as 1908.

About DST in the US:

On March 15, 2022, the US Senate surprisingly and unanimously passed the Sunshine Protection Act. The announcement came two days after most of the US set their clocks forward one hour for DST. 

If the bill passes the next stage, permanent DST will be the new standard time in all but two states in the US. States that don’t have DST, including Hawaii and most of Arizona, may choose the original standard time.

Many states want to remove DST. 18 states have enacted legislation or passed regulations for permanent DST.

Similar situation in Europe. Most of Europe started DST on 30 October, 2022. However, frustrations with the DST clock changes have led the European Parliament to draft a law to remove DST in the European Union permanently.

The removal of DST was initially planned for 2021, but it did not happen. In 2020 and 2021, Europe, like the rest of the world, was busy handling the health and economic effects of Covid-19.

About DST in Europe:

Years after the proposal to end the seasonal changes of time across the EU was first released, Europeans will on Sunday, 29 October have to again set their clocks back, a practice that's unlikely to change soon. 

The European Commission unveiled its proposal to abolish the time change in September 2018 following a public consultation in which an overwhelming majority of the 4.6 million European citizens who took part called for the practice to be brought to an end. 

Since then, nothing. Negotiations have still not started in the European Council.

Massive support for halting daylight saving time:

• Over 80 percent of respondents supported abolishing changing the clocks in summer and winter in a survey that ran between July 4 and August 16 2018, according to media reports on the results.

• Some 4.6 million people took part in the online survey, making it the largest one in EU history.

• The survey particularly struck a chord with Germans, with three million taking part.

Time to discuss ending seasonal clock changes has therefore been scarce.

Daylight Saving Time (DST), where clocks are set ahead one hour in early spring and set back one hour in the autumn, was first introduced in Europe in 1916 when Germany, then still at war, was trying to reduce consumption of coal so it could be used for its weapon factories. 

Most neighbouring countries, as well as the UK, US and Australia, followed suit. 

The practice was mostly abandoned in Europe after World War II but was rolled out once more in the 1970s due to the oil shock, in a renewed bid to reduce the need for artificial light and thus energy use.

A number of studies have since shown that its impact on energy consumption is now negligible thanks in part to advances in technology. Evidence is however mounting that DST has adverse effects on health.

DST & health:

It might seem frivolous to argue over the clocks, but it has real health implications. Disrupted sleep has been associated with heart disease, depression, obesity, reduced cognitive function, stress, memory deficits... The list goes on in the week following the shift to DST. A small bump in car accidents also tends to be recorded.

Unfortunately, sleep was something that, until recently, didn’t get much respect culturally.

That's because our "social clock", ie, the schedule under which our societies operate, and our internal clocks, which are more or less aligned with the sun, are out of whack.

Education:

Teachers know how DST (spring forwards an fall back time) can be disruptive to us, and to students as well. Students feel tired in the morning during the first week or two. We feel a bit stressed too. 

• Promote an open debate among your students and at school about DST pros and cons.

• How does DST affect the sleeping time of the students and the full attention during classes.

Activities

Students are always very curious about why 'things' happen! Here a good way to let them learn about DST fall back time, and some help.

It's the last week! Time to talk about Pink October in school education. Always!

Education helps students and teachers to aware about Breast Cancer and other cancer diseases to be informed and take care of family, but also of their own lives.

Let us all, teachers and students, take part in October’s Breast Cancer Awareness campaign to increase awareness about the disease. 

💗Theme 2022:

 “Be the heroine of your life”.

On this occasion, Pink Ribbon Foundation inaugurated its awareness campaign organized all throughout October, with the theme of “heroines”, accompanied by its powerful message: “Be the heroine of your life”.

Every year an new opportunity to draw attention from our students. Girls and boys are growing up faster and need to be aware that it is out there and early detection is the best cure and hope of getting through this awful thing.

😪Let me remind you, the leading cause of death for children under the age of 15:

"In developing countries, over 100,000 children die each year due to poor diagnoses and lack of access to basic treatment options. If given the generic drugs and simple medical procedures so desperately needed it is estimated that more than half of them could be saved. Instead, survival rates stand at 20 percent."

Most cancer awareness programs traditionally target adults and populations considered to be at risk for developing cancer. Consequently, little attention has been given to educating younger populations about cancer. To address this gap in childhood education.

Unfortunaly, as educators, we all have known in school some children and young people who have or had cancer or often coexist with cancer because they have brothers or sisters, sometimes mothers or grandmothers suffering with this disease.

Schools must holding special programs to tell students about how survival rates increases through an early detection.

I think it would be very important to include cancer awareness into every school curriculum, not only in sciences curriculum.

I know several schools that involve young students to raise awareness about this disease. I did every year.

Pink October is about breast cancer. I know! It's the main theme. But why not to talk about cancer in general and children cancer awareness?! I know there is the Child Cancer Awareness Month in September. But the theme is not include into school curricula.

It's funny and inspiring movie at the same time. Truly loved it! May teachers include it and explore it into their lessons. You have the time. And students will understand the feeling of a young lady who have cancer.

This movie is actually very personal and bittersweet for me. The character of Abigail was based on a dear friend of mine, a student, who died of cancer. So for me it’s somewhat surreal that I see someone portraying a character based on her, and yet many of the people who watch the movie were not as blessed as I was to have the feeling of being her teacher and friend for several years until she was taken from us so young by complications from cancer at a tender age.

Teachers can teach students that many diseases, including some types of cancer, can be prevented through healthy lifestyle habits, such as eating well and maintaining a moderate level of regular physical activity. 

That can be presented through a series of games and activities that advocated eating well as part of a balanced lifestyle.
