The Tokyo 2020 officially opened on July 23, 2021 with the traditional Olympic Games Opening Ceremony seen by three billion people around the world.

Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games started on 23 July 2021 and will end during Summer season in Europe and some other continents, next 08 August 2021.

In the United States and other countries, the students would come back to school but we are not sure about in-person lessons due the difficult pandemic time. However students and teachers could follow on national television Tokyo 2020. They will be talking about their heroes, the athletes from different sports. 

Teachers are already preparing their in-person lessons or distance learning and they will include the Olympic Games and sport values into school curricula, for sure. They can't lose this wonderful experience! Such a great resource for different curricula. 

Games Vision are the most innovative in history. It brought positive reform to the world by building on three core concepts:

• "Striving for your personal best” (Achieving Personal Best), 

• “Accepting one another” (Unity in Diversity) and 

• “Passing on Legacy for the future” (Connecting to Tomorrow). 

Under the tagline, “Know Differences, Show Differences”, Diversity & Inclusion (D&I) is essential to achieving the Games Vision and delivering successful Games. As such, D&I is being incorporated into all the aspects of Games planning and operations.

Tokyo 2020 embraced ‘Diversity’ by celebrating the differences of individuals, while ‘Inclusion’ saw people accepted and respected regardless of age, ethnicity, nationality, gender, sexual orientation, religious beliefs or intellectual or physical impairment.

So, The Olympics may be thought mostly to be the preserve of the young - from 12 Syria’s Hend Zaza to  - but there are some sports where experience brings an advantage - to 66. The Australian equestrian Mary Hanna is 66 – the oldest competitor at Tokyo 2020, her sixth Games.

• Olympic games : Some information:

The first edition of the modern Olympic Games was staged in Athens, Greece, in 1896, while the first winter edition was held in Chamonix, France, in 1924. 

Since 1994, the Olympic Games have alternated between a summer and winter edition every two years within the four-year period of each Olympiad.

The Olympic Truce was reintroduced at the modern games in 1994, and it remains an ideal of the Olympic movement, with a related UN resolution passed every two years before each Olympics.

More than half a century later, the many legacies of Tokyo 1964 are still being felt. Despite taking place in an unprecedented context of a pandemic, Tokyo 2020 aimed to make a similar impact on the lives of the Japanese public.

New technologies and digital innovation have enabled more sports fans than ever to watch, follow and engage with the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020. Since the start of the Games, the Olympic digital platforms have had record breaking traffic – double the number of users during Rio 2016 on a daily basis.

Education:

Every four years, the Olympic Games create worldwide excitement as athletes from across the globe compete for a prestigious place on the podium. With stories of hard-work, determination, sacrifice, Olympians are great role models for students of any age to show that practice, practice, practice is the way to achieve their goals. 

From sports to geography, I picked some of the best Olympic-themed teaching resources to help you encourage both individual achievement and teamwork, while inspiring your students to strive for gold in the classroom. Wow! It will be amazing.

I am sure that a lot of students will want to talk about it. Japanese students are the luckiest because some of them are at the Olympic stadium with their parents watching live or participating as volunteers.

But there will be a big number all over the world that are watching live on television or on the Internet day by day, following their favorite athletes and sports. And the most curious will know a lot about OG sharing ideas in-person lessons or distance learning.

Teachers have been watching Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games as well, and they are wondering how they might include the OG into the curriculum if they are teaching at this time of the year. Pandemic Covid-19 changed a lot time of school teaching as we all know.

As I wrote, I will share with educators some subjects that might interest them for now and/or next school season. Tokyo 2020 is a very good subject. Values in sport too. 

You will find on this post some resources that teachers can include into their lesson plans by Zoom or in-person.

Saving the Planet : recycling & reuse

To produce the Olympic medals, The Tokyo Organizing Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (Tokyo 2020) conducted the “Tokyo 2020 Medal Project” to collect small electronic devices such as used mobile phones from all over Japan. 

This project makes Tokyo 2020 the first in the history of the Olympic and Paralympic Games to involve citizens in the production of medals, and to manufacture the medals using recycled metals.

Athletes checking into their rooms at the Tokyo Olympic Village discovered single mattress on a cardboard frame. Wow! The cardboard beds are very real. The beds were planned for the Tokyo Olympics as a recycling initiative, long before the spread of COVID-19. 

To address global greenhouse gas emission, Japan’s 2020 Olympic and Paralympic teams will wear official sportswear made from donated, recycled textiles.

Nature: Victory bouquets:

The Olympic Games, Tokyo 2020 will be the first time since London 2012 that a host city will use victory bouquets, and they hold great significance too. The flowers used for the bouquets for Tokyo 2020 are grown mainly in areas affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011

The Parade of Nations, a lengthy process in which all 11,260 athletes taking part in the Games enter an arena, has been accompanied by orchestral renditions of music from video games developed in Japan.

For the second time, the International Olympic Committee Refugee OlympicTeam will participate under the Olympic flag in the Olympic Games in Tokyo, acting as a powerful symbol of inclusion and our shared humanity.

The Refugee Olympic Team (EOR) is participating at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 with 29 athletes, from 11 countries, competing in 12 sports.

"Respect and love are the core values we teach in school.  We must increase the children’s range of skills”, said Luiz Dias Junior, a teacher of CIEP (Integrated Centre for Public Education in Portuguese) Oswald de Andrade in Parque Anchieta neighbourhood, in Rio’s North Zone.

Rio 2016 officially opened on Friday 5 August with the traditional Olympic Games opening ceremony seen by three billion people around the world. More than 35,000 professionals will be involved on the night with the show featuring 12 samba schools and over 5,500 costumes.

More than 200 countries and  11 436 athletes compete in the 2016 Rio Games.

The event features 42 sport disciplines and 306 events. While athletics, gymnastics, and swimming have been around since the first Olympic games in 1896, other sports are making their first appearance this year. 

Be on the lookout for golf, which will be featured after a 112-year long hiatus, as well as newer sports like taekwondo and rugby sevens.

Olympic Games 2016 will end the 21 August. Schools in Europe are closed enjoying summer breack. 

In the United States, Australia and other countries, school started some days ago. Other countries or European countries, school will begin after the Olympic Games. However students will be back talking about their heros, the athletes in the different sports.

There is a Refugee Olympic Team warmed applauded at the opening night. At Rio2016, 10 refugee athletes from four countries will compete together as the Refugee Olympic Team. Among them are two swimmers, two judokas, a marathoner and five medium-distance runners.

This August the first-ever Refugee Olympic Team will compete at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Teachers could use Doodles or Google Fruit Game (very healthy)  to start a lesson in Sports curriculum inviting the students to explore the page and find all the stories about the games. It might be a simple but good motivation for cross-curricula projects.

• Sports & healthy fruit : To take it a step further, you might ask students to investigate why Brazil has so many good tropical fruit; why a country produces exceptional athletes in a given sport. For example, you might challenge students to find out why United States are strong in swimming or China in athletics.

Introduce your students the historic sporting event with this presentation, which delves into Ancient Greek traditions and how the Games were reinvented as the modern Olympics.

During the Games, you have the Official Rio 2016 website for a research and to get inspiration by news or stories to motivate your students in your lessons.

• Mathematics:

Engage reluctant students with a competitive resource where they race against each other to complete questions on a variety of topics, with marks given for quality of work.

Finally, the great Brazilian hero Ayrton Senna. Senna is more than a Formula 1 racer. For Brazilians, he is a hero, an icon of overcoming hardship, stubbornness and good character. 

Sadly, he died young, in a race in 1994. But his legacy lives on. Part of this is thanks to the Senna family who opened an NGO called Instituto Ayrton Senna. The mission? To help in the education of Brazilian poor children and keep the image of Ayrton Senna alive.

For the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, the Instituto Ayrton Senna, together with JWT and us (Le Cube), have prepared a beautiful message from Senna to all the Brazilian olympic athletes, pointing out the importance of winning at home. Ayrton Senna lost eight times before winning the Brazilian GP, and when he did, it was with a lot of effort. Still he faced it unflinchingly.

Brazilian Olympic athletes carry Senna's message on their wrists. On the Pulse of Brazil campaign "will give athletes an extra boost to fight for medals in what is sure to be the most important competition in their careers”,
