Millions of children go to sleep on Christmas Eve, excitedly awaiting the delivery of their presents from Santa Claus.

The most wonderful time of year is nearly here, with less than two days to go until Christmas Day. During the festive season, millions of children count down the days of December and go to sleep on Christmas Eve, excitedly awaiting the delivery of their Christmas gifts from the beloved Santa Claus.

From the history behind NORAD’s holiday role to finding out what time you can expect an appearance down your chimney, here is everything you need to know about Santa’s busiest night of the year.

Throughout the year, the US and Canadian organisation NORAD, monitors aerospace in event of nuclear attack, but when Christmas Eve comes around they monitor the skies for Santa’s sleigh.

Every year, the NORAD Tracks Santa website receives nearly nine million unique visitors from more than 200 countries and territories across the globe who are keen to follow Santa on his journey
On December 24, 1,500 volunteers respond to emails and receive more than 140,000 calls regarding Santa’s exact whereabouts.

The festive website was launched on December 1, with a holiday countdown, games and activities, a code lab, a Santa selfie, holiday traditions and so much more, all available in a range of languages.
Education:

There is so much fun! Both are so creative! However there is some learning too. Traditions, geography, local music, games, coding, languages (it will depend of the language kids decide to interact).
Christmas books:
Of course, you have the classical books as Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens The Story of The Nutcracker by E.T.A Hoffmann, A Noite de Natal by Sophia Mello Breyner.
This year, here some children's books in different languages:

English language:

How the Grinch Stole Christmas!
Dr. Seuss

How the Grinch Stole Christmas! is a children's story by Theodor "Dr. Seuss" Geisel written in rhymed verse with illustrations by the author. It follows the Grinch, a grumpy, solitary creature who attempts to put an end to Christmas by stealing Christmas-themed items from the homes of the nearby town Whoville on Christmas Eve. Miraculously, the Grinch realizes that Christmas may not all be about money and presents.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas!
Dr. Seuss

The story was published as a book by Random House in 1957. The book criticizes the commercialization of Christmas.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas!
Chuck Jones, 1966

The book has been adapted as a 1966 animated TV film starring Boris Karloff, a 2000 live-action feature film starring Jim Carey, and a 2018 American 3D computer-animated Christmas comedy Dr Seuss's The Grinch, by Yarrow Cheney and narrated by Pharrell Williams

“Every Who down in Who-ville liked Christmas a lot ... but the Grinch, who lived just north of Who-ville, did NOT!” Not since “’Twas the night before Christmas” has the beginning of a Christmas tale been so instantly recognizable.
No holiday season is complete without the Grinch, Max, Cindy-Lou, and all the residents of Who-ville, in this heartwarming story about the effects of the Christmas spirit on even the smallest and coldest of hearts.

We Met in December
Rosie Curtis

Two people. One house. A year that changes everything.
Twenty-nine-year-old Jess is following her dream and moving to London. It’s December, and she’s taking a room in a crumbling, but grand, Notting Hill house-share with four virtual strangers. On her first night, Jess meets Alex, the guy sharing her floor, at a Christmas dinner hosted by her landlord. They don’t kiss, but as far as Jess is concerned the connection is clear. She starts planning how they will knock down the wall between them to spend more time together.

La lettre de mon grand-père
Michael Morpugo
illustration: Jim Field

Schools : Let's talk Star Wars saga !

Star Wars The Force Awakens
J.J. Abraham, 2015

Star Wars : The Force Awakens comes in three days, the 18th December 2015. To us in Portugal comes the 16 December.

I began my career as a young teacher in 1977, when Star Wars: A New Hope was released I watched the movie with my students (Literature) on a big screen.

The movie begins : " A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away..." and then the explosion of music. Wow!

And just liked that we were sucked into an adventure we had never seen before.

A boy, a princess, an old man, and a pirate with Bigfoot as a friend. Thus began my life-long fascination with sci-fic with
Star Wars.

As a teacher I could understand the importance of making learning engaging to my students.

Star Wars, Indiana Jones or Back to the Future helped accomplish this as well Jules Verne novels.

Star Wars

Over the years I've used them to teach several topics, but my favorite is to use Star Wars to teach mythology and science fiction (the narrative) in Literature lessons.

Finally, with other students, time passes on, another classes, another young adolescents, we watched Return of the Jedi studying historical connections to be made studying literature novels.

Star Wars : The Force Awakens  is the first movie of the new trilogy not with George Lucas but with Walt Disney. The Force Awakens was announced to hit the box office on Dec. 18, 2015. Three days away from The Force Awakens.

The original cast
This film is going to show a new generation of Jedi knights and new storm troopers. There is going to be a new villain since the Emperor and Vader were killed in Return of  Jedi.

One surprise is that some of the original cast is returning. There will be appearances made by Harrison Ford's Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, Carrie Fisher’Princess Leia, and John Boyega’s Finn, Chewbacca.

Unfortunally, Princess Leia, Carrie Fisher died at the end of The Last Jedi

"Our princess, our general left us."

Carrie Fisher/ Princess Leia played the role of the Resistance’s leader with rare charm and considerable humility.

There is no Leia without her, and Star Wars will not the same without her. Of course, the princess turned General will now get an off-screen death in Episode IX. So sad!

Star Wars episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker
J.J. Abrams, 2019

In the riveting conclusion of the landmark Skywalker saga, new legends will be born-and the final battle for freedom is yet to come.

All the characters you have ever loved prepare to fight to the death against the Dark Side. But in spite of all the horror, this is Star Wars. And there is hope, always hope, and the power of the mysterious Force...

The first film of the new generation, The Force Awakens, was directed by J.J. Abrams, who was trusted with the successful reboot of another venerable space series: Star Trek, remember?

And now The Last Jedi is on theater since last Dec. 13, 2017. The excitingly eighth film of the great Star Wars saga written and directed by Rian JohnsonIt's the second film in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, following Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015).

Star Wars The Last Jedi
Rian Johnson,2017

The plot follows Rey as she receives Jedi training from Luke Skywalker in hopes of turning the tide for the Resistance in the continued fight against Kylo Ren and the First Order.

The Last Jedi offers "colossal confrontations, towering indecisions and teetering temptations, spectacular immolations, huge military engagements, and very small disappointments."

Peter Bradshaw, Guardian critic

Star Wars The Last Jedi
Rian Johnson, 2017

"We had such a great time!"

Rian Johnson, director

According to Rian Johnson, the story begins immediately after the last scene of The Force Awakens. He had his story group watch films for inspiration while developing ideas.

Education:

presented the exciting Star Wars: The Force Awakens in Portuguese (my mother language) as an invitation to my colleagues to include the movie into an interdisciplinary learning school project : science, literature, imagination (science-fiction) and arts.

You may introduce the StarWars movies to a new generation of light saber-wielding super fans. So how can they watch all the films if the school where you teach, don’t own them?

Your school library may have DVD copies that can be borrowed. If that’s not possible for some or all of the movies, you ask friends, students parents, you know somebody who owns them all, though perhaps only on VHS. There are huge fans who have all the films Star Wars saga.

If not, you have this video from a user of YouTube that compiled in three minutes Star Wars so far.

Go to  theater with your students to watch The Last Jedi, after the Christmas season. Don't miss the opportunity to watch such an epic adventure on a real screen.

On this post, based on the premise that students become actively involved in learning when the learning is relevant, imaginative and engaging, this movie will provide something for students of all ages. For all, it's a chance to see themselves as the hero's that they already are or hope to be.

Through interactive resources, they will become immersed in science history and cultural studies - literature, arts, music - as they will explore that famous galaxy. Beyond the movie we can create interesting and successful interdisciplinary projects as I wrote.

Resources:

Walt Disney offers on the Star Wars website some interesting tools (not all of them (there is a lot of marchandising), but you can visit it and a make a pre-selection of the resources that can be explored to include into your lessons after Christmas seasons. Wow! I preview great lessons!

  • Quiz Which Star Wars The Last Jedi are the fans?
It may be time for the Jedi to end, but the quiz experience will just begins.
Students like this resource and have a new poster to join to their Star Wars collection
  • Heroes Star Wars The Last Jedi
Students can browse the different episodes (videos)

Games & apps:

Star Wars Rebels 2

Of course there are games and apps for all ages. Students love to learn by playing. So do a research on the website and select the games or apps according to the age of students and level you are teaching.

There are games and apps for different ages and level you are teaching.

Other Resources:

The Guardian also display some interactive resources that you can visualize and consider to include into your lessons:

Music:

The movie also boasted a spectacular soundtrack from composer John Williams. You can ask your colleague the Music teacher to introduce this masterpiece into a lesson or two

The Last Jedi offers as well variations on the poweful orchestral themes of the original trilogy, "switching occasionally to muted tones and minor keys, before cranking the volume back up. This auto-reference has become an accepted and exhilarating part of the new Star Wars rhetoric."
