The sixth annual International Jazz Day, is celebrated worldwide on April 30, 2017.
International Jazz Day celebrates jazz music as a tool for making connections between people around the world. Through the magic of collective improvisation, jazz allows both listeners and performers to get to know each other, no matter their language or what country or culture they come from.

Havana, Cuba, will serve as the International Jazz Day 2017 Global Host City.

Many acclaimed musicians and educators from Cuba and around the world will participate in free jazz performances, master classes, improvisational workshops, jam sessions and community outreach initiatives.
Programs will take place at schools, arts venues, community centers, jazz clubs and parks across the city of Havana and throughout Cuba beginning on Monday, April 24th and leading up to the festivities on April 30th.
Additionally, jazz history and education programs will be provided for tens of thousands of students in over 11,000 schools across Cuba. These programs will be among the thousands of International Jazz Day live performances, educational activities, and community service programs taking place in more than 190 countries on all continents.
The day will culminate with an All-Star Global Concert presented at the Gran Teatro de La Habana Alicia Alonso, under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture of Cuba, the Cuban Institute of Music and the Cuban National Commission for UNESCO.
The concert will be live streamed by UNESCO and will feature an extraordinary array of artists from around the world paying tribute to the international art form of jazz.

Since 2012, the 1st International Jazz Day, Vocational Jazz Education has a voice! Musicians, educators, students of schools Jazz from around the world can celebrate the recognition of the Music they teach and learn.
They will embrace the opportunity to foster greater appreciation not only for the music but also for the contribution it can make to building more inclusive societies.
UNESCO invite students and schools from around the world to join in the celebration of International Jazz Day and play at the schools concerts.
- Some possible activities to teachers and students:
- Play jazz recordings or video clips and have students write or share their reflections.
- Discuss how jazz inspires peace, unity, teamwork and communication.
- Organize a jazz-themed performance by your school band or choir. For example celebrate Ella Fitzgerald 100.
- Create a class mural or decorate your classroom with jazz-inspired drawings or posters (of instruments or musicians, for example).
- Explore the mathematical basis of the swing rhythm.
- Research the history of jazz in your town or city. What makes jazz in your area unique?
- Develop your own lesson plan centered around jazz – and let us know how it turns out!
