10 December 2023 marks the 75th anniversary of one of the world's most groundbreaking global pledges: the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). 

This landmark document enshrines the inalienable rights that everyone is entitled to as a human being - regardless of race, colour, religion, sex, language, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status.

The Declaration was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in Paris on 10 December 1948 and sets out, for the first time, fundamental human rights to be universally protected.  

The year-long Human Rights 75 initiative seeks to shift the needle of understanding and action towards greater knowledge of the universality of the UDHR and the activism associated with it.

• Theme 2023 : Freedom, Equality  and Justice for All 

In the (nearly) 75 years since the proclamation of the UDHR, human rights have advanced. However, progress does not mean the fight for rights and equality ever ends. 

On Human Rights Day, 10 December 2023, we will celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Declaration, a milestone celebration called Human Rights 75 (HR 75). Human Rights Day will capture all the moments from this year’s commemoration and seeks to increase knowledge on the universality and indivisibility of human rights, especially among young people, inspire people to create a movement of shared humanity while empowering them to fight for their rights and take action.

Human rights gain new meaning when they become a reality in the daily life of every single person in the world.

Motivate your students to join UDHR/ UN on the 75-day countdown to Human Rights Day on 10 December. Each day we'll be sharing stories, videos, fun facts and more to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Declaration.

If there was ever a moment to rekindle the hope of human rights for every person, it is now. And this moment will last throughout 2023 and beyond – a year of commemoration of one of the world’s most ground-breaking international commitments. 

The UDHR calls upon everybody to stand up for human rights. We all have a role to play.

Cross-curricular : Civics; History; Languages; Geography; Arts ; Sports ; History Music.

Level: All levels. You must adapt the resources and activities to the age and level you are teaching.

And the Academy Award®-winning filmmaker Guillermo del Toro who reinvented the classic tale Pinocchio the wooden marionette who is magically brought to life in order to mend the heart of a grieving woodcarver named Geppetto take the Golden Globe for best animated motion picture a first in the category for a streaming service during last night’s ceremony.

Del Toro in his speech saluted the work of the crew and cast saying:

"We gave life and beauty and truth to a tale about life, loss and belonging.”

It's the first time a film streaming won a Golden Globe. As you know if you read my publication Schools: Guillermo Del Toro's Pinocchio, a animated musical fantasy the long animation was  acquired produced by Netflix Animation and streamed on Netflix since December 2022.

As I wrote, animated movies are excellent educational digital resources to motivate and inspire your students to read and breathe new life into your curriculum!

However, as Del Toro said, "animation is not a gender for kids, it's a medium", teachers decide carefully which students or level they are teaching. And pay attention to age.

November in Review & Youth Stand Up for Human Rights !

Human Rights Day is observed every year on 10 December. It commemorates the day on which, in 1948, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. 

This year, it celebrates the contribution and promise of young people who change the world for the better.

"There are more adolescents and young adults alive today than at any other time in human history and they are generally better educated, healthier and have greater access to technology and information that can be leveraged to stand up for human rights."

Youth participation is essential to achieve sustainable development for all. Empowering youth to better know and claim their rights will generate global benefits.

This Human Rights Day highlights the role of young people and their participation in social movements to stand up for human rights and bring change.
