Do you believe in the power of sport? Have you seen the impact of sport values in your community or school?

UNESCO has launched a photo contest that showcases the unifying Power and Values of Sport. 

• Aims:

Sport values such as fairness, equity, respect, or inclusion, can equip young people with the knowledge and skills needed to tackle 21st century challenges. 

Engagement in targeted sport-values education programmes contributes to the development of self-confidence, healthy lifestyle choices, life skills, and an understanding of rights.

Sports provide us with beautiful, jaw-dropping photography. Pictures have an incredible ability to capture - in instant shot - those unique values that sport entails. 

• Target:

UNESCO invites professionnals and amateurs to send one photo which captures the power of sport values and their impact on young people within your community. 

The best 15 photos will be published in a UNESCO photo book on sport values and exhibited at the Organization’s Headquarters.

Five winners will be invited to present how their photos illuminate the power of sport values. 

• Deadline:

Thursday 3 December 2015 at 12:00 GMT+1.

To participate, the photo must be sent to sportvalues(at)unesco.org along with a 150-200 words testimony/story in English, French or Spanish, explaining how sport values impact young people in your community, by Thursday 3 December 2015 at 12:00 GMT+1.

These are the words of the UN Secretary-General on the International Day of Sport for Development & Peace last May 2015

Due to its vast reach, unparalleled popularity and foundation of positive values, sport is ideally positioned to contribute towards the wolrd objectives for development and peace. 

We need this power more than ever today, after the 13 November in Paris to strengthen the grounds for more inclusive and sustainable development and lasting peace.

Please invite your students to participate in this contest sending a photo that they can shot in school or outside school.

Students must indicate the first and last name, together with their contact details and profession. 

• Photo composition and format:

• The photo must be dynamic and express movement;

• The photo must be in colour and in high resolution (minimum 300 dpi);

• Dimensions can either be portrait or landscape, and the format can be either portrait, photojournalism, street photos, or sport photos;

• Signatures, photographers’ names, or copyright notices should be submitted along with the photo;

• The photo must be sent by email, in digital format, as a .jpg file

• Contest winners:

A minimum of 5 winners and 10 runners-up will be selected. 

UNESCO will publish the results of the photo contest on Wednesday 9 December 2015. Winners and runners-up will be notified directly. 

The 5 winners will receive a Canon DSLR Camera and will be invited to an international event on Values Education through Sport (UNESCO Paris, France, 28-29 January 2016). Travel and accommodation will be borne by UNESCO.

• 1 Set of post-cards featuring the best photos;

• 1 branded T-shirt.

Sport and physical education are especially important for young people, for their health and civic engagement.

Sport has historically played an important role in all societies, be it in the form of competitive sport, physical activity or play. But one may wonder: what does sport have to do with peace?

Sport can no longer be considered a luxury within any society but is rather an important investment in the present and future, particularly in developing countries.

Sport is a pillar of a healthy society, at ease with itself, united in its diversity, based on human rights and equal dignity. It provides a field for passions to be shared, for communities to come together, for the disadvantaged to be empowered.
