The surprise? An indie game "Limbo". Limbo is a puzzle-platform video game and the premiere title of independent Danish game developer Playdead Studios. 

"Limbo has no spoken dialogue at all. And no cutscenes. And barely any real enemies, either. Instead it has a little boy, traversing a sombre world by running, jumping, pushing, pulling and climbing to solve spatial puzzles and make it through three broken, ruinous areas, where shortly-spaced checkpoints make death not a frustration, but a learning experience: Urging you to think laterally; teaching you to always be vigilant."                                

Watch the 10 nominees here and vote on your favorite game until March 14, 2011.

The ceremony will be streamed on the BAFTA website, live from the London  Hilton on Park Lane on 16 March 2011 from 8:30pm.

Last sunday night, February 13, composer Christopher Tin made video game history, becoming the first composer to win a Grammy Award for a song composed for a game.

Tin took home the 'Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocalist(s)' at the 53rd Grammy Awards in Los Angeles for his composition Baba Yetu, the opening track from Sid Meier's Civilization IV.

Tin also won the Grammy for 'Best Classical Crossover Album' for his debut album, Calling All Dawns, which also features the song "Baba Yetu."

The opening song Baba Yetu (feat. Soweto Gospel Choir) is well known to video game fans as the theme song to the popular game Civilization IV. 

Originally written for the game, it has since become a crossover hit outside of the video game industry, and has received close to 1000 live concert performances both from local and professional choirs, and as a staple of the Video Games Live concert tour.

The award is for the song as written for Tin's album Calling All Dawns, but the song was written for the opening credits of Civilization IV, which was released in 2005. That makes Baba Yetu the first video game song to ever win a Grammy.

The song has also enjoyed a place in the Video Games Live show. "The fact that this song has had a life outside of the game is owed almost entirely to Video Games Live. They were the first to bring this music to concert stages around the world and to places I had never dreamed possible," composer Christopher Tin stated.

Christopher Tin is, primarily, a composer for film, video games, and advertising. 'Calling All Dawns' is his first album.

A native Californian, Tin studied music at Stanford and Oxford universities before launching his career in film, television, advertising, and video game composition.

Water talks & Civics in school

Solidarités International is a humanitarian organisation which provides aid and assistance to victims of war or natural disaster. For 30 years the association has concentrated its action on meeting three vital needs - water, food and shelter.

Solidarités International are particularly committed to fighting water-borne diseases - the most frequent cause of death worldwide.

Education:

It's an excellent motivation to discuss humanitarian causes and volunteering as a civic value in different currivulum. 

2011 is the European Year of Volunteering. You could use my post 'Le droit à l'éducation' here to introduce the theme of young volunteering.

After watching the video 'Water talks', students could search about Solidarités International (English, French) and get more information. 

After a good discussion about volunteering, they could create a school page on jecollectepoursolidarites.org, after choosing the right action here

The Harry Potter films will receive the outstanding British contribution to cinema prize at this year's Bafta awards.

Potter author JK Rowling and producer David Heyman will receive the award on behalf of the franchise during the ceremony at London’s Royal Opera House on Sunday 13 February 2011.

JK Rowling's Harry Potter novels were on the the top 100 books of all time and of the last decade.

JK Rowling winned the new Danish award, the "Hans Christian Andersen literature prize", in 2010. His work was of that rare order that seems to transcend authorship," and praising Andersen's "indestructible, eternal characters."

Starting in 2001 with Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, the film franchise from Warner Bros. Pictures has defined a decade of British filmmaking. As well as continually introducing exciting new performers to a global audience, the films have built a reputation for showcasing the wealth of British stage and screen acting talent.

As well as notching up seven Oscar nominations, the series has so far garnered a total of 28 BAFTA nominations: five nominations at the British Academy Children’s Awards and 23 at the Film Awards, including this year’s two nominations in the Special Visual Effects and Make Up & Hair categories.

To date, the Potter movies have received seven Oscar nominations and 28 Bafta nominations.

Yes, it's true! Harry Potter's saga brought new generations of readers for schools. And that is important! 


Fans go to Harry Potter movies because they have read all the Harry Potter novels, the most time in school.


JK Rowling and Hans Christian Andersen could be a good motivation for reading in Literature & Languages curriculum. 


The two authors were in Portugal. J.k: Rowling lived there teaching English and Hans Christian Andersen loved Portugal.


Hans Christian Andersen in 1886. There is a wonderful virtual exhibition at the National Library of Portugal about Hans Christian Andersen's venue to Portugal. He wrote a book about his impressions and informed that Skruptudsen the children's story was written in Portugal


JK Rowling lived in Porto for some years, teaching English. It was there that she began a story that might become a book about a boy who is sent off to wizard school. All during the time she spent in Portugal, Rowling took notes on this story and added bits and pieces to the life of her main character, Harry Potter.


Activities for students:

• Watching the video and the virtual exhibition: debating the importance of the two authors in children's literature.

• In groups, recalling information about the two authors' venue to Portugal, exploring Google Earth and Google Maps.

• Choosing one novel of each author and making reading contests in school.
