Google is celebrating its 19th birthday today the 27th September. And in the most Google of ways: a Doodle that lets you play through the most fun Doodles ever.

Google is now 19 years. In 1997, one of Google’s co-founders, Larry Page, had just arrived at Stanford University to pursue his P.h.D in computer science. Of all the students on campus, Google’s other co-founder, Sergey Brin, was randomly assigned to show Page around. This chance encounter was the happy surprise that started it all.

Let's see the doodle. It has a huge lot of surprises and time-wasting little animations to play through. 

Using the Doodle is simple enough: you head to the Google homepage, click on the spinner, and opt either to play the option you've been given or have another go. But read on, because there's a major catch.

In some cases, they're actually better than the times they were Google Doodles. 

"They say life is full of surprises, and Google’s history is chock-full of them. In fact, we wouldn’t be here without them."

So I have selected some of the best of recent years, some are published on this blog. You will recognize the posts if you are an usual reader.

Google assembled some of them into the meta-Doodle, which lets students use a spinner to find which of the Doodles to play.

Among the games are old favourites such as Snake, the arcade game Pac Man and tic-tac-toe - as well as more recent additions such as Battle against spicy peppers, Earth day quiz or Help pangolins fall in love.  

Upon clicking today's Doodle, Google, invite your students to explore 19 surprises it has launched over the past 19 years. Share with students a different lesson by giving it a spin. They will enjoy and learn.

• DJ like a hip-hop star: One Doodle that isn't a game, this is still an incredibly interactive and fun resource. 

It's not only an entirely interactive set of decks that allow students to scratch and mix a range of tracks, it's also an educational and interesting trip through the beginnings of hip hop.

• Beethoven : 5th Symphony: Somewhere between a puzzle, a game and a musical experience, this lets students stitch together parts of Beethoven's famous work. 

Help Beethoven's unfortunate journey to the symphony hall by arranging his masterpieces in time for the big crescendo!

• Scoville scales: The Doodle was created to honour Wilbur Scoville, the man who created the measurements for how hot chilies are. And the game shows the scientist eating a chilli and then cooling his mouth down with ice cream. 

But that's where it all gets weird – students then taken to a strange game where they must throw ice cream at a chilli pepper with good enough timing to undo its heat. It's as fun as it is weird.  Students get to learn some great chili pepper facts on the way.

• Cricket cricket: This game, created to celebrate the ICC Champions Trophy, lets students play cricket as a literal cricket. Recalling the golden of stick cricket, it's incredibly addictive.

And there are so many more. 19 years, 19 surprises, 19 activities. Let your students enjoy such a fun-tastic resource and they will learn some interesting subjects by gaming.

Education:

My usual readers know I love doodles and games! And students love games into lessons.

Ok! Why not include doodles and games as interative educational resources into school curricula. I always include games into the school curricula and the results are better. And some years ago I felt in love with some awesome doodles. I wrote often about doodles.

Google is really stepping up its game this Surprise Spinner the Google's 19th anniversary and you might be wondering why not to invite students to enjoy 19 games and activities from Google Doodle.

Never fear to teach using games or doodles. So, you and your students will play this games with success, today. Students are better gamers than us, no? No problem. Give you a smile and some good laughs teaching and learning.

Photo Competition 2016 for Young - Hotter, Drier, Wetter. Face the Future.

WMO is holding a photo competition on the 2016 World Meteorological Day theme: “Hotter, drier, wetter. Face the Future.”

Theme:

The theme has been chosen to illustrate the reality of climate change. As a result of heat-trapping greenhouse gases in our atmosphere, land and sea surface temperatures are rising. The frequency and intensity of extreme events like heatwaves and heavy rainfall is increasing. Without urgent action to cut carbon dioxide emissions, this trend will accelerate.

Who can participate:

Young people are especially encouraged to submit photographs, but there is no age limitation. We are keen to encourage a good geographical balance of photos.

How to enter:

• Take a striking photo that meets our submission guidelines and captures weather extremes like heat, drought, heavy rain, snow and flood. It can also depict how we can prepare for future climate. Let your imagination run wild!

• Read  Terms and Conditions.

• Fill out the mandatory online ENTRY FORM and attach your photo. Don’t forget a short explanatory caption and location for your image!

• Want to e-mail your entry instead? No problem! Fill out the mandatory Entry Form with your photo attached and e-mail it to social@wmo.int.

Submission Guidelines:

• All photos must be a minimum size of 10cms to 15cms and in high resolution (minimum 300 DPI).

• All photos must be submitted in JPEG or TIFF format (with little compression to preserve image quality.

• Black and white photographs as well as coloured photographs will be accepted.

N.B. WMO will require a higher-resolution for shortlisted photographs of at least A3 (42 x 30 cm or 30 x 16.5 inches) at 300 dpi, minimum size of 9000 x 5000 in pixels.

All my usual readers know that I am a huge fan of Environmental education as a cross-curricular activity. There are so many posts about the theme on my blog!

Now, here an interesting contest outdoor. The WMO Photo competition invites everyone - students, photographers, young people who like photography, in every part of the world, to share photos that visually capture climate change.

Environmental and outdoor education play an important role for young students personal and academic growth. With students now spending 90% of their time indoors, “nature deficit disorder” is on the rise. 

Nature Deficit Disorder is not a medical condition - it describes our lack of a relationship to the environment. It hurts children, families, communities, and environment. Luckily, the cure starts in our own backyards, streets, nature parks.

Getting kids outside teaches them about the world around them and gives them an appreciation for nature while providing an opportunity for sunshine and exercise.

It would be interesting if teachers motivate their students to understand the reasons of climate change.

The contest could be a creative actvity to introduce in different curriculum or even better as a cross-curricular project.

Target : All levels (teachers must ask for parents help with young kids).

Curriculum : Science ; Geography ; Languages, Arts (Photography).
