Science & Education : The Great Conjunction Jupiter/Saturn : reources

It seems Jupiter and Saturn have decided to put on quite an unusual show for the world to see on the first day of Winter, Northern Hemisphere. The fact that this event is happening during the winter solstice is pure coincidence, according to NASA.

The two largest planets in our solar system are coming closer together than they have been since the Middle Ages, and it's happening just in time for Christmas, the nickname of the "Christmas Star." 

Astronomers are gearing up for a heavenly spectacle when Jupiter and Saturn huddle closer together in the evening sky than they have for nearly 400 years.

Jupiter and Saturn will align in this night sky December 21  an event astronomers call the "great conjunction" - also referred to as the "Christmas Star", marking the planets' closest encounter in nearly 400 years.

The celestial event will play out tody when the solar system’s two largest planets appear side by side in a “great conjunction” above the horizon soon after sunset.

As Earth’s Northern Hemisphere hunkers down for winter and its longest night of the year, it seems Jupiter and Saturn have decided to put on quite an unusual show for the world to see! 

So what exactly is creating this celestial phenomenon? Based on their orbits, from our vantage point on Earth, Jupiter and Saturn will cross within .1 degrees of each other (a fraction of the width of the full moon), a once-in-a-lifetime rendezvous recreated in the Doodle artwork. But looks can be deceiving, as the two gas giants will actually remain a vast distance of approximately 450 million miles apart!

What has become known popularly as the “Christmas Star” is an especially vibrant planetary conjunction easily visible in the evening sky over the next two weeks as the bright planets Jupiter and Saturn come together, culminating on the night of Dec. 21.

In the distant past, such alignments of the planets were seen as portents of things to come, from great fires and floods to the birth of Christ and the ultimate collapse of civilisation.

The phenomenon has, consequently, been likened to the Biblical Christmas Star as described in the Gospel of Matthew.

Some astronomers also speculate the fabled Star of Bethlehem that led the Three Wise Men to the newly-born Jesus Christ may have been a Great Conjunction of the two gas giants.


When Saturn and Jupiter converge on December 21, the two planets may appear as a bright point of light that will be easily visible in the night sky. The two planets have slowly been moving closer to each other over the past few weeks.

“It’s really special to have Jupiter and Saturn visible so close together,” said Dr Emily Drabek-Maunder, an astronomer at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich. “It’s something that’s nice to go out and spot.”

A conjunction occurs when planets appear incredibly close to one another in the sky because they line up with Earth in their respective orbits.

  • Some information:

In 1610, Italian astronomer Galileo Galilei pointed his telescope to the night sky, discovering the four moons of Jupiter Io, Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto

In that same year, Galileo also discovered a strange oval surrounding Saturn, which later observations determined to be its rings. These discoveries changed how people understood the far reaches of our solar system.

“The cool thing is that Galileo first observed Jupiter and Saturn in 1610, which is 13 years before the last really close conjunction. But there is no record of anyone observing the 1623 conjunction through a telescope,” 

Thirteen years later, in 1623, the solar system’s two giant planets, Jupiter and Saturn, traveled together across the sky. Jupiter caught up to and passed Saturn, in an astronomical event known as a Great Conjunction

From our vantage point on Earth the huge gas giants will appear very close together, but they will remain hundreds of millions of miles apart in space. And while the conjunction is happening on the same day as the winter solstice, the timing is merely a coincidence, based on the orbits of the planets and the tilt of the Earth.

“You can imagine the solar system to be a racetrack, with each of the planets as a runner in their own lane and the Earth toward the center of the stadium,” (...) “From our vantage point, we’ll be able to be to see Jupiter on the inside lane, approaching Saturn all month and finally overtaking it on December 21.”

The planets regularly appear to pass each other in the solar system, with the positions of Jupiter and Saturn being aligned in the sky about once every 20 years.




This year, the planets will appear in the sky one-fifth of the width of a full moon apart. The event coincides with the winter solstice, when the tilt of the northern hemisphere away from the sun produces the shortest day and the longest night.

“The date of the conjunction is determined by the positions of Jupiter, Saturn, and the Earth in their paths around the Sun, while the date of the solstice is determined by the tilt of Earth’s axis. The solstice is the longest night of the year, so this rare coincidence will give people a great chance to go outside and see the solar system.”

  • How & where to watch?

Jupiter and Saturn are bright, so they can be seen in areas with clear skies and no cloud cover, and even from most cities. This also means that the event can be seen with the naked eye. However, binoculars or a small telescope may allow viewers to see Jupiter's four large moons, according to the statement. 


Education: 

Impossible kids with their families, the oldest in a skywatchers group will go to admire such a awesome event.

We are all excited about the Geminids shower. Science teachers, and families.

Do you remember the Geminids shower first days of December? What a sky show full of stars. 

But this is quite exceptional! Christmas Star or the Great Conjunction!

Now teachers and students are on Christmas holiday. I'm sure science teachers told their students to register the moment

Schools : Women in Science, Caroline Herschel, the astronomer !

Long before women were allowed to become Fellows of the Royal Society, or obtain university degrees, one woman managed to get her voice heard, her discovery verified and her achievement celebrated. That woman was Caroline Herschel, who managed to find ways to fit comet discoveries into her domestic life, and present them in ways that were socially acceptable.

Caroline Herschel made a significant contribution to the field of Astronomy. She discovered her comets at a time when astronomers were mainly concerned with position, identifying where things were and how they were moving.

On this day, the 16th March was born Anna Atkins, a botanist and first woman photographer. Google honored Anna Atkins, last year, 2015.

Today’s Google doodle is dedicate to another woman in science, born on the same day. Caroline Herschel, a German astronomer. It would have been her 266th birthday.

Herschel was a keen observer of the universe. She discovered hundreds of stars, eight comets (six of which still bear her name), and became the first female astronomer enlisted by the British monarchy. 

Caroline Herschel made a significant contribution to the field of Astronomy. NASA has a special page honoring her contribution.

The Herschel’s remarkable scientific achievements include the publication of Catalogue of Stars and a Gold Medal from the Royal Astronomical Society.

Caroline Lucretia Herschel was born 
as Karoline Lucretia Herschel in Hannover, Germany on 16 March 1750. One of a large family, she was the eighth child and the fourth daughter. The family was very musical, and her older brother, William, eventually moved to England to work as a music teacher and organist. At the age of 22, Caroline moved with him to train as a singer. She sang as a soprano in a number of performances.

In 1772, she left Germany and came to live in England with her brother William Herschel who discovered the planet Uranus in 1781.

Caroline was a significant astronomer in her own right. Assisting her brother in his celestial pursuits, Caroline herself became fascinated by the night sky. They made telescopes together in their spare time, and the two took a deep interest in astronomy and observational cosmology. They also catalogued the celestial realms.

Caroline frequently used a small Newtonian sweeper to study the sky on her own. On Feb. 26, 1783, Caroline discovered an open cluster known today as NGC 2360. She went on to discover 14 new nebulae, including NGC 205, the companion to the Andromeda Galaxy

Then, in the summer of 1786, she made a discovery that no woman had made before her - she discovered a comet. 

On August 1, 1786, Caroline made a discovery that no woman had made before her. She discovered a comet. She identified an object traveling slowly through the night sky. She observed it again the next night and immediately alerted other astronomers by mail to announce her discovery and inform them of its path so that they could study it.

Caroline Herschel turned her free time toward the sky, and went on to discover
seven other comets over the next decade. 

She also cross-indexed the existing star catalog compiled by England's first "astronomer royal" John Flamsteed, submitting more than 550 stars that had not been included in the original version.

Her name has been bestowed on the comet 35P/Herschel-Rigollet, the asteroid 281 Lucretia (after her middle name), and the lunar crater C. Herschel.

She published a catalogue of stars in 1798 through the Royal Society, which significantly updated and corrected the one published by the first astronomer royal, John Flamsteed, in 1725.

For her endeavors, Caroline was honored in 1828 with the Royal Astronomical Society’s Gold Medal, the first woman to receive the prize. It wouldn't be awarded to another woman until 1996, to Vera Rubin

She granted an honorary membership in 1835. Herschel was also the first woman to be paid for her contribution to science for the discovery of six new comets. In 1787, King George III officially employed her as William's assistant, providing her with a modest salary.

She also became an honorary member of the Royal Irish Academy in 1838, and received the Gold Medal for science from the King of Prussia in 1846, a year before her death. She died in Hanover, Germany, on January 9, 1848.

It was given to her "in recognition of the valuable services rendered to Astronomy by you, as the fellow-worker of your immortal brother, Sir William Herschel, by discoveries, observations, and laborious calculations". 

The Herschel became experts at tracking them down, seeing themselves as the astronomical equivalent of botanists who catalogued exotic plants in far-off lands.
"Remembering their life in 19 New King Street – the home of the Herschel Museum of Astronomy – Caroline noted that ‘almost every room in the house turned into a workshop’  with William ‘grinding glasses and turning eye pieces’ to build his famous telescopes."

Caroline was a tiny woman, as the dress on display at the museum attests. Only 4ft 3 inches in height, her tiny frame was blamed on typhus stunting her growth when she was 10. 
Yet she proved hardy in the face of long nights observing in the cold and lived until she was 97.

Caroline Herschel died on Jan. 9, 1848. She penned the inscription on her tombstone, which reads:

"The eyes of her who is glorified here below turned to the starry heavens."

Education:

Caroline Herschel became expert at tracking stars and comets as the astronomical equivalent of the botanist Anna Atkins who catalogued exotic plants in far-off lands.

The discussion of new discoveries and a better understanding of the role of women in science, is an important aim. 

Girls and women are more and more proving in different situations at school and in business that they are equal to men in the intelligence and capacity. Don't forget to talk about it with your students (girls).

So, constantly evolving education at all ages and levels in our ever-changing world is crucial. Very important in school education.
This begins early in school where girls must be encouraged to access to humanitiesscience and technology.

The aim is to encourage girls and young women creativity in the field of humanitiesscience, new technologies or arts and highlight the importance of developing innovative skills at their early age.

Include into school curricula the doodles of Caroline Herschel and Anna Atkins to talk about women in science who became so important in History.
