This International Children's Book Day, is the second year of children been read to by their parents and grandparents.  

The world continues suffering pandemic time. Covid-19 is everywhere. Schools are closed again in most countries, kids are at home schooling on remote learning by Zoom or TV school. Parents help the little ones schooling at home. And this lockdown week-end they could read some children books.

IBBY United States is the sponsor for International Children's Book Day 2021. The invited prominent author from the host country is cuban-american poet Margarita Engle who wrote the message to the children of the world and he well-known illustrator who designed the poster is the Brazilian illustrator Roger Mello.

When we read, our minds grow wings.

soaring songbirds and trumpeting elephants,

fantasies and true ones.

April 2 each year it's the time to read books, specially on this day, kids. It's their book day! 

Print, Prof. Naomi Baron said, makes it easier for parents and children to interact with language, questions and answers, what is called “dialogic reading.”

Any time that parents are able to engage with family reading time is good, using whatever medium works best for them, said Dr. Tiffany Munzer.

More than ever kids need the music of words to submit to the long lockdown without seeing their friends or going to school.

April 2 is also the World Autism Awareness Day. The fourteenth annual World Autism Awareness Day is April 2, 2021. "Throughout its history, the United Nations family has celebrated diversity and promoted the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities, including learning differences and developmental disabilities." International Children's Book Day 2015 at School : let's read !

Since 1967, on or around Hans Christian Andersen's birthday, 2 April, International Children's Book Day (ICBD) is celebrated to inspire a love of reading and to call attention to children's books.

Each year a different National Section of IBBY has the opportunity to be the international sponsor of ICBD. 

It decides upon a theme and invites a prominent author from the host country to write a message to the children of the world and a well-known illustrator to design a poster. 

These materials are used in different ways to promote books and reading. Many IBBY Sections promote ICBD through the media and organize activities in schools and public libraries. Often ICBD is linked to celebrations around children's books and other special events that may include encounters with authors and illustrators, writing competitions or announcements of book awards.

The theme 2015 is "Many Cultures One Story". The host country is UAE (United Arab Emirates)

The invited author is Marwa Obaid Rashid Al Aqroubi and the illustrator is Nasim Abaeian, the poster designer.

Education:

My usual readers know how I love reading. I often write about books, specially children books.  I am a huge fan of reading in school. As educators, we have an ubiquitous responsibility to encourage the love of reading in our students by exploring this wonderful and magical resource in our lessons, formal and informal learning. International Children's Book Day is a fantastic motivation to tell and demonstrate our students how reading can be a gift by stimulating the imagination and "offering creative solutions to obstacles that we will find along the way." The love of books and reading books are beautiful moments in Languages curricula, in the classroom or on blended learning.

Of course, today is the fay of reading by pleasure! Let your students read what they like the most. There are two reasons for this:

• One is benefiting those readers in your classroom that wish to read from you and need to let them be free. 

• Secondly, it is so you can reap the exponential rewards their choices offers. 

By inviting your students to go at the school library and choose a book to read aloud in the classroom will let them free to read a book they like.

As teachers, can we make every day an International Children's Book Day? Yes! We can! And those special days and awards are always a fantastic reason to do it.

As you know the 52nd edition of Bologna Children's Book Fair closed today, 2 April 2015. This year were in competition 1.250 books from 42 countries. Wow !

Portuguese authors and illustrators are among the winners. Lá Fora by two biologists, Maria Ana Peixe Dia and Inês Teixeira do Rosário, illustrations by Bernardo P. Carvalho wins the Bologna Ragazzi Award Opera Prima. Hoje sinto-me... text and illustrations by Madalena Moniz.

I hope you love the three children's books on this post. Students become better readers when their teachers love books and love to read. Believe me. It's a 'transmissible' pleasure easy to pass to our young readers. Even for those students that at the beginning are poor readers. Reading has a curative power as well.

Many students have growing up in my class reading fiction and poetry. We had great reading moments in formal learning and informal learning.

Some thoughts:

This year all these important subjects and special days happen on Spring break. So students are not at school. Holidays time.

No problem! All these activities can be developed every day. 

It occurred to me that there is a simple pedagogical principle that explains the appeal of very early learning, homeschooling, and reading began at home, with parents since childhood. But sometimes this is not possible. There are some poor readers among parents.

So educators are an important reference to students. We must valorize books and read a lot in the classroom. We can do a better job if we are rich readers.

Reading is a pleasant act that must start at kindergarten and must be continued along all school degrees.

Reading out loud is a pleasant way that students love the most. One important point: schools need more time for reading aloud, choosing new books, and sharing the pleasure of reading full books and not just excerpts. Teachers can make reading exciting hrough all school levels.

I quite agree about the stimulation and success of International Children's Book Day as well International Book Giving Day . 

These special events always generate huge enthusiasm to read to children and young people. Let's keep it every day!
