Organised by IBBY (The International Board on Books for Young People), different National sponsors are chosen each year to represent Children’s Book Day internationally.

IBBY Canada is the sponsor for International Children's Book Day 2022

  • The theme for International Children’s Book Day 2022 is:

Stories are wings that help you soar every day,

Written by celebrated author Richard Van Camp. This idea captures the power of children’s books to expand horizons, ignite the imagination and build understanding.

It is featured on a poster IBBY Canada has produced, in collaboration with Van Camp and illustrator Julie Flett, for IBBY sections around the world to use to promote books and reading.

  • Theme 2022:

"Stories are wings that help you soar every day."

Stories are wings that help you soar every day

Reading is freedom. Reading is breath.

Reading lets you see our world in a new way and it invites you into worlds you never want to leave.

Reading allows your spirit to dream.

They say books are friends for life and I agree.

The perfect universe of you only grows when you read.

Stories are wings that help you soar every day so find the books that speak to your spirit, to your heart, to your mind.

Stories are medicine. They heal. They comfort. They inspire. They teach.

Bless the storytellers and the readers and listeners. Bless books. They are medicine for a better, brighter world.

Mahsi cho. Thank you very much.

Education:

Taking part in International Children’s Book Day are synonymous with the benefits of reading as a whole. Here some of them:

  • Brain exercise - reading engages and exercises the brain, helping it to better make neural connections.
  • Vocabulary improvement - the amount of terminology that a child uses and possesses can increase with regular reading.
  • Empathy and imagination - reading opens children up to new horizons, helping them think outside the box and engage with the outside world in ways they had not done previously.
  • Morale improvement - it should not be forgotten that reading is fun! Taking part in it will boost a child’s morale and uplift their mood.

  • Activities:

In reality, all teachers and parents need to celebrate the day with a good old-fashioned story.

  • You could introduce different folktales from all over the world, marveling at the differences and similarities among them.

  • You could schedule storytelling activities based on beloved children's books. Maybe there's a class favourite you could even dramatise.

And, for older children, you could hold reading and creative writing workshops. You could even study the life of author and poet, Hans Christian Andersen on this day - talk about his work, choose a favourite and enjoy the story.

There is no better opportunity to discuss literacy, reading or a specific book with your children!

Hundreds of parents, grandparents or teachers shared their memories. Some mentioned books they were taught in school, while many others said they discovered their first beloved book at home or at the local library.

"Everything you look at can become a fairy tale and you can get a story from everything you touch."

Hans Christian Andersen
