The Museo Atlántico has been conceived as a place to promote education and preserve and protect the marine and natural environment as an integral part of the system of human values.

Jason deCaires Tayor, the artist and creator, sends us a latent message in his work: the defence of the oceans.

This museum project will create a huge artificial reef made up of a series of pH neutral cement sculptures which, over time, will help the marine biomass flourish and facilitate the reproduction of species on the island.

Tribute:

The Museo Atlantico is the first underwater museum in Europe. Located in the Canary Islands, it’s a monument to the thousands of – forgotten – refugees crossing the Mediterranean Sea.

Information:

The Museo Atlántico Lanzarote: Biosfera, Arte y Naturaleza, is a submarine work of art, made of sculptures of refugees – portrayed as shipwrecked people – trying to reach Europe, now lies off the coasts of Lanzarote, one of the Spanish islands of the Canaries.

The museum is 12 metres deep down pristine waters near the south coast of Lanzarote, in the Bahía de Las Coloradas, a place that was chosen mainly due to the physical characteristics of its sea bottom. It covers a 2,500-square-metre surface that divers and scuba divers will have access to.

The museum will be a tourist and cultural attraction.

The sculptures by the artist Jason deCaires Taylor make up Europe’s first underwater museum set to be open to public as of 25 February.

Other major projects include Museo Atlantico (2016), a collection over 300 submerged sculptures and architectural forms in Lanzarote, Spain, the first of its kind in European waters. The Rising Tide (2016 Thames London) and Ocean Atlas a monumental 60-ton single sculpture located in the Bahamas.

Education:

Art, and in turn the art gallery, has an essential role to play in fostering care and understanding of marine ecologies. Because of the brevity of most people’s exposure to our ocean environments, the concerns of the oceans fall from the forethought of people’s minds.

The main goal is to develop environmental and artistic culture, introducing other educational areas in the school programs, through a multidisciplinary perspective.

Therefore, exposure of a wider audience to marine ecologies combined with the educative function of galleries encourages prolonged thought on the condition of the environment and the role that humans can play in ensuring its continued health, or indeed its destruction.

Over the past few decades, we have lost over 40% of our natural coral reefs. Scientists predict a permanent demise of 80% by 2050.

Some thoughts on education:

As my usual readers know I make a lot of research online to discover new resources that can be adapted to the school curriculum.

It's not the first time I found wonderful things to share with teachers. Th internet has this awesome side. Discovering, learning, and disseminating beautiful ideas.

Jason deCaires Taylor is an artist who cares about environment. It's engaged to different causes: oceans, global warming, over fishing, tourism inpact.

On the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development what a better resource can we get to explore the themes into school curriculum?

Some objectives:

  • ‹To improve the understanding of how sustainable tourism contributes to the aforementioned five areas in both developing and developed countries ‹

  • To promote tools and mechanisms for the monitoring and the measurement of tourism’s positive and negative impacts.

The Museo Atlántico can be a beautiful school visit that teachers can prepared with the help of the students to do in Easter holiday or Summer holiday.

Environmental Education through Art puts "together environmental learning for the education and the development of skills and values that allow to re-evaluate behaviours and its consequences upon the environment in a broad perspective. It aims to develop in children biological, psychological, social and physical skills, using their creativity, expressiveness and conscience of aesthetic values, as well as moral and ethical, incorporating artistic fields of educational dancing, drama, fine arts and music. "

If you wish to discover the Museo Atlántico you must do so with a certified diving company. Diving companies have EDG-trained instructors (Eco Diver Guides).

Jason deCaires Taylor has created mysterious underwater worlds where art evolves as a consequence of the effects of nature. Greek mythology already used the ocean as a metaphor for the origins of humanity, embryonic waters, where gods such as Zeus and Aphrodite were born. Humans have developed surrounded by two third parts of a relatively unknown surface. In the context of arts, this underwater world has been physically untouchable to date, impossible to experiment with in its true essence. A gravity that is watery and private at once. A connection between humans and nature, present in the work of the artist, with a romantic and apocalyptic touch that questions our future.

Resources for Teachers:

Selected works

As a teacher who made some school educational field trips in Spring holiday and Summer holiday, I know how students love these activities.

I could experience the enthusiasm and encouragement, cultural, linguistic and environment skills learning of such a methodology.

As a trainer teahers who help practicioners, teachers to learn how to improve their own instructional practices and how to improve their lessons with creativity, I know how these activities may enriched their lessons.

Field trips are often an integral part of instructional practices and greatly benefit. Students learning by allowing them to engage with real-world environments.
