This Peace Day, Saturday 21 September 2019, marks 20 years since the launch of Peace Day.

"Peace One Day’s objective is to institutionalize Peace Day 21 September. Throughout 20 years, millions of people have been active on Peace Day in every country of the world, and hundreds of organizations have carried out life-saving activities in areas of conflict."

Peace One Day is a non-profit organization that was founded in 1999. In 2001 due to our efforts the member states of the United Nations unanimously adopted the first ever annual day of global ceasefire and non-violence on 21 September – Peace Day.

Theme 2019:

2019 sees the launch of Peace One Day’s new campaign “Cyber Non-violence”, seeking to decrease online hate speech, racism, bullying and ridicule, and hoping to see an increase in peaceful communication online.

Peace Day invite students, teachers, schools and youth organization all over the world to participate in this year’s focus youth project: ​#PeaceDay193​.

• Aim:

The ambition is - for the first time ever - to record young people committing to Peace Day across all ​193 UN Member States​. 

On Peace Day, 21 September, we will compile ​193 photos​ of young people (1 selected from each country) as an artistic installation at the flagship Peace Day celebration, in London. It will look incredible!

In a questionnaire among the Peace One Day Global Schools’ Network, more than two-thirds (68%) of responding schools stated that pupils act more peacefully on Peace Day (in comparison to any other school day).

Individual behavioral change is the platform upon which young people play an essential role in a much bigger story of positive progress. Through creative contribution, achievement through teamwork, and community development, young people understand - experientially - what it means to ‘make a difference’.

I'm sure teachers and schools have organized activities on Cyber non-violence throughout this school year that help raise awareness of Peace Day 21 September and encourage students, parents and other to join the campaign.

Choose to mark the day, this year, one day, before or after, because 21 September is on Saturday whatever the scale of their activity, their commitment matters. 

Invite your students to create public or private activities related to peace, and cyber non-violence to help spread the word about Peace Day and/or attend an event in their city or community.

September 21 is also UN International Day of Peace. Sustainable Development Goal 13 Climate Action is a call for immediate action by all to lower greenhouse emissions, build resilience and improve education on climate change.

The theme draws attention to the importance of combating climate change as a way to protect and promote peace throughout the world.

The International Day of Peace, also known as Peace Day, was brought into being by United Nations Resolutions in 1981 and 2001. International Peace One Day is celebrated on 21 September.

The Day’s theme for 2016 : “The Sustainable Development Goals: Building Blocks for Peace.”

The 17 Sustainable Development Goals were unanimously adopted by the 193 Member States of the United Nations at an historic summit of the world’s leaders in New York in September 2015. The new ambitious 2030 agenda calls on countries to begin efforts to achieve these goals over the next 15 years. It aims to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all.

Each year the International Day of Peace is observed around the world on 21 September. The General Assembly has declared this as a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, both within and among all nations and peoples.

The theme of this year’s commemoration is 

“Partnerships for Peace – Dignity for All” 

It aims to highlight the importance of all segments of society to work together to strive for peace.

The International Day of Peace was established in 1981 by resolution 36/67 of the United Nations General Assembly to coincide with its opening session, which was held annually on the third Tuesday of September. 

The first Peace Day was observed in September 1982. Since wars begin in the minds of women and men, it in the minds of women and men that the defences of peace must be constructed.

Celebrating International Day of Peace in schools is only a start to motivate students to practice a peaceful behaviour in school and along adult life. 

So, we must intregate the theme of peace every day, every moment in the curriculum we teach.

There's a new young generation of peace minds, believe me! Just look how the new generations are helping the refugees in some European countries. I'm proud of young generation of my country.

This is a matter of education in school and in the family. This is why,  they are open minds.

Ideas for activities with your students:

• Begin to ask students to make some research  on human rights in your country, comparing to other countries. They must use tablets, smartphones in the classroom;

• Create a webpage on the website of the school or on a personal blog to build a digital pledge on peace education. Ask students to help you. They have excellent ideas, some of them have good ICT skills...

• Surprise school teachers and students from different classes by organizing a flash-mob outdoor. Ask for help the teacher of Music;

• Choose a wall in the classroom or ask for a place at the school library for where students from different curricula can display their depictions of Peace through art works, street art, photography, storytelling, poetry ;

• Motivate your students to create some brochures, flyers, pins, to distribute in your school and community. Ask for the participation of your colleague of Arts curriculum;

• Organize an exhibition or a school newspaper including the best photos, drawings, texts (stories, poems, news) on the theme Peace;

• Set up information stands on Internet, social media (online newspapers, tv/ radio); social networks (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Google+) to raise school awareness on the issue;

• Ask students to choose a little theater play to play in the school library. Invite parents, other teachers, the maire, even students from a schoolnear yours;

• Display a movie on this theme in the classroom or in the school library, and invite teachers, parents, and other students to a round table discussion;
