Youth make up more than half of the global population and are an excellent engine for innovation, social change.

Yet many still face persistent barriers that hold them back from shaping the future they want — from poverty and inequality to limited access to quality education and decent work.

Because their lives and opportunities are directly shaped by education, young people can be active partners in reimagining learning works

As technology continues to transform the world, involving youth in co creating modern, relevant and inclusive education systems is essential to ensure teaching and learning truly meet their aspirations.

On 24 January, UNESCO marks the International Day of Education 2026 under the theme :

The power of youth in co-creating education.”

  • Why This Year’s Theme Matters ?

The 2026 theme, “The power of youth in co-creating education,” puts the spotlight on young people. It reminds them that education is not just something they receive, it is something they shape.

Education offers children a ladder out of poverty and a path to a promising future. But about 244 million children and adolescents around the world are out of school; 617 million children and adolescents cannot read and do basic math; less than 40% of girls in sub-Saharan Africa complete lower secondary school and some four million children and youth refugees are out of school. Their right to education is being violated and it is unacceptable.

Without inclusive and equitable quality education and lifelong opportunities for all, countries will not succeed in achieving gender equality and breaking the cycle of poverty that is leaving millions of children, youth and adults behind.

Education:

Youth under 30 make up more than half the world’s population, yet they remain underrepresented in education decision-making.

By participating in the International Day of Education, they will help build a global movement advocating for inclusive, relevant and youth-centered education systems.

Students and youth in co-creating the education they need is essential to meet their aspirations. This is particularly true at a time of transformation induced by the technological revolution, which calls for rethinking the purpose and modalities of teaching and learning.

It is easy to focus only on our own exams, grades, and qualifications and forget that education is also about broadening our minds, our hearts, and our awareness of the world around us.

As Malala Yousafzai says, “I truly believe the only way we can create global peace is through not only educating our minds, but our hearts and our souls.”

It is a reminder that real education is what makes us capable of noticing injustices, understanding others, and using our knowledge to create change.
