"On World Environment Day, the message is simple: reject single-use plastic. Refuse what you can’t re-use. Together, we can chart a path to a cleaner, greener world."

Secretary-General, António Guterres

Today is World Environment Day! It's a day to raise global awareness and to encourage people to take positive environmental action.

On June 5, 1974, the world first celebrated World Environment Day. The date was chosen by the United Nations to honor the 1972 UN Conference on the Human Environment, a landmark summit in conservation and environmental awareness.

The UN calls World Environment Day “the biggest day for positive environmental action.”

It's a day for public outreach as well as personal responsibility - an “opportunity to care for the Earth and become agents of change.”

Every year World Environment Day is hosted by a different country, where the official celebrations take place. 2018 was in India. 2023 is in Côte d'Ivoire

World Environment Day
Solution to Plastic Pollution

  • Theme 2018 & 2023:

"Beat Plastic Pollution." & "Solution to Plastic Pollution"

Each World Environment Day is organized around a theme that focuses attention on a particularly pressing environmental concern.
The theme for 2018 & 2023, Beat Plastic Pollution, is a call to action for all of us to come together to combat one of the great environmental challenges of our time.

The theme invites us all to consider how we can make changes in our everyday lives to reduce the heavy burden of plastic pollution on our natural places, our wildlife – and our own health.

While plastic has many valuable uses, we have become over-reliant on single-use or disposable plastic – with severe environmental consequences.

Education:

World Environment Day (WED) is also a day for people from all walks of life to come together to ensure a cleaner, greener and brighter outlook for themselves and future generations.

Here we are writing about Civics and Environmental education at schools. So important to help our students became engaged citizens.

Yes! Because World Environmental Day is not about a day! WED is about every day!

Schools have an important role. Educators must teach environmental values in different moments of their lessons, providing some thoughts and digital educational resources, educating young people for a sustainable future and inspiring them being a good example.

Of course you can't forget to invite your students to use their devices (iPad, smartphone, tablet) for developing interactive activities.

Students will evolve in creative green projects that they will share with colleagues, families, friends and pen-pals. They will become good young environmentalists.

Beat Plastic Pollution

  • The Global Game to Beat Plastic Pollution!

Do you remember playing tag as a kid? So do we.
This universal concept will be given an innovative twist for this year’s World Environment Day: We’re launching a global game of #BeatPlasticPollution Tag to showcase positive behavior change around how we consume plastic.
Here’s how to join the game. It takes just 30 seconds:
  • Choose which type of single-use plastic you’re ready to give up
  • Take a selfie (photo or video) showing yourself with the reusable alternative that you’re ready to embrace
  • Share your selfie on social media and “tag” three friends, businesses or high-profile people to challenge them to do the same within 24 hours. Be sure to use the #BeatPlasticPollution hashtag & mention @UNEnvironment

That’s it! You are amazing for helping to launch the global movement to #BeatPlasticPollution!
