World Book and Copyright Day is a celebration to promote the enjoyment of books and reading. Each year, on 23 April, celebrations take place all over the world to recognize the scope of books - a link between the past and the future, a bridge between generations and across cultures.

World Book Day and Copyright takes place today, with festivities such as the Catalan Sant Jordi – to mark Saint George's day, in honour of Catalonia's patron saint. 

World Book and Copyright Day is an opportunity to recognise the power of books to change our lives for the better and to support books and those who produce them.

As global symbols of social progress, books – learning and reading - have become targets for those who denigrate culture and education, who reject dialogue and tolerance. 

The 24th edition of World Book and Copyright Day will celebrate literature and reading while focusing particularly on the importance of enhancing and protecting Indigenous languages.

April 23 Shakespeare death and April 22 Cervantes death. It's a day when books are the centre of activities in schools and events all around the world. 

April 2nd is Christian Andersen's birthday and International Children's Book Day

Activities:

You will find different ideas and some funny activities to motivate your students to read and to love books on this blog.

You can also organize different events at your school: 

• Give a little flower to every student who enter at the school library to get a book or e-book to read! 

• Relay readings of books and plays; 

• Distribution of bookmarks; 

• Reading contests. Announcement of the winners of school literary competitions.

• Take this opportunity to let your students discover something new from what they're used to read. Surprise them! ;

• Ask your students to leave a book on a park bench, metro  or bus seat with a note saying “Happy Book and Copyright Day!”;

• Find out how to send students old books to schools and libraries in countries facing a post-disaster situation. Mozambique for exemple. They love this activity;

• Educate students on books pirating: respect for copyright encourages the dissemination of knowledge and rewards their creators and publishers;

• Educate them never throw away their books, getting them or the school involved in local community or online book swapping and donation campaigns and initiatives.

• Plan local reading events in schools and libraries and invite a famous guest to read. Authors are welcome at school, always;

I do love to read! My students love to read! But, most of all, I really believe that reading at school is a value to students' life and studies.

My usual readers knows I write so often on G-Souto's Blog about the importance of reading in school! I have a Master in Literature and Linguistics. So, humanities are my priority and I am a huge fan of books. No matter the format. However I prefer printed books. What can I say?

You will find so many posts about books, reading, literature in my blog! If you search you will find a great number of authors and books in English, French and Portuguese to different levels of education.

From Harry Potter to classical authors Leo Tolstoi, Lewis Carroll, Rimbaud, from science-fiction or comics. Teachesl find interesting resources.

And some good apps, animated films and games that involve students into learning the way they like. Using educational digital resources.

Earth Day is coming next 22 April. It's celebrated each year to remind each of us that the Earth and its ecosystems provide us with life and sustenance.

It began on April 22, 1970 – millions took to the streets to protest the negative effects of 150 years of industrialisation. In 2020 Earth Day will celebrate 50 years. Wow!

The Earth Day Network calls it "the anniversary of the birth of the modern environmental movement." True!

Nature’s gifts to our planet are the millions of species that we know and love, and many more that remain to be discovered. Unfortunately, human beings have irrevocably upset the balance of nature and, as a result, the world is facing the greatest rate of extinction since we lost the dinosaurs more than 60 million years ago. But unlike the fate of the dinosaurs, the rapid extinction of species in our world today is the result of human activity.

All living things have an intrinsic value, and each plays a unique role in the complex web of life. 

We must work together to protect endangered and threatened species: bees, coral reefs, elephants, giraffes, insects, whales and more.

Recognizing that Mother Earth is a common expression for the planet earth in a number of countries and regions, which reflects the interdependence that exists among human beings, other living species and the planet we all inhabit.

For Earth Day 2019, NASA invites students to celebrate the planet we call home with #PictureEarth social media event.

NASA studies Earth as a mission to let us know what’s happening to our home. Satellites and instruments #PictureEarth daily. 

Some take visible light photos, much like your camera. Others peer into the infrared, microwave and radio spectrums, which our human eyes can’t see. 

These images of Earth can be the width of an instrument’s path over the ground, a column of molecules in the air, the height of the ocean below, or even made up of signals emitted quietly from the surface.

Each satellite picture reveals a small detail of the land, water, atmosphere and life on Earth — a single brushstroke in the masterpiece that is our home planet.

Game of Thrones : Here's again the Narrative Text !

Tomorrow 14 April, we can finally look forward to the last instalment of Game of Thrones. It's been a long time coming, two years since the last season (March 2017), and nine years since the first episode premiered in 2011. But the epic conclusion will be worth it.

HBO released in November 2018 a short teaser video to announce the news, speeding briskly through the bloody, winding path to the final chapter of the story, summed up by the text: 

"Every battle. Every Betrayal. Every alliance. Every risk. Every fight. Every sacrifice. Every oath. Every death...is all #forthethrone."

Winter is coming, then... other winter is coming. It's official: the eighth and final season of Game of Thrones is coming April 14, 2019.

After seven seasons of the immensely popular fantasy drama, fans of the Westeros saga have been waiting to find out when they'll discover who will end up on the Iron Throne. When the final season airs now in April, it had been almost two years since the last season concluded in August 2017.

As I wrote, some years ago, a Narrative text lets us know something. It tells us what happened. It tells us a story. Our students love to hear narrations.

They strain to hear the latest news among their friends about what happened over the weekend and they rush to see the latest films that promise a good story! We know that! Look at movies, like Dumbo (children and teens) by the wonderful and creative Tim Burton, or After, some of the last teen films.

Movies based on children and teen books are an attractive and enjoyable digital resource to motivate students to read in school.

So, we can motivate young readers, presenting literary books trough movies. Gorgeous educational resource!

Take the exemple of Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins and Twilight Saga by Stephenie Meyer. Adolescents all over the the world were addict fans. First of the movies, after reading the books.

It's the same with Game of Thrones. The bestselling series, which began with Game of Thrones, inspired the popular HBO television series of the same name. 

It's the HBO series that inspired students to want to read the books. Movies or series offer teachers and students a nice captivating push! 

Some teen literature is difficult for the 'screen-generation' readers. Movies adaptation can help students to understand better those books, to appreciate and enjoy the book by having a different approach before... or after.

I'm sure you are reading in your lessons George R.R. Martin books. 

So teachers and students (high school and college) are excited for tomorrow 14 April.

Whether you're notching marks on your wall or rewatching the previous seven seasons of Game of Thrones in preparation for the series' April return, it really does feel like time is inching slowly by.

HBO trolled us even further by releasing brand new character posters on Twitter ahead of the eighth and final season, in which twenty of the major remaining character each sits on the Iron Throne. 

Wow! Students will love to scroll through the new character images and decide who looks best on the throne.

This a reminder that, with their on-set lockdowns and dragon-level security, there's no way we'll be able to tell who will rule Westeros at the end of the final seven episodes.

And while she's got the guts and noble blood to do it, I doubt Arya would want to be the queen. 

Or is the network trying to play with our expectations, suggesting a few different people will take the throne at some point during the final season?

The most eyebrow-raising inclusion here, though, is probably the Night King. The frosty villain is a fan favorite to prevail at the end of the series.

There has been very little information about the plot of season 8. We can surmise that it will finally reveal who will finally sit atop the Iron Throne (if it isn't destroyed by the Night King's army first).


A prequel?

But don't be said! Winter is coming, and so is the final seven episodes season of HBO's hit fantasy drama Game of Thrones. 

If you and your students are not quite ready to exit the world of Westeros, HBO announced plans to develop a Game of Thrones prequel, slated to arrive sometime in 2020.

And George R.R. Martin, the "mastermind behind the world of Westeros" announced via Twitter that the Game of Thrones spin-off will be titled The Long Night.

And today, 16 July, we knew that Game of Thrones leads this year’s Emmy nominations with a record 32 nods. Wow! Thus, the final season received mixed reviews from critics. The worst critics came from the fans.

The America’s Television Academy placed fantasy hit Game of Thrones at the top of this year’s long list of shows, with recognition for actors Kit Harington as Jon Snow and Emilia Clarke as Daenerys Targaryen in the categories of lead actor and actress in a drama series as well as seven further actors - Alfie Allen, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Peter Dinklage, Gwendoline Christie, Lena Headey, Sophie Turner, Maisie Williams - in the two support categories. 

Last year, this epic fiction reigned supreme with seven awards, including for best drama.
