International Day of Peace
Each year the International Day of Peace is celebrated around the world on 21 September. The UN General Assembly has declared this as a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, through observing 24 hours of non-violence and cease-fire.
But achieving true peace entails much more than laying down arms. It requires the building of societies where all members feel that they can flourish. It involves creating a world in which people are treated equally, regardless of their race.

International Day of Peace
- Theme 2022:
"End Racism. Build Peace."
We all have a role to play in fostering peace. And tackling racism is a crucial way to contribute.
Life is better in a world where peace exists and, today, we look to those who have been peacemakers and peacekeepers to learn what we can each do individually to make the world a more peaceful place.
- Education:
Schools and educational institutes must take the lead, arranging lessons for students to discuss how different cultures celebrate peace and to learn about conflict and wars in history so that mistakes are not repeated.
Teach your students key concepts that promote peace such as conflict-resolution, peaceful dialogue, consensus-building, and the choice of non-violence.
Students are invited to organize art exhibitions at school, and develop some activities to promote peace and end racism, among classmates.
On an individual level, people take part in activities like planting trees or setting caged animals free, as every little act helps in spreading the message of peace and love.
Other activities:
- Observe a “Minute of Silence”
- Host a peace feast between schools
- Foster peace through education
