“I am as mysterious to myself as I am mysterious to others,” 

Last Monday the 6th April Google celebrated the 98th anniversary of Leonora Carrington, a surrealist painter, and a novelist.

British surrealist artist Leonora Carrington, contemporary of artists like Paul Eluard, Pablo Picasso, André Breton, Max Ernst, was born in Lancashire in 1917, and died in Mexico City in 2011. 

The painting depicted by the doodle, a crocodile-shaped boat bearing five small crocodiles and being rowed by a larger sixth, titled How Doth the Little Crocodile and based on a similarly titled poem by Lewis Carroll, is emblematic of the iconic artist’s strange and wonderful style.

She began her education as an artist in 1936 at the Amedee Ozenfants' academy in London. In 1937 she meets Max Ernst and decides to live with him. 

In 1938 she participates in the Exposition internationale du surrealisme, Galerie Beaux Arts, Paris.

In 1941 after Max Ernst imprisoned during the World War II, Carrington devastated, led to Spain and subsequently made her way to Lisbon, New York City and finally Mexico City, (1942) where she lived until her death in 2011.

She had lived in Mexico City since the 1940s, becoming one of the country’s most important artists. How she ended up there is a fascinating story, absolutely worthy of Surrealism, complete with art, lust and madness.

I could'nt not miss such an interesting Surrealist artist. Now, let's back to the theme of this post.

March rundown of the best posts + Frozen

Hello again from Porto, where after some Spring beautiful days, the rain is back. The weather outside is so disagreeable ! We are not happy. 

The best idea for a Saturday afternoon? Go to the movies. Captain America by Marvel's comic  or Frozen, Disney's new animation. I decided Frozen.

I was very curious about Frozen. Based on the Hans Christian Andersen story The Snow Queen, which combines a jumble of various heroines and heroes and a late-arriving villain, into a story that’s serviceable rather than inspired. Of course you know Andersen. 

Disney's new animation turns Snow Queen into a funny, touching adventure that could rescue the princess film - with not a prince in sight.

Frozen features two princesses... Oh ! Yes, speaking about princesses, I read an interesting article about the success of Frozen, the top-grossing animated film in box office history.

Did you know why Disney's Frozen is a film that conforms to "rules" established by US cartoonist Alison Bechdel?

The film have at last two female characters (Anna and Elsa) and a scene in which they converse on a subject that does not involve a male character or men in general. Yes, Anna and Elsa who have conversations about a range of topics, among them political matters in the fictional kingdom of Arendelle.

Films in which named female characters have conversations that do not revolve around men are likely to enjoy more box office success than films which do not, according to an influential US website.

Women do matter ! Read on Time magazine, and L'Express, two interesting articles . Oh ! That's nice. Because March is the women's month. 

Education:

I hope you don't miss to introduce Frozen in your lessons to explore the pedagogical insight about girls in the 21st century even we are talking about fairy tales.
