Oh! What a special day! Today, October 1 is International Music Day!

As my usual readers know, I love music, I have a master degree in Music/Piano. I have been a piano teacher for years. It would be impossible not to write about Music Day.

On October 1st, the world celebrates International Music Day. This year, 2015, for the 40th time since it was declared in 1975 by the General Assembly in Lausanne and signed by the IMC President at that time, Yehudi Menuhin.

The International Music Council (IMC), founded in 1949 by UNESCO, is the world's largest network of organizations and  institutions working in the field of music. 

Art is a language that all people speak and that cuts across cultural, social, and economic barriers and enhances cultural appreciation and awareness.

Art provides opportunities for self-expression, bringing the inner world into the outer world of concrete reality. 

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights states that everyone has the right "to enjoy the arts", as they constitute an important vehicle for individuals and communities to develop and express their humanity. 

The vitality of artistic creativity is also necessary for the development of vibrant cultures, for the protection and promotion of cultural diversity across the world and for the smooth functioning of democratic societies.

The Five Music Rights of IMC make important declarations about artistic rights and values in respect of music. In particular, the first three Rights articulate much of what is expressed above:

• 1st IMC Music Right: 'For all children and adults to express themselves musically in all freedom'

• 2nd IMC Music Right: 'For all children and adults to learn musical languages and skills'

• 3rdIMC Music Right: 'For all children and adults to have access to musical involvement through participation, listening, creation and information'

I will be focused on these three IMC Music Rights as a teacher who believes and pledge for the integration of Music at all schools. 

Along the years I wrote often about Music as a fundamental subject at school. Music, a practical and active subject, must be taught as part of the curriculum in all year groups.

Many studies have emerged in recent years describing the cognitive, emotional, and behavioral benefits of music education for children. But given the tight budgets and questionable priorities of so many schools, a lot of kids don't begin formal music training until they enter high school and (only 2 years) or decide to join a band or chorus.

Children and young adults from all backgrounds should have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument, to make music with others, to learn to sing or to dance,  to have the opportunity to progress to the next level of excellence.

The aim is not to form not only professional musicians, but to develop the appreciation, taste and critical judgment of the listener from his earliest youth, so as to train him and enable him to appreciate the beauty and wealth of music.

As a good pedagogical example Orquestra Geração offers children from underprivileged suburbs of Portugal (Lisbon and other cities), the opportunity to practice music.

Instruments and music courses are available to them free of charge. It's a musical project for inclusion of the young Portuguese who live innderprivileged suburbs.

No matter the holistic immersive approach of Music :

classical, electronic, pop, rock, hip hop; jazz 

And the engagement of important and experienced musicians is central to achieving significant transformation, particularly to the lives of the most vulnerable children.

International Music Day : let's play music !

Today, October 1st is International Music day.  The IMD was initiated in 1975 by Lord Yehudi Menuhin to encourage:

• the promotion of our musical art among all sections of society
• the application of the UNESCO ideals of peace and friendship between peoples, of the evolution of their cultures, of the exchange of experience and of the mutual appreciation of their aesthetic values
• the promotion of the activities of IMC, its international member organizations and national committees, as well as its programme policy in general.

The IMC was founded in 1949 at the request of UNESCO as a non-governmental advisory body on musical matters. It currently comprises national music committees in 74 countries on all continents as well as 34 organizations representing most fields of musical activity.

Remember my  publication about the young pianist Jan Lisiecki. He is 16 years old, "recognized around the world for his poetic and mature playing", he is already recording for Deutsche Grammophon and he is performing with the best orchestras in famous theaters in different countries.

When we are lucky to study Music and Humanities, for example (this is my case), we understand so well the importance of music in our education, in our life, even if we are teaching Languages & IT. 

As I, many teachers studied Music or just love music. Some of us feel comfortable to speak about Music in different curricula. So, let's do it!

You must try to talk about Music in the classroom, no matter the curriculum you are teaching. Let your students listen some Music as part of the curriculum.

You will feel the enthusiasm of your young students. No matter the kind of Music. Pop or classical. It will depend from the students you are teaching.

So, today is the big day! All the schools, but especially Music schools for all over the world are celebrating this important day.

Different events, creative projects, school concerts, talks, going to a concert with students. All is possible. 

I will share with you an unexpected project. Casa da Musica (Portugal) and Music schools are participating in a different event: 

Young musicians from different Music schools are playing in unexpected places: streets, caffés, libraries, underground  stations, molls, gardens, and so.

Some thoughts:

It is important that music education of high quality is available to as many of them as possible: it must not become the preserve of those children whose families can afford to pay for music tuition. While music touches the lives of all young people, the disadvantaged can benefit most."

Great music education is a partnership between classroom teachers, specialist teachers, professional performers and a host of other organizations, including those from the arts, charity and voluntary sectors.

All of the programs must be customized to meet specific classroom and curricular requirements, but also enrich students experience.
