Education : World Science Day for Peace and Development 2015

"Science stands at its heart as a force for positive transformation and a development multiplier."
Message from Irina Bokova, Director-General of UNESCO

World Science Day for Peace and Development, celebrated each year on 10 November, offers an opportunity to demonstrate how science is relevant to our daily lives and to engage the scientific community, policy makers and the public.

Proclaimed by the UNESCO General Conference  in 2001, the World Science Day for Peace and Development is an annual event celebrated all over the world to recall the commitment made at the UNESCO-ICSU World Conference on Science (Budapest 1999).

2015 Theme: "Science for a Sustainable Future: celebrating the Unesco Science Report."

Science will be essential to reach many of the goals of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and, thus, to ensure a sustainable future. The UNESCO Science Report is one of the tools that countries can use to monitor progress towards the goals of Agenda 2030.

Every five years, it analyses emerging trends in science, technology and innovation policy and governance. The latest edition is launched today on the World Science Day for Peace and Development, 10 November 2015. The key message of the Report can be summarized in just four words: more research - better development.

"50% of the world population depends on groundwater every day, but dangerously little is known about this most precious hidden resource. We urgently call for more scientific research. Better knowledge can help prevent conflicts over water access & help us cope with more frequent droughts, resulting from climate change. The "S" in UNESCO means Science for Peace."

The World Science Day for Peace and Development also aims at raising public awareness of the importance of science and to bridge the gap between science and societies.

The purpose of the World Science Day for Peace and Development is to renew the national, as well as the international commitment to science for peace and development and to stress the responsible use of science for the benefit of society. The World Science Day for Peace and Development also aims at raising public awareness of the importance of science and to bridge the gap between science and societies.

Education:

Activities:

UNESCO invites schools, teachers and students among the different organizations to celebrate the WSDPD with some special events or action.

We know! We can't celebrate such a great theme only
on one day. We must have a week or two to include the WSDPD into the different curriculum, alerting our students to the importance of science for the benefit of all.

After all, the day is symbolic. Of course, students need several lessons to develop activities and organize events.

Science education

The success of the WSDPD will depend on the active involvement of many partners. Schools, teachers and students engaged in different activities that will be undertaken to mobilize support for the objectives of the World Science Day for Peace and Development 2015.

Here some activities and resources that can mobilize support for the objectives of the World Science Day for Peace and Development 2015:

  • Organize classroom discussions to emphasize the many different ways science and technology touch our daily lives. It would be simple, students love technology;
  • Diffuse the WSDPD in your school by engaging the students;
  • Organize an 'Open Day' in your school to highlight the importance of science for peace and development;
  • Ask students to write texts (narrative or poetry), articles, flyers about the importance of science for sustainable societies to publish on the school website, school newspapers, class blog;
  • Distribute the WSDPD's flyers, calendar to schools (based on material downloaded from websites);
  • Incorporate some interesting messages of WSDPD on school Twitter account;
  • Visit local planetarium, College laboratories, deliver scientific presentations or demonstrations to young students;
  • Build classroom-to-classroom connections between schools via the Internet to talk about science projects that will interest young people;
  • Find a sister school and carry out a joint activity highlighting the importance of science;
  • Invite the students of university faculty to join school to celebrate the Day.
  • Arrange a science museum visit. Students love to visit museums, exhibitions.
UNESCO would like to be informed on how teachers and schools are celebrating this event.

Register your event and become a partner of the World Science Day for Peace and Development (WSDPD) in your school.
