Day of Girls and the International Day of the Girl is celebrated on 11 October. The first International Day of the Girl Child was observed in 2012. The year 2024 marks the 12th anniversary celebration of IDG.

Today’s generation of girls is disproportionately affected by global crises of climate, conflict, poverty and pushback on hard won gains for human rights and gender equality. Too many girls are still denied their rights, restricting their choices and limiting their futures.

Yet, recent analysis shows that girls are not only courageous in the face of crisis, but hopeful for the future. Every day, they are taking action to realize a vision of a world in which all girls are protected, respected and empowered.

But girls cannot realize this vision alone. They need allies who listen to and respond to their needs.

"Girls' vision for the future."

This year’s theme, “Girls’ vision for the future,” seeks to empower girls, amplify their voices and support their agency to shape strategies and policies that ensure a better future for us all. Despite progress, 122 million girls remain out of school.

Many girls and women cannot exercise their right to education due to gender inequality and discriminatory practices. Poverty, early marriage, and gender-based violence are just some of the reasons behind the high percentage of out-of-school and illiterate girls and women globally.

International Youth Day is celebrated annually on 12 August to bring youth issues to the attention of the international community and to celebrate the potential of youth as active partners in the global society.

• Theme 2022:

"Intergenerational Solidarity: Creating a World for All Ages."

The objective of International Youth Day 2022 is to amplify the message that action is needed across all generations to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and leave no one behind. 

It will also raise awareness on certain barriers to intergenerational solidarity, notably ageism, which impacts young and old persons, while having detrimental effects on society as a whole.

Solidarity across generations is key for sustainable development. As we navigate the third year of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is especially important to recognize and address these age-related barriers to "build back better" in a manner that leverages all generations’ strengths and knowledge.

Did you know?

• Half of the people on our planet are 30 or younger, and this is expected to reach 57% by the end of 2030.
• Survey shows that 67% of people believe in a better future, with 15 to 17 year-olds being the most optimistic about this.
• The majority of people agree that the age balance in politics is wrong. More than two thirds (69%) of people across all age groups agree that more opportunities for younger people to have a say in policy development/change would make political systems better.
• Globally, only 2.6% of parliamentarians are under 30 years old, and less than 1% of these young MPs are women.

Youth all over the world, be part of the celebrations Creating a World for All Generations by organizing your own event or activity! You can organize an event to celebrate International Youth Day in your community, school, youth club, or workplace.

Are your school or youth group celebrating #YouthDay? Planning a special activity?

Think about what you can do in you community and how you can effectively spread the message. Make it fun and relatable and use all your channels to spread the message. Think Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, university newsletters, local newspapers or radio stations.

• Theme 2021:

The theme, “Transforming Food Systems: Youth Innovation for Human and Planetary Health”, aims to highlight that the success of such a global effort will not be achieved without the meaningful participation of young people.

"This year’s International Youth Day highlights solutions developed by young innovators to address challenges to our food systems. They are tackling inequities in food security, biodiversity loss, threats to our environment and much more."

During the 2021 ECOSOC Youth Forum (EYF), the issues and priorities highlighted by young participants included the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly related to its effect on human health, the environment, and food systems. 

As part of the official outcome recommendations of the EYF, young participants stressed the importance of working towards more equitable food systems.

There is also the risk of zoonotic diseases that can result from unsustainable farming practices and the climate crisis. Population health is also key in addressing food systems challenges, especially as nutrition-related chronic diseases such as obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and some forms of cancer are major contributors to the global burden of disease.

Youth engagement is essential to the transformation of education into a means for inclusive youth development and sustainable development more broadly.

Through youth education, engagement, innovation and entrepreneurial solutions, this year’s International Youth Day aims to provide a platform for young people to continue the momentum from the EYF in the lead up to the high-level Food Systems Summit. 

This year, International Youth Day will be virtually convened by DESA in partnership with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and the Major Group for Children and Youth.

And World Cup 2018 is finally ended today. France is the champion team. However Croacia was the favorite team. Little country.

Most of all, great team that fought until the end with courage and bravery. Croacia can be proud!

Congratulations to both teams! However must not forget all the teams that fought for their dreams. 

Values:

Football has been around since 500 B.C. when Spartans played it as an ancient game. Across centuries, football has evolved as the culture around it has thrived.

Promoting the power of sport values is an important skill we must spread. Fair-play, equality, respect, dignity. Football & sport are a powerful vehicle for social inclusion, gender equality & youth empowerment. And the values of sports are those vital for peace.
