Violence against women and girls remains one of the most prevalent and pervasive human rights violations in the world. Globally, an estimated 736 million women - almost one in three - have been subjected to physical and/or sexual intimate partner violence, non-partner sexual violence, or both, at least once in their life.

This scourge has intensified in different settings, including the workplace and online spaces, and has been exacerbated by post-pandemic effects, conflicts, and climate change.

Education: 

How much does the world care about ending violence against women and girls? We don’t know.

What we do know, is that the human cost of violence against women and girls is incalculable.

The adverse psychological, sexual and reproductive health consequences of VAWG affect women at all stages of their life. For example, early-set educational disadvantages not only represent the primary obstacle to universal schooling and the right to education for girls; down the line they are also to blame for restricting access to higher education and even translate into limited opportunities for women in the labour market.

While gender-based violence can happen to anyone, anywhere, some women and girls are particularly vulnerable - for instance, young girls and older women, migrants and refugees, indigenous women and ethnic minorities, or women and girls living with HIV and disabilities, and those living through humanitarian crises.

Are you ready for a fall meteor shower? On November 18th, join us as we witness the magic of the Leonid Meteor Shower at its peak. See a breathtaking display of shooting stars lighting up the night sky. You might also try watching on the morning of November 17. These ultrafast meteors are due to reach their peak on Saturday morning, November 18. 

In the modern age, Leo is the home in the sky of a wealth of objects of great scientific interest meaning skywatchers and astronomers today are as fascinated with the lion as were antiquity's astrologers and myth-weavers. 

The Leonids, which peak during mid-November each year, are considered to be a major shower though meteor rates are often as low as about 15 meteors per hour. The Leonids are bright meteors and can also be colorful. They are also fast: Leonids travel at speeds of 44 miles (71 kilometers) per second, and they are considered to be some of the fastest meteors.

The Leonids are named after the area of sky from which they seem to originate - the sickle-shaped constellation of Leo (the Lion). 

The constellation of Leo is one of the easiest to spot over Earth inspiring both mythology and cutting-edge astronomy.

Leo is part of the twelve constellations that comprise the zodiac with the others being Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Virgo, Libra, Scorpius, Sagittarius, Capricornus, Aquarius, and Pisces. It follows the naming convention of these groupings taking its name from an animal. 

Every year the Earth passes through these debris trails, which allows the bits to collide with our atmosphere where they disintegrate to create fiery and colorful streaks in the sky. 

A meteor storm versus a shower is defined as having at least 1,000 meteors per hour. Viewers in 1966 experienced a spectacular Leonid storm: thousands of meteors per minute fell through Earth's atmosphere during a 15-minute period. 

There were so many meteors seen that they appeared to fall like rain. The last Leonid meteor storm took place in 2002.

The Leonids are renowned for producing bright fireballs, which outshine every star and planet. Their long trails are often tinged with blue and green, while their vapour trains may linger in the sky for five minutes or more. 

Although the incoming particles are small, ranging from specks of dust to the size of small pebbles, the Leonids glow brightly because they are the fastest of all the meteors. 

A typical Leonid meteor, arriving at a speed of 71 km s-1, will start to glow at an altitude of about 155 km and leave a long trail before it is extinguished.

Education:

Learn the fascinating science behind this phenomenon, as these meteoroids originate from Comet Tempel Tuttle, a celestial traveler on a 33-year orbit around the Sun.

Expect 10-15 meteors per hour at peak during this year’s shower. Grab your telescope, find a spot away from city lights, and immerse yourself in the wonders of the cosmos

• When to watch: Watch late on the night of November 17 until dawn on November 18. The morning of November 17 might be worthwhile, too.

In 2023, first quarter moon falls on November 20. So there will very little interference from moonlight in 2023.

The Leonids are best viewed starting at about midnight local time. Find an area well away from the city or street lights. 

Come prepared for winter temperatures with a sleeping bag, blanket, or lawn chair. Orient yourself with your feet toward the east, lie flat on your back, and look up, taking in as much of the sky as possible. In less than 30 minutes in the dark, your eyes will adapt and you will begin to see meteors. 

Be patient – the show will last until dawn, so you have plenty of time to catch a glimpse.

Em Novembro de 2010, o espólio de Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen chegou à Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal, doado pelos cinco filhos da poeta. 

"A sua criação foi o ponto culminante de um trabalho de três anos sobre o conteúdo deste Espólio, realizado por uma equipa constituída por Maria Luísa Sarsfield Cabral, Manuela Vasconcelos, arquivista da Biblioteca, e por mim própria como coordenadora. Coube-nos ler e identificar cada documento que o constitui e proceder à sua pré-classificação."

Uma nobre atitude da família de Sophia, já que a obra completa de uma das maiores poetas portuguesas é disponiblizada e aberta a novas leituras e perspectivas de estudo a investigadores e estudantes portugueses e estrangeiros.

Há também outras surpreendentes descobertas. Segundo a informação da BN, "no fundo de um  pequeno móvel, meio abandonado estavam, escondidos e alinhados, vários cadernos, os mais antigos cadernos de poemas. Dentro da ideia de que os desperdícios contam histórias, pode-se dizer que esta é uma das partes mais interessantes do espólio."

• Curtos dados biográficos:

Sophia nasceu no Porto, no dia, 6 Novembro 1919. Foi no Porto que passou a infância. Estudou Filologia Clássica na Universidade de Lisboa. Publicou os primeiros versos em 1940, nos Caderno de Poesia. Morreu em Lisboa a 2 Julho 2004.

A 6 de Novembro 2019 cumpriram-se 100 anos do nascimento de Sophia, uma das mais importantes poetas portuguesas do século XX, e a primeira mulher a receber o Prémio Camões em 1999, o mais relevante galardão literário da língua portuguesa.

Foi também galardoada com o Grande Prémio de Poesia pela Sociedade Portuguesa de Escritores, com um Doutoramento Honoris Causa em 1998 pela Universidade de Aveiro e com o Prémio Rainha Sofia, em 2003.

A sua obra apresenta uma forte ligação ao mar e aos seus mistérios, à natureza, à vida e à morte. Escreveu de uma forma muito portuguesa, muito tocante, como se cada linha tivesse um pouco de saudade.

Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen tinha um amor inexplicável pelo mar e o dom da palavra, decerto antes de sequer esboçar a primeira.

• Sophia de Mello Breyner 100 anos:

É o vasto Espólio de palavras, poemas e textos que estão a ser celebrados ao longo de 2019 com eventos que se prolongarão até ao fim de 2019.

Escreveu também contos, artigos, ensaios e teatro. Escreveu vários livros de literatura juvenil. Distinguiu-se verdadeiramente foi como contista e autora de livros de literatura infantil e juvenil.

Traduziu Eurípedes, Shakespeare, Claudel, Dante e, para o francês, alguns poetas portugueses.

O Jardim Botânico, no Porto, casa da avó de Sophia, apresentou uma pequena Exposição sobre Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen denominada Pour ma Sophie.

Para além de contar com mais de 300 livros, “Pour ma Sofie” reuniu dedicatórias, postais e rasurados que celebraram o Centenário de Sophia, que gostava de ser tratada como poeta por considerar a designação feminina inferior, E com grande mérito, é a poeta!
